Hi! I’m 19 years old and from Austria. Right now I’m taking two gap years — the first one working full-time and the second one dedicated to travelling, meeting new people, and experiencing different ways of life around the world.
I would describe myself as outgoing, friendly, calm, and positive, but also full of energy and always motivated to try new things. My friends often call me a “ray of sunshine” because I’m open-minded, easy to get along with, and excited about life and new experiences. I’m also a very tidy and clean person and enjoy helping wherever I can.
I’m a sporty and active person. I go to the gym regularly and used to do gymnastics, which taught me discipline, stamina, and strength. I love being outdoors, going on walks, swimming, and spending time in nature. Besides sports, I’m passionate about music, languages, photography, psychology, and architecture (which I might study in the future). I also love cooking with other people and learning new recipes from different cultures.
One of the main reasons I want to do Workaway is to truly experience how people live in different countries, learn from them, and grow as a person through these experiences. I enjoy meeting people from different backgrounds and learning about their culture, lifestyle, and perspective on life.
Japan especially fascinates me. I’ve always been interested in the culture and started learning Japanese because I would love to understand the country and people on a deeper level. Improving my language skills while being immersed in the culture would be an amazing experience for me.
Even though I haven’t volunteered before, I’ve travelled a lot around Europe and Asia, which made me very adaptable and open-minded. I’m always happy to help, whether it’s cleaning, social media, spending time with kids, or simply bringing positive energy into a home.
I’m open to new experiences, love learning life skills, and believe that the best memories come from stepping outside your comfort zone and connecting with people from around the world

During my gap year I’ve been working in several different jobs, which helped me become adaptable, responsible, and confident in new environments. Currently I work in mail/package delivery, where being physically fit, efficient, and organized is very important. I enjoy working outdoors and staying active throughout the day.
I also work in a restaurant/bar/café as well as in the VIP security section for events. Through these jobs I learned how to work under pressure, communicate with many different kinds of people, stay professional, and work well in a team. Before that I also worked in retail alongside school, which improved my customer service skills and responsibility from a young age.
I speak german and english fluently, some french and conversational spanish. I’m also currently learning Japanese because of my interest in the culture and language. I really enjoy languages and connecting with people from different backgrounds. I’m very open to learning new skills and taking on new challenges. I adapt quickly and enjoy stepping outside my comfort zone to gain new experiences. Once I understand how something works, I’m able to learn fast and work independently. Being physically fit, motivated, and hands-on, I’m happy to help with a wide variety of tasks — from cleaning and organizing to cooking, social media, and practical day-to-day work. I love photography and naturally notice beauty in everyday moments, places, people, and nature. I enjoy taking pictures and creating memories through them.
People usually describe me as organized, easy-going, motivated, and a good listener. I adapt quickly to new situations and enjoy both working independently and being part of a team. Most importantly, I always try to bring positive energy and enthusiasm wherever I go.

There were definitely things I appreciated about having Eliane stay with me. There were times when she showed initiative. For example, when I was in a hurry to leave to rescue a dog on a big cleaning day, she offered to take care of the cleaning for me, which I really appreciated. She also ate pretty much anything without being picky, which made … read more planning meals very easy for me and was honestly a big help.

However, I sometimes felt that she saw many of the daily tasks as things she was “doing for me” or doing me a favor, rather than as her own responsibilities or part of our shared daily life. This became more noticeable after a Taiwanese volunteer came to stay with me right after Eliane, and also when one of my Japanese friends came to visit.

It was more that Eliane sometimes seemed to assume that certain things were naturally my responsibility. For example, with the dogs' morning routine, the Taiwanese volunteer I am hosting now was shown the routine once and then started preparing the dogs and putting on their leashes by herself without waking me up. With Eliane, she would come and wake me up when she got up, and I would end up preparing everything for the dogs while she spent around 30 minutes getting herself ready.

I felt something similar with meals and other everyday things around the house. To be fair, during her stay there were about three days when Eliane asked what time I would be cooking and joined me in the kitchen because she was interested in learning how to cook some of the dishes. Outside of those occasions, however, her own plans and going out generally seemed to take priority. She didn't usually join in with cooking, and on one occasion, when it suddenly started raining, she saw me rushing to bring the laundry in but instead of helping, she rushed into the shower to start getting ready to go out — even though her appointment wasn't for another four hours.

The same applied to caring for the dogs. As far as I remember, Eliane changed the dogs' toilet sheets only once, after I specifically asked her to. Otherwise, even if there was dog poop right next to her bed, she would leave it there without cleaning it up. In contrast, the Taiwanese volunteer I am hosting now started taking care of things like this on her own, without me ever having to ask.

There was also one occasion when my Japanese friend came over just to visit. She had bought Wagyu beef for Eliane to try and then helped me cook, serve the food, and wash the dishes. Meanwhile, Eliane stayed upstairs while we were preparing the meal and came downstairs when the food was ready. That moment really made me feel the cultural difference between Asia and Europe.

If a volunteer chooses to cook and eat by themselves, I don't expect them to help with my cooking at all. But if we are eating together, I would have appreciated more participation in cooking, setting the table, or cleaning up together with me. I also regularly helped Eliane with tasks that were technically part of her responsibilities, such as cleaning or washing the dogs, simply because we were living and working together. I would have appreciated the same sense of shared responsibility in the other direction.

My biggest concern was the handling of the dogs. Matsuri already had an injured front leg from an accident involving a previous volunteer and needed to be handled carefully. Unfortunately, Eliane dropped her twice — once near the stairs and once from the table while drying her after a bath. Even a month later, Matsuri is still limping on that leg. I know it wasn't intentional, but I felt she needed to be much more careful when handling a small and already injured dog.

As a person, though, Eliane is genuinely kind and lovely. If I were reviewing her simply as a friend, I would give her 100 out of 100.
To be honest, if the Taiwanese volunteer who is staying with me now hadn't come immediately after Eliane, and I had hosted someone less proactive instead, I probably would have rated Eliane much more positively as a Workawayer.
At the same time, among the European volunteers I have personally hosted, I would still consider Eliane one of the better ones.

So my criticism is really about her approach to the work and shared responsibilities, not about her character. I genuinely enjoyed having her around as a person and wish her all the best.
