DO YOU LOVE CATS & DOGS? WANT TO LEAVE YOUR FOOTPRINT ON THIS AWESOME PLANET?

Are you a beautiful soul that want to make a positive change and are committed to our project? If you are this person, please contact us

    OUR STORY:

Hi everyone, I’m Madi & I have been rescuing homeless cats & dogs for over 30 years before social media was popular so noone knew about my work.

My work started in Belize where I fished kittens from plastic bags thrown in the water to drown as most did not like cats & so adoption was not an option. This led me to open the first cat sanctuary in Belize and central america. TO DATE WE STILL HAVE 70 + SENIOR CATS HEALTHY & THRIVING at our senior cat home from 17 to 24 human years of age.

I continue my rescue work here in Mexico where i moved 7 years ago & i also do a monthly low cost sterilization clinics to control animal population & their suffering.

My work consists of total rehabilitation eg. Quaranteen, testing for contagious or other diseases, vaccinating, sterilizing & rehoming overseas as adoption is practically impossible.

Sterilization is the first & most important thing one can do to break the vicious cycle of more animals being born unwanted.

(We urge travelers that find animals to please not JUST feed them but to please get in contact with an ngo or vet clinic & sterilize them, this is the most humane thing you can do for a dog or cat.

Everday is a struggle to do the impossible to continue caring for these beautiful souls as finances are always low & especially after covid where we lost our business that was used to finance our work, but they are worth it.

If anyone reading this understands our dilemna there are so many ways everyone can help & we welcome & value any help we can get. Example:

    1. Spread the word about our workaway volunteer program to others on social media.

    2. Set up a table at different events in your city to spread the word about our volunteering program & fundraise for our rescue.

    3. Start a go fund me for our rescue.

    4. Spread the word about our animals on adoption.

    5. Adopt a dog or cat.

    6. Donate a bag of food or other on our Amazon wishlist.

    7. Become a monthly donor via our paypal account.

    8. If you are traveling to vancouver Canada please help escort a dog or cat to their fur-ever home as tgey have been adopt and have no way to get there.

    9. LIKE & OUR PAGES !!

If you would like to help & have other ideas please contact us.

Please keep in mind that the cats and dogs at this sanctuary do not live the way your pet would live in your home, most cats share a room and a couple that can't get along are separated as well as the dogs who are separated in the front and backyard.

ARE YOU EMOTIONALLY, MENTALLY & PHYSICALLY STRONG?

We need persons who really love animals, but that are also strong physically, mentally and emotionally & can walk away at the end of their work without feeling sad or bad that you cannot do more and understand that this is how rescue work is and that unfortunately there are not enough homes for animals and some may not get adopted.

In addition, you also need to realize that this is a third world country, funds are always limited & that everyday we need to prioritize if we can build eg. a shed, put up a wall etc. or buy food.

You need to be open minded about how rescue is done here and that we try to do our best with what we have, we may not do things the way you are used to see it done in shelters or rescues in your country but remember this is why you travel to learn & appreciate the difference.

    IMPORTANT!!!!!
You also need to realize that you are coming to live at a rescue with cats & dogs therefore expect the following:

    1. You may hear barking & meowing,
    2. Find hair on your pillow or beds,
    3. Feel a warm cuddly little body in your bed as our 3 resident cats may climb to cuddle with you at night,
    4. You may smell pee, poop, vomit etsetera.

In regards to the rescue home, nothing fancy, no hot water, no AC, it may seem primitive to what you are used to but its all we've got, but its a place full of love and tiny little bodies ready to share their love with you & receive yours.

Here 90% of dogs and cats are discarded like garbage. It's a massive problem. This is why we do the work we do and this is why we need people that want to come here for the sole reason of helping animals.

people that are looking for a more quiet environment cuddling animals, reading, yoga, meditating will thrive here). That being said, it can be an adventure of a lifetime if you are coming with the right intentions.

We need people who genuinely love cats & dogs to cuddle our senior kitties & give lots of doggie head scratches & tummy rubs as they are so needy for love and attention :)

Please read my profile and let me know why you are passionate about animals & why you feel you will be good for the position. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks

This is a great oppurtunity to learn something new!

Here you can learn about rescue work as you may be assisting with trapping dogs/ cats in horrific conditions if we have a case going on when you are here.

Also we have a vet clinic twice a month & if you are here during one of our clinic we ask volunteers to help us out in the reception, prepping, recover or release areas.

You will get to see how many lives we save by preventing the birth of thousands of unwanted animals that would have ended up on the streets.

In addition, you will also see and experience how people live in the South of Mexico as well as practice spanish with the locals as this is not a touristy town and you will be forced to speak spanish in the super market or whereever you go as the majority dont speak any english.

Currently we have 2, 5 month old puppies and 2 adult dogs we need help with.

We also have 18 senior kitties 19 + yrs. & 4 younger kitties at the animal home.

