  • Descrição

Hello everyone!! My name is Yuyumi; I’m a 19-year-old student from Japan. Currently, I’m studying Social Science in China, and my future dream is to contribute to international development.

Due to Covid-19, my University has been offering online classes, allowing me to travel in the daytime and complete my course at night. Thanks to this unique system, I can spend almost half a year stepping out of my comfort zone: Japan and exploring the opposite side of the world: South America.

I’ve been travelling to South America since the end of February 2023. I’ve stayed in a little village in Ecuador for two months, helping with local tourism. And now, I’m teaching an English class in Peru. Actually, I didn’t speak a word of Spanish when I first arrived in Ecuador. As a solo traveller, the language barrier is definitely one of the biggest challenges I encountered so far. However, what I’ve realized is that communication is baseless on language but not limited to language. Even though my Spanish is more than broken, I made a lot of local friends and connected with people from over the world. In order to get to know more about the people and the culture, I’m working very hard on my Spanish, and I’m looking forward to improving my Spanish through language exchange!

    More info about me:
I was born and raised in Japan. When I was six years old, I lived in China for two years, and that’s why I’m fluent in Chinese and very interested in Chinese culture. If I can choose one word to describe my childhood, there are no other options but “studying”. The concept of the education I’ve received is that you must study very, very hard so that you can go to a good school, get a good job, and your life will be just excellent. Therefore, my daily routine used to be cramming all the knowledge from the textbook into my head from sunrise to sundown as the other students were doing. I won’t deny that my efforts did pay me with some academic achievements, but the lifestyle of doing something just to answer the social expectation sometimes makde me feel so hard to breathe. I want to live a life filled with freedom and happiness; at least, I don’t need to put myself where others want me to be.
There it comes to travelling. It hasn’t been long since I came to South America, but what I’ve experienced with those beautiful people I met are absolutely life-changing. I can’t wait to see more of this continent at the same time, discover more about myself.
