Hi, I´m Lola (it says Isabell in my passport but I´m called Lola) and like workaway a lot that´s why i make a description of myself although i think it´s a weird thing. So here we go:

For the past 3 years I´ve been living on and off in Berlin (Winters outside of Europe and spring mostly in Barcelona). I try not to work more than 25hrs a week and I love it- it would be amazing if every human would have the opportunity to do that. I moved to Berlin, initially, because of the Clubs. But I stay or come back because of my friends, the city itself and the vibe you got here. I cant imagine a better place to live atm.

But german winter is tough, that´s why I always choose to leave for half a year from November on. Always different destinations: New Zealand, South Africa, Martinique ... I mostly do workaway there and except one time I had pretty good times. Met wonderful people, learned, explored ...

Right now I got two jobs. I work in a Kindergarten, cooking for 25kids vegetarian lunch and the other one is hosting cooking classes in a cooking school with up to 12 participants. It´s a vegan cooking class and I quite enjoy how diversified it is. I treasure diversity in my everyday life as well. That´s why I also engage in different charity. They mostly focus on sutainability like avoiding food waste or advocating for fewer usage of water.
I´m creative and love to do different things with my hands. Yesterday I tried making shampoo bars haha.

What else is there to say? I´m a summer child, i love to wear dresses, i am a dogs person but some cats are cool too, i love berlin clubs where u can escape for up to three days, I love cycling, I enjoy hosting dinners and have friends around, i am vegetarian, electronic music makes me smile while dancing, karma is real, i always wear sunscreen, i only can tell one joke by heart, my toe nails are always painted, if i feel bad or am mad at someone i dont talk, my hair is blonde and curly and i got asked a lot if it´s a perm, who the fuck invented kissing- must have been a genius, the best way of living is together with people, i love crafting, i enjoy cleaniness, i speak spanish and english fluent which makes life a lot easier while being abroad, for the past 1.5years i´ve been living with two cats and dogs, swimming clears my head, sharing is always caring, i have two tattoos, i dont enjoy loneliness more than 3 days, sparkling wine is a must, i drink a lot of tea but no beer, pizza must never die, coastlines are beautiful af, i sometimes host workshops like massage garage or eye contact, reading is cool, summer rain is a bliss.

A lot of me, myself and I in there, but I live for my friends and the people around me. Not a lot is more important.

There’s a lot of things I learned and way more to still learn!
I had a lot of different part time jobs so far: as a waitress, as a pizza chef, as a post woman, as a person selling gummi bears, promoting news papers, working in a mustard fabric!, working for Audi in the production area, doing internships in climate policy, working in a kindergarten, giving vegan cooking classes, hosting workshops, personal assistance for handicapped people, helping people declutter their household, virtual assistant and as a Certified nutritionist..

I’m open to basically anything. I enjoy doing several different things at a time.

I was two times at this slice of paradise (Dec and April 22/23) and it was an absolutely calming experience. coming from on overrun island this place right by the sea, with just dogs and other humans was just what I needed. I had a really nice time at Angela’s and Sharpie’s. After I postponed my arrival by about 3 weeks I took the ferry and was surprised by how choppy the last hour was. But the dolphins that swam along our boat made totally up for that.
The ferry costs about 120Dollar return if booked together. A flight can be as cheap as 60Dollars is booked in… read more advance a few weeks, but one way.

A&S have the most amazing house overlooking the water and native bushland. It’s incredible. And the sunsets are just stunning. Not to mention the stars! I was there with another volunteer and we each had a room for ourselves and a bathroom we two shared. The living there is super sustainable which I enjoyed a lot. So please have long showers before you come to the island 

The routine was the same everyday (Sat and Sun we were off): nice cooked breakfast, including eggs from the chickens in the garden, bread and cereals if wanted. Then we watered the veggies, planted things, recycled the cardboard, picked up the laundry from the cabin they rented out, extended the chicken coop (so proud of the outcome- unfortunately forgot to put our names somewhere, so please do> Jaz and Izzy) or carry a new water pipe through the native bush down to the spring (totally lost my fear of spiders and spider webs- quick fix, thanks for that). We then had absolutely delicious lunch (I am vegetarian- just make sure to mention that before you come or just after arrival). After doing the dished we were then released and explored the surroundings. We went for walks, hikes, bike rides, kayak trips or for a few beers to the local pub. Locals are nice and stop almost every time for hitchhikers.

