Detalhes

Descrição
We are based in the mountains of Waterval Boven, South Africa, on an off-grid nature reserve surrounded by forest, cliffs, waterfalls, birds, wildlife and big skies.
The place is rustic, peaceful and still very much in progress. We live with solar power, mountain spring water, simple cabins, shared meals, limited internet and a close relationship with the land. It is not luxury, but it has a kind of natural magic .
The next chapter is to gently open up and shape a forest garden area into a beautiful natural space where people can one day camp, gather around fires, share food, celebrate under the trees, walk forest paths, and enjoy simple moments in nature.
The long-term dream is a small forest garden party / natural gathering space. The immediate work is much more practical: clearing overgrowth, opening paths, preparing camping spots, improving access, thinking through parking, toilets, water points, outdoor cooking, seating, fire areas, signage, lighting and the overall flow of the land.
I am only on site a few days each month, so this opportunity is best suited to a practical couple, two friends, or mature independent volunteers who are happy to spend time in nature, work without constant supervision, communicate clearly and take gentle ownership of the tasks in front of them.
This is a place for forest people, campers, makers, gardeners, practical dreamers and anyone who enjoys turning a wild, forgotten corner of land into something meaningful and beautiful.

Oportunidades de intercâmbio cultural e aprendizado
This is a chance to experience a simple off-grid lifestyle in a beautiful mountain setting.
You can learn about:
- Living with solar power and limited resources.
- Using mountain spring water carefully.
- Rustic cabin life and shared outdoor living.
- Forest gardening, mulching, composting and natural land care.
- Creating low-impact camping and gathering spaces.
- Basic path-making, natural design and practical problem-solving.
- The realities of building a nature project slowly, with limited time and a lot of imagination.
There is also space for hiking, fireside conversations, photography, creative thinking, nature watching, swimming in mountain pools when conditions allow, and exploring the surrounding waterfalls and forests.
This is not a formal course or retreat. It is more of a living project, where the exchange comes through doing, sharing ideas, solving problems and spending time close to the land.
Ajuda
The main focus at the moment is the forest garden, campsite and future gathering area.
Possible help includes:
- Clearing overgrown areas, paths and future camping spots.
- Opening a natural forest clearing without overdeveloping it.
- Preparing simple tent sites and peaceful corners in the forest.
- Improving access paths, steps, trail markers and basic parking flow.
- Helping think through where people would arrive, park, camp, cook, gather, wash and relax.
- Creating rustic seating, fire circles, signs, natural edges and simple forest features.
- Helping with compost areas, water points, outdoor washing areas and low-impact toilet ideas.
- Gardening, mulching, planting, pruning and shaping the land in an organic way.
- General maintenance around cabins, paths, fences, tools, wood piles and shared spaces.
- Creative projects such as handmade signs, natural art, solar lighting ideas or quiet meditation corners.
The help is physical and outdoors. You should be comfortable getting dirty, using basic hand tools, carrying branches, moving stones, clearing brush, digging, walking on uneven ground and working in changing weather.
You do not need to be an expert, but a practical attitude helps a lot. Experience with gardening, landscaping, permaculture, basic building, camping, trail work, outdoor events or off-grid living would be very welcome.

Acomodação
Accommodation is rustic, simple and off-grid.
Depending on availability, volunteers may stay in one of the basic cabins or in a camping area. The cabins are not luxury, but they are peaceful and close to nature. There are shared kitchen and ablution areas, mountain spring water, solar power for basic needs, and simple communal spaces.
Internet is limited, and phone signal can vary. This is a place to slow down, spend time outside, work with your hands and disconnect from the usual rush of life.
Please come with a spirit of simplicity. Things here are beautiful, but they are also practical, wild and sometimes imperfect.
Algo mais...
Waterval Boven is known for mountains, cliffs, waterfalls, hiking, climbing and wild natural beauty. The land itself has forest walks, birdlife, quiet corners, rustic cabins and a peaceful off-grid feeling.
This place is magical, but it is also remote and practical. Volunteers will need to manage their own food menu and basic supplies. When I am on site at the beginning, I can take you to the nearest town so we can buy enough dry goods and essentials for a 1 to 3 month extended stay. After that, we can make ad hoc arrangements with the nearby guest resort, which receives food deliveries regularly, for fresh items and smaller top-ups.
Having your own vehicle is highly recommended, but not always essential if we plan properly. Please note that the final access to camp is rustic, and low-clearance vehicles may not reach the camp itself. In that case, there is an approximately 800m walk from the guest resort parking area down the road.
I am only on site a few days each month. When you arrive, it will take 5 days to show you how everything works — water, power, tools, supplies, access, camp systems and the main tasks — so that you are properly set up and comfortable continuing independently.
Before we confirm anything, please let me know whether you are comfortable with rustic off-grid living, managing your own food, and what kind of outdoor work you most enjoy.
Warm regards,
Warren
