Hello! :)
We are Caro and Ferdi, an easy going, hardworking and open-minded couple from Germany.
We both share a great passion for nature! At home we are going hiking, mountain climbing, cycling, etc. as often as we can. We are social beings but also enjoy quiet moments and time for ourselves. :-)
Caro: I´m a biologist/ecologist specialised in vegetation. I work as a freelancer and chose to be self-employed to have the freedom to go travelling in wintertime. I love exploring nature (I can spend a lot of time just looking at plants, birds, insects, etc.) gardening, creating things using my hands, big scale DYS-projects like working in construction and good stories in any shape or form!
Ferdi: I studied business and work in quality management. I`m into electronic music also producing my own tunes. I love doing sports and cooking delicious food among many other things, including gardening and construction as well. While travelling I`m always looking out for good surfspots!
We love learning and developing skills! We and are especially interested in eco-building principles, permaculture gardening and sailing but are always happy to help you with any task needed!
Apart from gaining practical skills which will help us to realize our own projects, we love the idea of workaway so much because it gives us the chance to experience the beautiful diversity of life and different lifestyles as well as to share a home and daily life with interesting people around the world!
Our longterm dream is to build our own place one day with a small house and a big garden close to nature. Before we moved in together, Caro had been living for some years in a wagon village with a community of ten people. There we all shared the same values of a simple and sustainable life-style like e.g. using only solar- and windpower, saving water, using compost-toilet, food-sharing, etc etc. We miss living the off-grid life and hope to go back to this lifestyle one day.
So we hope to find places with warmhearted people, hard work to get our hands dirty, where sharing knowledge and open communication is valued! :)
Some of Caros workaway experience abroad:
Before the pandemic hit, I spent almost four weeks at an off-grid place in Tasmania building an Earthship. I learned e.g. how to build walls with cob, recycled materials and clay render, build a shower out of cement and self-made glass-bricks, build a cement wall, cob benches, door frames, etc. We also helped taking care of the biodynamic garden which had permaculture features.
I was working for a community project on Tenerife for seven weeks in 2018 being head of the gardenteam (I already had experience from working on organic farms in Ireland). We worked in our kitchen garden providing our own veggies and did the first steps in the soon to be permaculture garden e.g. building a hugelkultur. Also we built several bamboo-yurtas!
In 2016, I was working for three months with sleddogs in remote northern Norway. I was living alone in a tiny cabin in the mountains, being responsible for up to 60 dogs of which I took care. When winter came I helped in a team training the dogs for the tourist season.
Our workaway experience together so far:
In March 2024 we helped grinding old paint of the steel-made hull of a sailing boat in Chile for two weeks.
In Febuary 2023 we spent two weeks at remote off-grid place in the jungle of Costa Rica. We worked on a construction site installing the underground rainwater pipeline system.
In 2020 we spent a few weeks at a permaculture place in northern Italy. Apart from working in the garden, preserving food and doing maintenance jobs, we were involved in the planning and designing process of a new plot of land using permaculture principles.

Due to our experience listed above we have all sorts of practical skills especially in gardening, construction and all kinds of maintenance tasks. Ferdi is also very skilled at organizing and optimizing any kind of process.