WE ARE LOOKING FOR COMMITTED VOLUNTEERS THAT WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF RESCUED CATS & DOGS. SOMEONE THAT IS PASSIONATE ABOUT THE PLIGHT OF HOMELESS ANIMALS & TRULY WANT TO POUR THEIR SOULS INTO HELPING ANIMALS NOT JUST WANTING A FREE PLACE TO CRASH & SAVE FOR YOUR NEXT MOVE. (THERE IS A 2 DAY PROBATION & IF YOU ARE NOT WHO YOU SAY YOU ARE AND ARE NOT HERE FOR THE RIGHT REASONS WE WILL ASK YOU TO LEAVE, SO PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, MAKE SURE THIS IS WHAT YOU REALLY WANT TO DO AND DONT WASTE YOUR TIME & OURS)

VOLUNTEERS THAT WILL DO WELL HERE POSSESS THESE QUALITIES:

    1. COMMITTED PERSON that loves both cats & dogs. We need people who really love animals and are comitted to stay there full time as arranged . If you looking for a rewarding experience this is the right place. If you fit this profile, we are looking forward to meeting you! (If you're an animal lover, it won't even feel like work:)

    2. Organized
    3. Clean
    4. Have common sence
    5. Have initiative
    6. Patient
    7. Down to earth, not high maintenance.

(PLEASE NOTE THAT MAKING CHANGES TAKES TIME, DON'T EXPECT TO COME FOR A WEEK OR TWO & THINK YOU HAVE THE ANSWERS TO EVERYTHING & TOTALLY DISREGARD THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN DONE OVER TIME!!!) Remember, if you want to make changes, give some of your time & stay longer.

**Also if you are from vancouver, Canada, or know anyone traveling to Mexico from there, please help us spread the word to help us find flight escorts to accompany our animals that have been adopted there to take them to their forever homes. It cost you nothing extra & we handle everything.

We accept close friends and couples, however, you must be aware that your schedule & days off will be different because we need to have coverage.

We are very flexible & open to any ideas & opinions that can help better the lives of our rescues.

    POSITIONS AVAILABLE:

    1. kitty & doggie volunteers. Must love both. Position include feeding, cleaning & cuddlings animals.

    SAMPLE OF SENIOR CAT ROUTINE:

The work is a combined effort between 2 volunteers. We will be rotating the work. Some days you start with kitties then dogs & other days with dogs and then cats.

    A. Before going up to care for the cats you need to clean the stairs leading up to the kitty area as there is a cat who marks at the foot of the stairs everyday & you will be stepping in it & spread all over if its not taken care if.

    B. Go up to your assign room & feed your kitties fallowing the diet as stated & places you need to put them to eat. observe that they are all eating & no one is eating it for them ( there are some little bullies in each room)

    C. While they are eating scoop litter boxes fallowing the procedure how its done ( this is super important so we dont waste litter).

Also at times the animals miss & pee goes under the boxes so its important to have near your bucket , gloves, rag & vinigar to clean the the bottom of the litter boxes.

We place cardboard boxes under the litter boxes to abserve the pee so once you note that the cardboard boxes are wet you you must remove & throw away & replace with clean boxes, but please make sure you wipe the floor with vinigar before new boxes are replaced.

    D. Thoroughly sweep room making sure everything is picked up & move to separate area while you sweep everywhere, then replace things where they were. ( this is important as we have blind animals that have learned where everything is & if you move its stressful & they will deficate on floor if tbey cant locate).

    E. Mopp the floor with damp mop with vinigar & soap. (Not drooping water or it will never dry & kitties will get wet & sick)

    F. Pick up dirty dishes & wash & dry & bring back to your room ready for evening routine.

    G. Wash water bowls & replace them with fresh water everyday with water from the bottles not from the faucet.

    H. Wash your tools every evening after the evening routine. Eg. Brooms, mops, wash clots & hang to dry. We will show you how to do it .

    SUPER IMPORTANT!!!
P.S. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR TOOLS. YOU MUST NOT SHARE YOUR TOOLS WITH OTHER ROOMS TO PREVENT CROSS CONTAMINATION!!!!

YOU MUST NEVER TAKE ANYTHING RELATING TO THE CATTERIES IN THE UPPER AREA OF THE SENIOR CATS SECTION TO ANOTHER PART OF THE HOUSE!!! EVERYTHING IN YOUR CATTERY REMAINS IN THAT AREA!!!!

ALSO IF FOOD IS LEFT OVER IN YOUR ROOM , LEAVE IN THAT ROOMS SO OTHER KITTIES FROM THAT ROOM CAN EAT IT!!

DO NOT SHARE WITH ANOTHER ROOM OR YOU CAN SPREAD ONE INFECTION FROM THAT ROOM TO ANOTHER!!!!

PS. Everyone is responsible for everything
relating to the cats in the room you are assigned.

