Hi, we’re Amelia (24) & Max (27)!

We’re a couple from the UK currently travelling South East Asia and looking for meaningful volunteer opportunities in and around Da Nang. We’ll be there from the end of May and plan to stay on afterwards to teach English for one year.

We first met while volunteering in Tanzania with VSO and since then have travelled to 18 countries together, often combining our love for adventure with our passion for volunteering. We both have degrees in psychology (Amelia’s is specifically educational psychology) and TEFL qualifications, and we’ve worked in UK primary schools as classroom and 1:1 assistants.

One of our most rewarding experiences was living in Peru for six months where we both volunteered for NGOs. Max taught English online and also worked with a local women’s empowerment initiative, while Amelia taught English in an after-school programme and took on a role as a fundraising and education coordinator. These roles really shaped our love for working within communities at grassroots level and motivated us go to want to teach English in Vietnam.

Outside of teaching, we’re not afraid of hands-on work. Amelia grew up on a farm and loves animals, and with her experience living off grid on Great Barrier Island in New Zealand, she is very comfortable outdoors and is not afraid to get her hands dirty. Max also loves being in nature and has spent time living in rural Norway on a salmon farm, sheering sheep and working on construction. He also has experience delivering tours during his time in Lapland,Finland where he worked with children and their families to deliver magical Christmas experiences.

In our free time, Amelia loves art, dance, and yoga, and Max is a big fan of ultimate frisbee, which he’s coached and played for years. We love hiking, exploring local markets, and trying all the food we can find. Max also enjoys cooking partly due to being half Brazilian but also because he briefly worked in Ottolenghi’s kitchen in London! So, we are always happy to cook and share meals with others.

We’re super open-minded, easy-going, and love getting stuck into new experiences. We’re really excited to find a project where we can learn, contribute, and connect with others.

Quais são suas habilidades?

Amelia has always wanted to work with children and has dedicated a great deal of time to gaining experience in this field. Amelia has over 10 years of experience in schools across the UK and internationally. Through teaching dance and art to primary aged children, both in schools and privately, she’s developed strong creative planning skills, confident classroom management, and an engaging, hands-on teaching style.

Her time supporting SEND children, combined with her phonics training and academic background, has made her particularly skilled in inclusive education and early language development.

Amelia’s pedagogical research deepened her passion for educational inequalities and language barriers, making her especially motivated to support projects that empower young people through education and language learning.

Max also has a strong interest and talent for languages due to his family background and international experiences. He is fluent in Portuguese and can speak intermediate Spanish. Max also picks up new languages and pronunciation remarkably quickly, often learning the basics within days. During his travels, he picked up conversational phrases in Swahili, Norwegian, and German after a short time in each country, demonstrating his natural ear and communication skills. He is also currently learning Vietnamese and Italian.

Since graduating Max has sought opportunities in a variety of settings and countries. Consequently, Max has experience and knowledge in an array of sectors from psychology, education, charity work, tourism, sport coaching, cooking and even real estate! Max’s versatility is undeniably his strength making him incredibly adaptable, a quick learner and a great communicator.

We’re both huge foodies and most of our conversations seem to revolve around food! While we’ve enjoyed the occasional fine dining experience, we’re most at home exploring street food stalls and local markets. Travelling has made us incredibly adventurous eaters; we’re always up for trying something new and especially anything spicy. So far, our most memorable tastings include guinea pig, grubs, spiders, and, most recently, rat!

We’re also both lovers of adventure. From hiking to bungee jumping, we’re always up for a challenge and love getting stuck into new experiences. Over the next year, we’re hoping to learn to surf while living in Da Nang. Max is keen to join a local frisbee team, and Amelia has her sights set on becoming a certified Pilates instructor.
