When my original Workaway arrangement fell through, Catherine kindly took me in on very short notice—a blessing in disguise, as I ended up having an unforgettable experience! As my first Workaway, I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction; I didn’t want to leave.
I spent three wonderful weeks with Catherine, who welcomed me into her home
… read more and introduced me to her lovely family and friends. She looked after me and shared her extensive knowledge of nature—she’s an incredibly knowledgeable woman. My work primarily involved a community regeneration project, which was deeply rewarding. On rainy days, I kept busy with cleaning, baking, and making homemade marmalade and pickles. I also did lots of cooking, which I loved, especially since Catherine had such a lovely kitchen to work from.
One of the unexpected highlights was giving the pigs and piglets tummy scratches—it was such a joy! Beyond work, I had the chance to enjoy the beach and spend time at the Maruia house with Catherine, which was such a wholesome experience. She is such a warm, kind-hearted person and truly a pleasure to be around. Every day was filled with learning and appreciation, and I truly cherished my time there. When I return to New Zealand, I’ll make sure to visit her again!

Catherine and her parents were welcoming! 3 of us stayed and worked on native plant planting and protecting and veggie garden tasks. We also got to enjoy baby piglets and lambs. Was wonderful to talk and exchange stories with this kiwi family who has lived there for generations. Thanks!

Jose and Vanessa stayed with me for just a week, the weather wasn’t great unfortunately. They were very helpful & did every task asked, I was very grateful for cleaning the kitchen and windows. What a little gem of a person Lottie is, hard not to instantly like her. She is kind, sweet & super caring for others but especially for animals. All our animals had daily cuddles & extra love.

I had the best stay with Catherine and her family. I ended up staying for 3 weeks but easily could've stayed longer. Catherine was so kind and generous. If you like cuddling various animals and getting involved in local regeneration projects then this is the place to be. Lots of planting jobs in cool locations, learning about the native plants.

-Vinyard (bud rubbing, thinning, pruning, tying, suckering)
-Manuka bay project. (Native planting, attaching protectors, wool mats and ground clearance.
-Camp ground maintenance (Mowing, strimming, hedge trimming)
-Animal care, Pig, lamb, chickens, (care and feeding).

The work was interesting and fulfilling, from weeding her vegetable garden and helping maintain the grass at the campsite, to planting native trees by the coast. Catherine is an inspiration with her sustainability projects and her passion for making a difference in our climate. I’m so thankful to have been part of this cause!

We spent 2 weeks at Catherine's place and they went by in the blink of an eye.
Everybody was really welcoming.
The accommodation was really nice and the surroundings are so beautiful and peaceful.
Work was always diverse and fulfilling. Among other things, we fed the dogs, chickens, sheeps and pigs. Did some weeding in the vegetable garden.

We also had the opportunity to help around at Catherine's parents place which is nearby. It was a wonderful experience as Jane and Richard are really nice people.
The food was great and abundant, we prepared our own lunch and breakfast with the ingredients Catherine bought and everything we wanted from the garden. And it was always nice to share a meal with Catherine's family!
Catherine always made sure we had plans and gave us directions on witch trails we could try when we wanted to have a walk. We could also borrow the bikes if we wanted to go to Cheviot (careful, it goes up on the way back). We spent very nice times together, such as New Year's Eve in Gore Bay!
All in all, we wouldn't hesitate to come back to Catherine's place, as we had a wonderful workaway experience.

Cheviot is a small town but there are lots of things to do around the house during my free time. There are places for hiking, biking, a hot tub to chill in and many animals to keep you accompany. If you love dogs, this will be a great place for you cause there are 3 lovely dogs waiting for you to cuddle and play with them (Wilson, Frank and Sophie).
Catherine is a very positive, intelligent, and kind lady. She has so much travel stories and experiences to share. I enjoyed all the conversations we had together and learnt so much from her!
