****Vaccinations are a requirement, as well as limited travel while here due to host being immunocompromised.****

Our hobby farm is very private and quiet. It is little piece of paradise on the hilltop overlooking the entire Madawaska Valley. You see nature at its most untouched specter, the mist rising out of the valley in the morning and the unforgettable view of the lake in the distance.

If you want to get a full taste of a rural lifestyle; the nature, hiking, kayaking, relaxing and working on a small hobby farm; if you want to do all this at a relaxed pace far from the city and its distractions then the farm might be the place for you.

The farm is 77 acres of mostly untouched acreage, which provides plenty of space for relaxation, photography and enjoyment of nature. The farm has its own walking trails, and places to explore. The farm is in the Madawaska Valley, Ontario which is just outside Algonquin Provincial Park. The farm is remote only in the sense that there is no major city nearby but plenty of smaller towns, and tourist sites.

The farm has a variety of very sweet animals four horses, a pony, couple of goats, three dogs and 3 cats. The horses are retired so there is no riding available. Just lots of animal love and joy.

In our main season you will be involved in cutting hay, baling and putting it in the barn for the winter. You will be called on to assist in farm projects, organizing, small repair work and general maintenance. You will also assist in feeding, and looking after the farm animals, including maintaining their enclosures.

Cathy the farm owner is a young active senior in her mid seventies. The family consists of two grown daughters, with their adult children, which live in the city but visit the farm often. Cathy is retired, enjoying the farm and all it has to offer. Cathy is not afraid of hard work, but she enjoys her downtime, companionship of friends and family, discussing all life has to offer and having a lot of laughs.

This last couple of years has brought on some life changes for Cathy, she has become widowed, and has experienced a few health issues, including a broken foot that has healed but still causes issues. But that hasn’t slowed her down at all but having a helping hand on the farm would provide the assistance needed to make things a little easier.

This is the true Canadian North, so you need to ensure that you have the appropriate attire for the season, hats, scarves, winter jacket and boots are a must in the winter. It does get quite cold but remains beautiful. Shorts, t-shirts and flip flops in the summer, with a light jacket for the cooler evenings.

Cathy is looking for someone that is willing to cook their own meals, and be self sufficient around the kitchen. Cathy doesn't eat at regular times and prefers to cook only when the joy of it calls to her.

We are looking for an intern that can assist on our hobby farm. Someone that is self-motivated, has experience with completing tasks without assistance and enjoys working alone. The intern will become a member of the family and if you see something that needs to get done, jump on it, own it and enjoy your sense of accomplishment. We need assistance with getting done all the little extras that are so easy to ignore. Such has lawn mowing, weed whacking, organizing the barns, or picking up something that is out of place. Someone that can pay attention to the smaller things.

Working with the horses and goats is easy as they manage to a schedule. They are like clockwork and have trained themselves! They will be waiting for you in the morning, in the evening for their feeding and some attention. The horses, and pony are well mannered, the goats love to play games and cause a little barnyard chaos. All are friendly and love attention.

No childcare is required, as we have no little ones on the farm.

Morning chores start around 8:30: putting hay out, let the horses out, clean stalls (takes less than an hour), feeding the horses, and tiding up the barnyard as needed.
Evening chores start at 4:30: let the horses in, feed them and fill water up (takes about half an hour). Prepare the pony food for the morning. Making sure the barn is tidy when you complete, and the morning will be easy breezy.

Light housework, vacuuming, dusting, helping with tasks as needed. Occasionally feeding the dogs and cats.
Summer assistance with doing the hay, putting it in the barn is required.

Winter months, snow removal on the walkways is a must and ensuring that the barn is accessible.

You will be provided a private room in the farmhouse, with a million dollar view. We have a full shower/bath, towels, soap and shampoos are available. Cathy will do your laundry as part of your internship at the farm.

We have satellite television, Wi-Fi and pretty well every other on-grid service. All of our interns so far have been able to keep in contact family and friends using Skype or a similar application. just bring your laptop or Ipad.

There is an area that you can sit outside and enjoy the scenery and the breathtaking views.

We do not do a regular sit-down breakfast, you will need to prepare yourself. We occasionally sit down together to bacon and eggs on toast, once or twice a month. We never prepare lunch (unless we are hosting one) but the fixings for sandwiches or leftovers are always available - the fridge is always open. We almost always prepare some sort of a dinner; you WILL be called to assist getting dinner ready even if it is only setting the table, or loading the dishwasher. Coffee at the farm is always on and hot!

You need to be able to prepare your own dinner, Cathy doesn't eat at regular times and cooking is not something that she enjoys doing regularly. Standing at a stove is not what she likes to do in her retirement.

Will pick you up in Peterborough or you can use your own car.

    Algo mais...

This is a pretty rural area with a lot of forest and wildlife. We live close to the provincial park so you could go on amazing hikes or spend some time taking some breathtaking photographs.

A little bit about our farm -

Cathy is an active young senior, who is retired. Cathy has been running the farm for 22 years after leaving the city life. She has had horses most of her life, she has been riding just up until this year. She loves the peace and quiet, with the beauty that the valley offers. Cathy loves to share ideas, tells a good story, loves to laugh and spending time with good friends and her family. There is no task on the farm that she will not do, she will not ask you to do more than she will do herself. Cathy has two grown daughters, and several mid-twenties grandchild that visit often making the farm a big family gathering. Everyone pitches in at the farm, making it a fun place to be.

Cathy prefers to host only one workaway person at a time at the farm.

Cathy loves to learn of new cultures, different countries and learning things from her interns.

Key attributes: no problem if you are a smoker, we are also do not mind if you smoke cannabis; you do not need to be a morning person, and its fine if you are a night owl; not shy; inquisitive; ready help where needed. Prefer that you leave your mobile phone in your space while working with the horses, so that your focus is on them.

This is not day after day of heavy manual labor but you must be capable of some sustained physical effort; there are things to be moved, barns to be organized, stairs to climb, or feed to be carried, and put away. We would never ask you to work longer than we would, and we do love to break for the afternoon, a rest with a beverage and take the occasional nap. You will have spare time to enjoy all the valley has to offer, most activities are just a few miles away.

We want you to act like a family member in most respects, make this your home and actively embrace your share of the mundane household tasks. There are always small tasks, like dish-washing, cleaning of toilets or vacuuming a carpet.

You recognize that you are here to learn from us as well as share your skills. Part of that is managing the barn work, or tasks self managed. Yes, you can have a fantastic experience here and a time totally different from the rest of your life but please remember that we are not offering you a vacation retreat, the farm requires work assistance. The farm is a pretty relaxed setting, can be somewhat chaotic or extremely quiet, you will need to be able to work at your own pace.

The only equipment/clothing you will need is your work wear, dress appropriately for the season, wear stuff you do not mind getting soiled and stained. A good pair of boots will be an asset.

Come and be part of the farm! We look forward to having you.
