Hello!

My name is Rory, from Australia, and I am currently travelling through Latin America for a few months and looking for some enriching and positive volunteer experiences. My belief is that the core purpose of travel is to gain a deeper understanding of other cultures and ways of being, with the aim of mutual enrichment between people. I have a passion for learning, the natural world, and storytelling.

Back in Australia, I studied an undergraduate degree in literature/politics, and a Master of Environment degree specialising in development and climate change. Through my studies, I became particular interested in how global agriculture is adapting to climate change to improve food security. I believe I have much to learn about the lived realities of farmers and communities across the world, and I wish to gain this experience through travel. In my work, I coordinated community food security programs at a community centre in Melbourne.

I consider myself an introspective and social person, yet I require and enjoy time to myself. I am creative and like to learn various skills, such as playing the guitar, or learning a language. I've taught myself Spanish to a level where I can communicate and connect with local peoples in my travels. To entertain myself, I spend plenty of time reading, or researching various topics.

My core ideals relate to strengthening the bonds of communities across the world, learning about and trying to embody a de-growth and reduced consumption mindset, stewardship of our natural world, economic and social equality, and above all, empathy and curiosity.

I hope to find an experience where I can hopefully offer support, and gain a new story along the way...

I have been learning Spanish for a couple of years, though I have much to improve. In my travels so far I have managed conversations with a variety of different people, though I require a patient speaker as at times I find it difficult to understand very rapid speech. My ability to speak is improving every day with practice! In regards to English, I am happy to offer support, advice, teaching and practice with anyone learning.
