Hi! My name is Emily and I am a 24yo teacher in Philadelphia. I studied French for 7 years and am anxious to achieve fluency through immersion. I am also developing a passion for wine and would love to help out on a vineyard and learn more about viticulture.

I am a well-travelled individual, having explored Mexico, Kenya, Tanzania, Ireland, France, Cuba, and a couple more countries either on my own or as part of a group. I love an exciting adventure and am always looking to meet new people and learn about the world through their eyes.

Quais são suas habilidades?
I graduated with a Bachelor's in International Affairs with a focus in Conflict Resolution. I love discussing history and politics and environmental and educational around the world and learning about people's passions. I also studied French through college but am not confident in speaking. I want to become fluent, using immersion to get there.

I am very good at following instructions and I learn very fast. I became a teacher on an emergency certification which means I picked up 25 children on the first day of school without having taught a day in my life. On top of that, I was also enrolled full time in courses to earn my certification within my first year. I have dedicated myself in the past couple years to developing my teaching practices and have received praise and high marks from my direct advising assistant principal. Suffice to say, I can work hard and learn fast. I also love working with children!

I also am an amateur gardener, often growing some herbs and sunflowers outside and trying to care for my variety of indoor plants. I recently successfully propagated my first plant!

I am an animal lover and have 2 dogs and 3 cats at home. I love to take care of animals and play with them. I love listening to music and developing skills that help with taking care of the home or garden. I can't wait to workaway!

I travelled to Palín in February 2026 just for a one month escape from the cold northeast US and chance to teach, learn about a new country, and practice some Spanish. I was nervous before going, but would 100% recommend this experience to anyone whom it sounds interesting to.

I have a few years of teaching experience in the US, and this… read more environment was comparatively a dream. All of the staff were friendly, caring, and helpful. Raúl runs a fantastic English academy where students of all ages come to improve their chances of employment and travel opportunities in the future. Teaching is out of a book, but you can really create engaging activities based on some of the book prompts to keep the class fun and interesting. For example, there was a discussion prompt about describing a wedding ceremony in Guatemala, and I had the students work in small groups to write a paragraph and then share in front of the class. When we were learning grammar or tenses, I would create class competitions of two teams, say the phrase/word in Spanish and then see which team could write the answer fastest for a point. Just fun opportunities for speaking, friendly competition, discussing with classmates a topic in English, etc. created a vibrant classroom environment. For the most part you are either teaching a class, assisting another teacher in a class, or doing 1-1 conversations with learners of all levels. Sometimes I had no idea what I'd be doing when I walked into the academy in the morning, but I never felt unprepared.

In terms of my language ability, I had only studied Spanish on YouTube for 4 months prior to this trip. I was able to practice some conversations with the staff but for the most part the staff and the students also wanted to practice their English so my limited capabilities weren't a problem. I would say it's very helpful to know some basic phrases if you plan on traveling around a little bit. Lake Atitlan, Antigua, and the Acetenango and Fuego hikes are all very accessible by private shuttle or chicken bus. Raúl will help you figure out how to get to your destination and give you advice.

Honestly, it's 1 week after leaving and I am missing this experience so much. I would 100% go back one day if it fits into my schedule. I would also recommend staying for 2 months if you're able to. The work is rewarding, fun, and not super time-consuming. The accommodation is lovely, shared with another volunteer, safe, equipped with a pool, gym, shops, etc. in a gated community. Raúl also went grocery shopping for us almost weekly based on what we needed.
