I’m a Canadian woman living in sunny Clearwater, Florida, and I run a small nonprofit focused on re-entry support, prison reform, youth mentoring, and helping families in need in the St. Petersburg / Tampa / Bradenton area. We also provide mental health support for veterans.

As a WorkAway volunteer with us, you’ll get to make a real impact by supporting people rebuilding their lives after incarceration. Tasks include helping with reading, daily organization, going to activities in the community, and providing encouragement and companionship. Volunteers may also assist my brother, who has ADHD, with staying organized and completing everyday tasks.

We also have a lively, animal-filled household! You’ll meet two playful Pomeranian puppies and Yak, a rescued 5 lb chihuahua, who all love attention and playtime. If you love animals, there’s plenty of dog and cat love to go around!

This is a chance for a meaningful cultural exchange—you’ll learn about the U.S. justice and mental health systems, develop new skills, and experience life in Florida while making a positive difference.

We try to keep things fun, flexible, and supportive, so if you enjoy helping people, working with animals, and learning through hands-on experience, this could be a great fit!

Our work is rooted in nonprofit efforts, and we rely heavily on the dedication and passion of our volunteers to sustain our mission. We do operate on a limited budget and, unfortunately, cannot afford to pay for everyone's expenses or offer financial compensation. While I provide food in the house to ensure that basic needs are met, any additional outings, such as dining out, will need to be covered by the WorkAwayers themselves.

You’ll stay in a shared room in our home with my family, creating a supportive and welcoming environment. You’ll be helping with individuals rebuilding their lives after incarceration, assisting my brother, who has ADHD, and taking part in other meaningful activities around the house.

While I provide meals in the house to cover basic needs, any additional outings, like dining out, will need to be covered by volunteers themselves. Snacks are always available, and you’re welcome to cook your own meals as well.

I work full-time on top of organizing our nonprofit, so my schedule is busy—usually 7 AM to 7 PM, Monday through Thursday—so I can guarantee time to connect at dinner and throughout the house. I’ll also provide some groceries so you can stock up on your favorite foods.

This is a chance to make a real difference, gain hands-on experience in re-entry support, mental health, and community work, and enjoy life in Florida alongside a fun, energetic, and supportive household.

