I helped out with gardening/weeding/pruning, house cleaning, cooking. Truly the work felt like nothing, especially because it was flexible, I could start in the early hours and Lynn 100% makes sure you don't slave away. You will receive ample time to explore Rotorua. We also had nice meals, we did games and enjoyed watching the Te Matatini Maori Arts festival on television together. It was also amazing to experience Lynn's ability to be out and about, meet her friends, and still be so clear and present at her age, you will certainly enjoy this!
Also I had my own room and shower upstairs, which was great as well (just don't get freaked out by all the wood creaking of the house at night:)
So thank you dear Lynn for all your generosity and for hosting me so lovingly!

I must warn you: if you go to Lyn's as a volunteer, it will be very hard to leave. The work I did there didn’t feel like work at all—it was like living everyday life at home: weeding, planting, baking cakes, cooking meals, helping with shopping, and tidying the house. While being there, you feel like you could never give as much as you receive.
Thank you, Lyn, for driving me to different places around Rotorua, recommending where to go, and even gifting me a ticket to the kapa haka concert and for taking me along to Grandparents' Day at school. That was an unforgettable experience. Most of all, I loved our board game nights, singing Christmas songs together, and the wine evening with you and your lovely daughter.
A little tip for other Workawayers: if Lyn can’t host you, her daughter is also a Workaway host, and she’s just as wonderful as Lyn.
And thank you Lyn for being so patient with me my not-so-good English.

Nowhere have I felt this genuinely welcome, so effortlessly accepted with all my quirks and needs and lovingly cared for, as I did staying with Lyn and her great niece, Nienke.

… read more were were so many positives, that I could easily write an essay, but the one thing that really stood out for me above all else was how I was treated like a family member right from the moment I arrived, and just how much it allowed me to relax, let my barriers down, and feel like I was just *home*, even if just for a little while. The ladies simply looked out for me, from offering a lift back home late at night, through patiently providing the sensible perspective on some of my more crazy ideas, to providing emotional support and a listening ear when I missed home. Suffice to say that I can only think of Lyn now as my Adpoted Dutch Grandmother (though she is actually a New Zealander!)
Lyn's property is just idyllic - located in a stunning location on the edge of a golf course, very close to the Redwoods and within easy walking distance into town centre. It's so peaceful and quiet there - I will never forget the sound of running water and the windchimes that accompanied the meals I had on the patio outside. The house itself is... 'loveable' is the main word that I want to use; largely wooden and happily 'chattering' at you with various little creaks and groans. It's very comfortable and plenty warm, with a reassuring collection of knick-knacks and mementos.
The work I did was varied, satisfying and more than fair: I did some vacuuming, cleaning, polishing furniture, cleaning the car, etc. I was delighted to show my gratitude a little by cooking and baking for Lyn from time to time, and between the three of us, there was a great variety of healthy, delicious meals at all times. I was also able to 'stack' my hours, to create some full free days, which worked fantasctically well for me, both forcing me to take a break from exploring on rainy days, and have the freedom to go 'full throttle' on other days and do some longer hikes.
I also really enjoyed the 'cultural exchange' aspect of my stay - Lyn (and Nienke!) were wonderful conversationalists, full of fascinating family histories, thought-provoking life plans and genuine curiosity for who I was, where I was from, and the stories I had. Coming from Europe, the numerous Dutch accents throughout the house were weirdly re-assuring (and I'd never even been to Holland!), perhaps because they meant that they understood very well what it's like sharing a life between two cultures/locations and the pining for the little things that remind you of home.
Personally, I think every city/town in New Zealand should have a Lyn, as one is surely not enough for such a big country - I wish I could take her warmth, generosity, fascinating stories and helpfullness with me wherever I go. I desperately hope to return again later in my travels - it was the sort of experience that justifies visiting time and again, just for a sake of seeing (I hope) an old friend.Só é possível entrar em contato com Workawayers com assinaturas ativas.

He arrived from Italy and set himself up with a bank acount and IRD number so that he could stay in this country on his work visa for a year. I spent 3 weeks at her place, but it felt like just a couple of days. She always notices and praises the tasks you've carried out around the house, which values the effort you've put into them. She's truly interested in knowing who you are, where you come from, what stories you're bringing along (and what kind of food you're capable of cooking too!!! - we prepared a delicious "Ragù" sauce together once). She always goes all out to carry you around if you need or to help you in any other possible way. It doesn't feel like you're "working for her", it feels more like you're thanking her.
I had a wonderful time, Lynette, and it was sad leaving you. I'll remember of my New Zealander Oma.
