Coorg or Kodagu is part of Western Ghats, of India recognized as one of the top hotspots of biodiversity in the world. Coorg ( Kodagu )one of the smallest districts, is home to 8% of India’s and 35% of Karnataka’s plant resources.
Learn traditional knowledge system in our country, inventories, record all ethno-botanical and cultural information among the diverse ethnic communities before the traditional cultures are completely lost. Therefore, documentation of information will help us in conserving the knowledge.
Volunteers can make a comprehensive database of the plants used for various purposes and could be saved for the forthcoming generations. With these information the Specialists can conduct laboratory investigations and clinical trials and suggest to validate the therapeutic properties of these wild edible fruits for effective and safe use.
Volunteers can experience life in rural / interior south India, learn organic farming techniques of traditional farmers, natural building and working on a sustainable ecological farm. Also they can learn about Kodava community, comprising the many aspects that together make that ‘way of life’ – their dress, language, social structure, ancestral homes, religious practices, customs, festivals, songs and dances. Know how Kodava community worship the elements of nature – the sun, fire and water and witness another interesting example of nature worship by Kodavas is their devakad (sacred groves). We have a small pond and Spring water available from our own spring and will be filtered and provided. We also have packaged drinking water for drinking. We Practice farming in harmony with the moon and the stars and the sun, practice-Traditional Indian bio-dynamics , we produce all that is required for the fertility of the land, and production, within the land itself. Learning from how things are done by the moon, with the tides of plants and trees and in harmony with the forces of nature. In olden days we all possessed the common knowledge of when it was good to plant, to weed, to prune trees, to cut / shading your trees. With the loss of stories and the migration to cities most of us have lost the old way and no longer are even aware of lunar cycles - our philosophy of self sustainability.
