We are a family of four with teenage sons who are now mostly away. We own a beautiful 40 acre croft on a Scottish Island called Lismore. It is a long, slim island situated at the mouth of the great Glen in loch Linnhe and is easy to get to; (5 min from Appin and 50 min from Oban by boat). This is a lush, fertile island with incredible views of the surrounding mountains and waters.
Our vision is to create a beautiful and inspirational nugget of Scotland where we can live self sufficiently and gently on the land, however we have a lot to do to get there and need plenty of help. I am a textile artist and run my business from a studio on the croft. I run textile retreats as well as make products and commissions for sale. My husband is a carpenter and is presently consumed with building our very hand made house as well as attending to the various demands of the croft. We have about 100 Shetland sheep,, 7 hens, 2 cats and one dog so if you're allergic to animal hair or dust, best stear clear! We are easy going, sociable and both love and play music. We do eat our own lamb but lots of salads and vegetables too.
The community of Lismore is a vibrant and sociable one with a population of around 180. There are lots of activities including cinema nights, country dancing, house ceilidh's, concerts and more but be warned, there is no pub on the island and only one shop. Sarah runs the community choir so singers are always welcome. Everybody knows each other here and it is a bit like a very large family.

Oportunidades de intercâmbio cultural e aprendizado

Helpers have the opportunity to experience island life, the community of Lismore and an alternative lifestyle.
We can also offer experience and plenty of tips in whichever aspect of the build you are involved with such as stonework, straw bale building, lime rendering, carpentry, roofing, joinery, wood framing and more. We are constantly learning and experimenting in our vegetable garden and exploring new techniques such as using sheeps wool, seaweed and beach gravel mulch in a "No Dig" approach.
Helpers can also potentially learn about fencing, dry stone dyking, Shetland sheep and their management.
You can also witness the working of a small textile design business although help is not required in this arena.

  • Ajuda

We are looking for robust, healthy, hard working volunteers with a love of nature and the great outdoors. Help is focused on creating our Eco home so we appeal to workawayers with construction skills: (woodworkers, stone masons, plasterers, plumbers and electricians) and also helpers who are physically strong and enjoy stone lifting, digging, block laying etc. Volunteers are also involved in helping with the farm animals and veggie garden.
We welcome musicians because we are musical ourselves so that is a bonus although not completely necessary.
Our climate is a wet and windy one although we do enjoy spells of dry and warm so this is an opportunity for tough grafters rather than tender types. However I think the stunning views and constantly changing light more than makes up for the weather.

  • Acomodação

We are presently living in interim accomodation on the croft while completing the house build. We eat and relax in Sarah's textile studio which has a large kitchen area, a shower and sofas on the mezzanine where we also watch films with an old screen and projector. The studio is situated in the barn but is pretty civilized!
We have a compost toilet in the barn and sleeping areas consist of a bus (converted into a home), a camping pod, a caravan and a 6 man tent. We tend to try to work it so that helpers have their own sleeping space but on occasion helpers share the larger spaces such as the bus.