There’s a small shop in town, right next to the pub. You get the most important things there. We almost never needed it, cause we usually had the leftovers of lunch or had a slice of bread (that sharpie bakes everyday fresh).
My stay got shortened by the outbreak of corona and the announced lockdown. A and S were really supportive during this time when Jaz and I were on the laptops and phones a lot to change travel plans and visa affairs. In the end we took a flight off the island and needed to leave this slice of paradise.
The island is incredibly beautiful and I’m grateful that some locals and Sharpie showed us around and also went fishing with us. I’d love to come back! Thanks Angie and Sharpie

I was hitching from Christchurch to Queenstown with a friend and asked him if we could make an overnight stop at his place so I could check out his project and come back a month later, since I already had plans before that.
He picked us up in Oamaru and showed us a around- steam punk city! The… read more landscape from O to Kurow is incredibly beautiful!
At his house we made pizza, drank wine and beer and just had so Much fun. So many laughs..
Will be back in a few weeks for workaway, can't wait!

2nd Stay Feedback 20.May 2020:
Ok, I’d like to keep this short but I’m afraid I’ll have difficulties. Maybe because I stayed almost 3 months or because there’s so many things worth telling?

Kurow: a small village with lovely people (about 350), 3 cafes, 1 FourSquare supermarket, 1 gas station, 1 Atm, 2 second hand shops, two fish and chips shops, 1 post office including a small shop with gifts etc, one Info Center and last but most important 2 pubs! Oamaru (sea) is 40mins away, Omarama (direction Queenstown or Tekapo) is also a 40min drive. The town is nestled in the Waitaki Valley with a very special braided river and beautiful surroundings that are perfect for hikes, walks, runs, bike rides, boat rides, swims or drives in general.

Will: an incredibly easy going person you cannot not like! He likes to be around people and always makes sure to help you in any possible way. He’s energetic and hard working, but also super outgoing and spontaneous which lead to many lovely weekends or nights. Will never policed us on hours, it was always pretty free range and he tried to distribute the tasks in a way that everyone does something he or she is good in or enjoys working in. When it came to explaining or teaching things he was always really patient and precise and was happy to show you more times if you didn’t understand it. Pretty quick afterwards he let you be in charge of the situation. He liked introducing us to his friends or family what gave you a feeling of belonging to the community. Will always tried to show us around when we were selling tacos somewhere outside of town. So we often took detours to jump into nice rivers or check out other things. After work we usually had beers and wine,..i loved it.

Taco House: we lived in our own Taco House at the end of a pretty street with view on the mountain range behind us. We had a wee garden and enough space to spend the days outside. We set up a recycling system and a compost after we moved and Will was in general open to in- or outdoor improving ideas. Will provided food and went shopping every other day. Because he was pretty busy with his other job during the day we mostly cooked dinner and shared some drinks and laughs in the evening. Will always encouraged us to enjoy our free time and was generous in lending us his bike or car at times.

Tacomania: we usually sold tacos twice a week in Kurow and one or two days somewhere close to the lakes (25min drive). So the main work consisted of prep work that was done in the community hall a 2min drive from the house. Preparing sauces, meat, veggies, toppings, guacamole etc. I really enjoyed that work, mostly because we took our music and speaker. We then put all the stuff in the Taco Van and brought it to the selling site in town. Setting up everything took less than 10mins with 3-4 people, so super quick. Then Taco madness started and we got our music pumping and explained to Kiwis what tacos are 😀 We always had heaps of fun. Especially when we tried to attract people with our sign spinning skills haha. Will always made sure we had a good time, what I really appreciated.

What I did: because I was there from the very start on I got to do great range of things: painting, accounting, emails, workaway organization, book keeping, ordering new ingredients, cooking etc etc. I loved it and everyday was different. Will gave me the freedom to work independently and trusted me in many ways what I liked a lot. He also always made sure I don’t work too much and enjoy my free time.

With a heavy heart but full of new experiences and memories I carried on after 3 months. Just to come back two weeks later for another 2 months of corona lockdown. This time without selling
tacos.
