We are a yound couple with two young girls from Chicago who have moved to uruguay permanently to live slowly and off the land. We produce food mainly for our own. consumption.
We have done work stays in the past and would like to share the same experience we had with others. We enjoy sharing our experiences and would like to afford others the opportunity for slow, low-cost travel.
The details of the accommodations are as follows. We have a tiny rustic cabin that is entirely off-grid. This means there is no running water or electricity in the cabin. It has a double bed with a mosquito net, a space for showering with a pot you can heat on the stove (or in the sun), a bucket (dry/composting) toilet, and a stove for cooking on your own. There is access to water outside our house and a place to charge a cell phone or computer on our porch. We do have unlimited wifi which you should be able to access at the cabin. You will have to empty your own toilet compost which is tied up with a biodegradable bag and composted on our property.
We don't provide food because we are not yet producing any food, but in return for staying in the cabin we expect only 3 hours of work per day, and you can choose your own hours. The only kind of food we can provide is some herbs, a type of onion (walking onion), and the following if they are in season: walnuts, tomatoes, strawberries, grapes, pears, mulberries, mora (a kind of local currant), araza (a local fruit). There will be days where we expect you to work on your own if we have other things happening. If the cabin is too hot to be in in the middle of the day, we do have a hammock and plenty of outdoor shaded areas you are welcome to use. For most workers, this off-grid cabin is a good opportunity to unplug and reset. Workers enjoy eating dinner by candlelight and not being connected to the internet at all times. But we do want people to be aware of what the accommodations are like: not for those who have an aversion to camping!
We have a bike for you to use and we go to town and the beach regularly and can drop you off places if you want to do some exploring in the area. A nice schedule would be to go exploring in the morning and work in the evening, or vice versa. If it seems we have more tasks to complete you could stay longer, but it depends on what kinds of work we identify to be done.
We are currently working on a lot of infrastructure projects. We are building up our garden, rennovating a ruin, building up an orchard, cutting wood in the forest, and trying to ramp up food production by getting chickens and two or three cows, none of which we have yet. We could use your help in any of these projects. We have two small kids and online jobs so we never have enough time ourselves to complete all the tasks we need to do outdoors. We will probably need to set you up with some work to be able to work alone while we either take care of our kids or do our online work.

We are just getting settled in Uruguay, so many of our projects include cleaning out and renovating a ruin, planting new permaculture/perennial plants, setting up a vegetable garden patch, repairing fencing and other start-up projects. We can also use help with child care or house work in our home.

Close to a beach with good swimming and fresh water (our land is 5 miles from Playa Fomento)
Close enough (but far enough away) from a world class city. We are 2 hours by bus and ferry from Buenos Aires. (“To call Buenos Aires a cultural giant is an understatement.”)
Close to a small town with most services (we are within 10 miles to Nueva Helvecia, Rosario, and Colonia Valdense where we can find most things we would need)
