Hiya, I'm Katie.
I finished my university studies in June and have since walked The Pennine Way (260 miles), after this I started my volunteering journey in the UK for a few months and im now in New Zealans. Various people have asked the purpose of my travels and I think the main reasons are predominantly to explore through meeting new people and communities, experiencing unfamiliar cultures and learning as much as possible along the way especially new skills which I find incredibly valuable. I find myself happiest living in a community style environment of good people whilst completing work tasks in a team or being given little projects to get on with myself which require thinking skills. I am most interested in building things and DIY in general or any physical jobs as I find sitting still for ages not the best :).
I love exploring in my free time especially on foot. I walk a lot and love wild swimming, running and being active in general or spending time reading. Overall I work hard at whatever task I am giving and I enjoy keeping myself busy.
I have spent around 8 months volunteering in total so far and all the various roles are mentioned below in the skills bit. Looking forward to wherever I end up next :)

Quais são suas habilidades?
I have roughly volunteered for 8 months in total at a few places including a community farm, 2 off grid properties and hostels. Some tasks I have been involved in at done both with support and alone are:
- looking after chickens and bees
-changeovers for holidays cottages/ a cabin
-extending a shed lean, building a stud frame and using scrap tin for the roof
-built a dry stone wall
-general diy e.g. painting, mending broken benches, gutter clearing, honey frame making
- lots of cooking and baking for groups of 6-14 people
-fence building
-hugerculture/permaculture gardening methods
-pruning, clearing areas of weeds and brambles, planting veggie seeds
-concrete making, barn foundation laying
-loads of digging, levelling ground and putting gravel down
-earth plastering
-cleaning hostel rooms, changing beds
-staying with female monks (bikkhunis). Chanting,meditation, looking after the garden.
I absolutely love living in a community sharing meals/ common spaces/ good conversation and card games. Really happy to get stuck into different tasks wherever I can help especially related to building things and having to think for myself or get involved with a project. I am happy to be on my feet all day for more active jobs or I love doing DIY/ mending things. I have various basic skills in most things but am quite a visual learner so keen to try new things when shown how.
Some past experiences include a few years ago I also did a National Trust working holiday replacing fences in Sussex and some Wwoofing where I stayed for three weeks on an essential oils farm, helping with weeding and picking the flowers in preparation for the oil making process.
I also work with kids 4-10 years old at a school holiday club and have done so for a good few years. I have also volunteering at festivals, an animal sanctuary and Parkruns which have built up a varied range of skills enabling me to adapt quite well to different scenarios.
I worked as a student ambassador during term time helping at careers fair, interviews, open days and jobs that need doing in some of the departments and had a temp agency job doing things like pot washing, clearing tables and resetting them and bar back.

Love exploring new places/ meeting new people especially for walks, card games, swims, camping and general conversations. Love swimming in lakes/ any form of water, listening to music, reading and journaling. The best thing is packing a bag and cramming 5 people into a 4 man tent then going wild camping and walking for a few days or just any opportunity I get to be out in the sunshine :)
