Hi, everyone reading my "profile description".

My name is Eivind; many people would describe me as a fairly young boy, with the life ahead of me. "Yung" or "old" are relative measurements, but though I'm in my early twenties, I sometimes feel that my years has rushed away in front of me, and that my life is short. A human's life IS short, compared the massive history of the the human kind - and almost infinetly little sat beside the greatness of the whole existence.
Well, my point is that life, in the light of what a just said, can appear meaningless and of almost no value. And even though 'me signing up at Workaway' won't save the world, it could maybe be an opportunity to do sometning for someone. I don't know what I'm gonna do yet, or for whom - maybe it is you?

I've been thinking abount working abroad on and off for some time. And my life situation right now is nearly perfet; young and unattached and no studies to focus on. And after two friends of mine worked on an children institution in Kenya not long ago, I've really wanted to visit a similar country. They can talk for hours about the totally different way of living together, a more true way of taking care of each other and the fact that the people have time for each other. No, of cours everything in Kenya is not better than in Denmark where I live; Kenya has it's issues, just as every other country. But I think I've lived most of my life thinking that many of the african countries needed our help. They were poor, we where rich. But the thing is, I more and more believe that "we" in the west are spiritually and moraly poorer, compared to many countries with lower material wellness.

Anyway. Besides dreaming of working some months in a local community in an African country, I spend my time working in the local food shop, rope climbing and bouldering in the gym, reading books and seeing people I care about. Though I live in Denmark, I'm actually Norwegian. And the fact that my family moved several times as a kid, and my current address is not in my home country, have given me a rootless view of myself. Who knows - maybe I'll settle in whatever country I find myself working in:)

My hope is to find a place where I can stay for several month, maybe half a year. I believe that gives me an bigger and more real experience than if I switch location every now and than. I like the thought of knowing the cultural norms and the language, and of making local friends. But let's not build too much expectations.

I look foreword to the possibilities that lies ahead.

This spring, I had the honour of spending 4,5 months at the foundation. I absolutely recommend it. I've spent some time to acclimatize to my life back home in Norway, and therefore my late review on this site.

First of all, I want to thank Masika and Desire for allowing me to be part of their household for such a long time. I felt I said goodbye… read more to family members when leaving their home for the last time. We all know the time spent hasn't only been a dance on roses; the work load and responsibilities that you, Masika, carried, was enormous. I have no idea how you made it so far. I myself was also truly tired and overwelmed some days from all the projects and the never ending demand for resources and money. But the tough days could not take away the magic and joy I felt being part of this project. I cannot appreciate you enough for your compassionate work to make the world a better place for these vulnerable people. You've sacrifised a lot, and I will always admire you for that.

Now, comments to future volunteers:

1) I would definetly encourage you to give this a try! I cannot say it will be just easy, but I believe it will be worth it. All the feedbacks have mentioned how heartwarming it has been to get to know the children at school. And it is true. I pray that I one day can make it back and to see how the kids are doing.

2) After reading the work description on workaway, I wasn't sure if I could be of any help; I'm not a teacher, I know nothing about agriculture or construction work, and I'm not used of writing proposals. But I quickly came to realize that you don't need to have any expertice; willingness to help is the only criteria. Without any special knowledge, we've been able to have a lot of fun classes with the kids at school, we've fundraised and constructed a dormitory and a solar water pump, cooperating with the headteacher to make positive changes in the teaching style, implementing several hygiene projects and bringing children to medical help (among other projects) . I NEVER thought I could be part of such things before I went. But people are there to explain how you can be of help. And you'll get to understand the system day by day.

3) Speaking of the headteacher: Nixon is a very compassionate guy, who wants the best for the school and the children. He is very open to new ideas and ways to elevate the school. Don't be afraid to approach him, even though he seem a bit macho with his cool beard. If you want to make a lasting change, make sure you cooperation with Nixon and Masika.

4) Security wise, I always felt safe. You will definately get a whole lot of attention and many people will approach you and ask for your money or phone number. I never got fully used of it, but I understood it was nothing to worry about. This said, Masika's highest priority is your security in Kasese, and she will advice you to stay home after sunset and not to leave anywhere without letting her know. Because shit happens, also in Kasese, especialy during night time.

5) An advice from me: remember to make yourself a schedule (and communicate it to Masika), and to give yourself breaks. I didn't make a schedule, and I was not very good at taking breaks. You're f.ex. not expected to work or stay at school during weekends, but we often did so. And I ended up a bit burnt out in the end. There will be plenty of things to do and projects to dig into - but you cannot do it all.
