We are an english family living on the outskirts of a small village in the Charente.,where the french culture is a joy and plentiful.
I am Janet and I have a great passion for the outside life ,countryside and horses.We have 4 horses /two donkeys/three dogs and chickens.
I have lived in France for the passed 20 years . With my son who also share these passions .
At weekends you can often find us at antique / junk fairs which is get fun.
Our house.dates from 1774 there is plenty to do in the house and garden .
We have a large vegetable garden ,so there is always plenty of nice veg .

We are looking for cheerful ,hardworking helpers who can assist with on going restoration work and general maintenance of our beautiful house and gardens . There is plenty of gardening ,pruning and fencing to be done ,help in the house and animal care is also needed.
We have recently saved two young horses from the bouchers .The grey horse in photo is very quite to ride and this spring I would like to train a second horse and would like a helper for this . I also have a very quite !4.1 hh pony for the more novice rider . The horse work is an option .

We can offer single or double rooms in our old manor house which dates from 1770 .We enjoy mealtimes around a large kitchen table .Food is very important to us and we all enjoy preparing traditional fresh recipes.We are happy to take turns in the kitchen or help to teach novice cooks.The house is very big ,you can be very independent and quite.The friendly village is easy walking distance and we have bike .On your days and time off we would be happy to take you to the nearest train/bus station !5 minutes away .
The main house is also a bed and breakfast ,so sometime there will be other guests we are off the beaten track ,so the guest are rare !

I enjoyed my experience so much, that I extended my stay at Janets from 4 to 10 weeks (may-july)! My main jobs were: taking care of the veggie garden and caring for the horses, but I also did a lot of other different jobs. At Janets, there is work for everyone, it is really versatile!
In the vegetable garden I learned to: plant seeds, plant … read more seedlings, supporting plant growth, plant and vegetable bed maintenance, weeding, as well as harvesting of many different vegetables and fruits. There was also a lot of DIY to tackle in the veggie garden, from building an "anti-rabbit-fence" to building growth supports for the tomatoes from scratch! I learned so so much about gardening and it was an amazing feeling, being able to harvest what I planted myself 10 weeks ago.
My horsy jobs mainly consisted of taking care of Marly, a horse that needed a bit of retraining and attention. When Janet feels like you are skilled enough around horses, she betrusts you to care for them yourself and it was absolutely amazing! I am so grateful that I was able to work with Marly and to learn so much from him! I did many different kinds of ground work with him, liberty training, trailer loading, we went for walks or rides in the field or outside of the property. It felt like having your own horse, and in these 10 weeks I stayed with Janet, Marly and I were able to form a bond, we reached a lot of goals together, I learned so much from him and we just had the best time together! I was also lucky to take another horse, Smurf, on rides around the forest by myself! Furthermore, it was my task to regularly check on the horses wellbeing, like checking their water and controlling their grass intake, as well as feed them hay and just regular health check-ups, which I all really enjoyed!
But I also did many other jobs: I voluntarily did a lot of indoor and outdoor cleaning, which I really enjoyed. I learned how to wax and polish old wooden floors, how to plaster holes in the walls and how to sand and paint windows, window frames and shutters. In my last few days I also learned how to use the strimmer to cut the grass around the property and it was a lot of fun and really satisfying!

But what I enjoyed the most was that Janet and Felix make you feel welcomed and at home, the second you arrive, bevause they are so talkactive, honest, open and friendly. You immediately feel like part of the family, I had a lot of nice and long conversations with Janet over a cup of tea, sat at the kitchen table! Everything just feels really nice, uncomplicated and open! We often had a lot of people over for dinner or went to someones house, I was able to cook a lot of the time which I really enjoyed! I got to meet sooo many nice people, friendships formed and I made a lot of wonderful memories!
My freetime I either spent on the property (because it is so beautiful!!!), visiting places or meeting up with other workaways staying at Yvonnes (Janets best friend, she also lives in Montemboeuf and hosts workaways)! Janet was really generous and treats her workaways really nicely. We had picnics at the lake, went kajaking or just all met up every tuesday having really nice dinner together with Yvonne and her workaways.
These 10 weeks were an absolut blast, I learned so much and made soooo many amazing memories! I will definetly come back as soon as possible, Janets just the best!