Everyday after every meal you must report to madi how kitties are doing eg. If they did not eat, if they sneezing, if going in & out the litter box as if they cant pee, if you see blood or vomit in litter box or floor etc. Anything weird report right away.

Once i check cats & they need meds you will be responsable to give them meds, nubilize them, give them drips or fluids under the skin & be persistente & patient trying different foods to nurse them back to health. We will teach you every thing.

    I. OF COURSE cuddling kitties ;) You can do this at any time, some of the kitties are eager for attention & some keep to themselves;) this is part of the job, you must be comfortable being around kitties & cuddling them.

Also pups eat 3 x day so you have to be on top of things to pick up and clean pee & poop right away, be observant if they are eating , not active or they look sick & report to madi right away.

Water bowls must be cleaned & we need to be attentive to water bowls in case they spilled water or bowl is empty so we can replace water as its very hot here.

There are 2 adult dogs that spend time outdoor and we must be attentive if dogs are hot outside around noon and if so put in kennel indoors.

    OUR HOUSE:

WE DO NOT PROVIDE FOOD !!!

We do not provide bottled water, but the water is cheap $.16 pesos for a 20 liter bottle .

WE DO NOT PROVIDE PRIVATE ROOMS FOR COUPLES.

    WE DO NOT PROVIDE TOILETRIES.

The volunteer home was our hostel but we lost our business due to COVID.

    AWE PROVIDE

We provide shared accommodation only in our small 2 bunk bed dorm that sleeps 4 volunteers.

    -We provide sheets& pillows

    - wifi

    - dishes, pots & pans, cuttlery, electric stove & fridge.

We do not have A/C but we have portable floor fans to keep cool during sleep hours only. PLEASE BE CONSCIENCIOUS & TURN OFF FANS WHEN YOU LEAVE THE ROOMS!!!!

Please understand you are living in an animal rescue and there are 3 cats living with the volunteers and share the entire place with you including sleeping in your rooms. The dogs are very sweet but do bark at times and the cats will also meow at times.

All volunteers are responsible for the following on their own time, we DO NOT PROVIDE A MAID & YOU MUST RESPECT OTHER VOLUNTEERS:

1.keeping the volunteer house clean eg. washing their own dishes , cleaning stove & counter top when you use it, clean frig, throw away spoil food, keep your bathroom clean etc.

    2. taking out the garbage on time.

    3. Making sure the floor is swept & mopped ( WITH THE MOP OR THE RIGHT FLOOR CLOTH) not the dish rag or another volunteer's towel!!! If you spill water you clean it up right away as someone can fall & get hurt!

    4. Being responsible with the tools we provide you to do the cleaning & with cat & dog food. Eg. Not break the mop or broom almost everyday & ask me for a new one, be responsible, things cost money , we are an ngo and always struggling with money issues to continue to do the work we do.

If the animals leave food give to another cat in the same room.(however never give left over food to our tamed animals inside the rescue that you gave to an outdoor cat if he did not finish it, however you can give it to a dog. Reason is a cat can have a disease and spread it to another cat but cannot spread to a dog) If a dog leaves food, cover & give him later but do not share with another dog, because of the same reason with the cats.

WE DO NOT THROW LEFT OVER ANIMAL FOOD AWAY IT COSTS MONEY!!!!

    ABOUT CHETUMAL:

Chetumal is a very safe small bay city with practically no tourists and lots to do nearby.

Although a coastal town, there is no beach in Chetumal. The bay of Chetumal is river water from the Rio Hondo river separating Belize from Mexico & Caribbean sea water sneeking in through Canals, that said, we have a lovely boardwalk called the boulevard to walk along the water with restaurants, shops, antros & bars where you can run, rent & ride a bike or skates.

The bulevard is a 10 minute taxi ride from the house costing 25 pesos or you can take a collectivo in front of our gate at 7 pesos and walk from the last stop. To walk is about 45 minutes.

Across the street, there is the only mall in Chetumal called Plaza Las Americas with a Mcdonalds, Supermarket, TelCel, Movie Theatre showing the latest movies at 45 to 50 pesos per person, lots of stores, a casino, doctor's clinic at 50 pesos per visit, dental cleaning at 200 pesos, a game room for your kid at heart & much more.

There is also a Natural Food store, hair salon, clothing shops, a department store, a food court and more.

The community that the house is in is very friendly and quiet.

The ADO bus station and a laundry places are less than a 10 minute walk away.

There are also a few small family-run restaruant 3 blocks from the house.

For those who want swim/explore nearby towns, we are a 15 minute ride to Laguna Millagros, a 25 minute ride to Bacalar, 15 minute ride to Calderitas which has a small beach and an 1 hour ride to ruins at Xpujil.

For those who like extreme sports their is a cenote 1 hr. Away where yiu have to bike, kayak and rapel into the cenote. Its a breathtaking place!

The taxis, collectivos and buses are very cheap and park across the street from the house!