Where to begin... I guess you're not only a poor communicator, but also a #redacted# I would like to address mismatches in your text. First of all, the whole time I thought I will go to Florida, but you asked me to change my flight destination to New Orleans a couple weeks before my arrival. You stated that you clearly communicated that it's an re … read more entry house that I am going to, but it was only an idea to open it when you had contacted me. "Kristina showed little interest in contributing meaningfully to our mission" Let me ask you what I didn't do what you asked me to do?
First of all, when I came to the house it was an absolute mess. Your lovely brother left the volunteer room untidy, I swiped the pile of dust and hair from the floor it was very very dirty. Common area was also a mess floors were disgusting, bathroom as well. Kitchen cabinets disorganized you couldn't find anything there. There weren't cleaning supplies to clean the house so I asked you to order it. So I arrived on late Tuesday evening almost Wednesday. On Wednesday we did orientation, I had to watch a lot of videos which were about justice system, documentaries. There was basically no food in the fridge with four people in the house. I had two sandwiches that my sister in law made for the flight and then I borrowed some food from the house manager. The closest store is 9-10 min by car, but unreachable by foot or bicycle so the manager was kind and drove me to the store to buy food . So no, you did not feed me, I ate my own food. On Thursday I watched another documentary for 1:30 hours and that was it for the day. Also I received the information that the house manager is suddenly leaving when she planned to stay there at least 4 weeks. Maybe she changed her opinion when I told her that the house opened only in August 1 st and she didn't know that, because the house resident had been living there for 4 months already. On Thursday house manager land another volunteer left the house leaving me alone in the house with a resident. I didn't know about him in the first place, you could inform me who he is and that he's gonna be there. Mind the fact that I came into remote place and I am left alone with a stranger. I don't have anything bad to say about him, because he was respectful, he listened and helped me to clean the house. So on Friday we cleaned a lot. That was everything I did, but it was my personal initiative. In afternoon I found a random man in the kitchen apparently he came to fix the dishwasher and I didn't know about it, but the resident did. Also he told me about Airbnb guest that is coming in the evening. You said that we were informed about Airbnb guests on our schedule, but your schedule starts from October and Airbnb guest came on September 27th which was a surprise to me, but she was cool we connected more in two days than I did with you in two weeks. Where I am going with this you were communicating with the resident, but not me and I had to control his medication and cigarettes.
I was very upset about everything and wanted to leave, I told you that I want to talk to you on face time, but you shifted the subject and assured me that when you come back on Monday everything will go into places. During the weekend you created a WhatsApp group and then I started receiving more information about the chores and what I will be doing there because almost one week in I still didn't know to what mission I am contributing to.
So you came back with another volunteer and barely looked at me maybe you were afraid of confrontation. The whole time when I was there we didn't talk much we just couldn't connect somehow and you obviously weren't interested to know more about me.
"However, she was frequently dismissive and rude toward myself, my mother, and our clients, often ignoring basic requests to clean up after herself and leaving common areas, particularly the kitchen, in disarray." It couldn't be further from the truth I was the one who cleaned up your messy house, I even washed the dishes before leaving on Sunday and took the sheets of my bed. We were 6 people in the house and I am the one who left the house in disarray? Your requests were always answered and I did mop floors even when I was sick, I would've appreciated your interested about my health, because when you had migraine we asked you if you need help or medication, but I didn't receive the same questions. Speaking about not keeping up with the chores, our resident didn't wash the dishes and it was his turn that day, the sink was overflowing and mind you I always wash my own dishes. You started scolding us about chores and at the same time you were washing dishes for him. Other thing is that I've never met your mother in person, the only contact I had with her was when you would talk with her on the phone and asked us to say hello. That's it. Does hello sound rude? The rudest thing I've said to you was that as a psychologist you are very immature and I think it is very true since you couldn't address any problems or miscommunications in person, but proceeded to write long texts on the phone.
"More disturbingly, Kristina made racially insensitive comments toward our resident, impacting his confidence and well-being. Her impatience and inappropriate remarks during reading lessons further demonstrated a lack of respect for the vulnerable individuals we serve".
Never have I ever said anything about his or anyone's race in my life, because I don't care what's the color of your skin I care about the content of your character. Reading lessons went pretty good, but it wasn't easy. I was hoping to follow a plan to how and what teach him, but I had to find lessons by myself on Youtube. I didn't say anything inappropriate to him I was helping to memorize the letters and words sometimes it took very long, but I waited patiently until he would get that information. I don't think I've impacted his confidence and well-being in any way, because he was very confident when he took your phone and didn't give it back or when he was telling you whether you can buy another dog or no counting your money or when when he's constantly coming in and out of your room. You got offended when I asked if you will allow the same to the other residents in the future. Will you take them to the bar to smoke when they have a problem will cigarette consumption.
I thought this house is gonna be an institution type where you offer programs for people re entering the society, but that is not happening and you're not telling potential collaborators this. #redacted#
"Her lack of respect, insensitive behavior, and disregard for her responsibilities severely impacted our community and undermined the safe, inclusive environment we work hard to maintain." You knew when I was suppose to leave one week in advance and on the day of our departure we texted you oh no it was not me and other volunteer, but another one, because you took us out of the group even before leaving the house instead of coming to the room and talking in PERSON. Your were disappointed that we didn't say goodbye, but you were told that we are leaving and you didn't bother to get out from your room. I think me washing the dishes was more than enough.
#redacted# By the way, winning at the casino was the highlight of the my stay there. Also I am most happy about the friendships I am taking with me. I connected with the girls and we, without a doubt, will see each other again. As I said in the past, idea of this non profit is very good and necessary, but lacks direction, structure, communication, boundaries. Good luck in the future. It's not my first volunteering experience so I am not fooled so easily and I know how it should be, because other places set the bar pretty high. Future volunteers advice for you always do an interview with a host and make sure that you connect with them, keep them accountable, leave honest reviews and if you feel that you need to leave don't be afraid of doing that. Your time is very precious.
