I have been with workaway for some years now and have had good help from my choices. Sometimes tho I get an amazing couple who fit in to my needs in all ways. Pierre Luc and Melanie I can say we're exceptional. They became part of my family and whatever they touched or helped on seemed to magically change my place. If it was gardening, gathering
… read more firewood, helping in my garden or any of those tasks one has to keep the place tidy and well kept. It was a pleasure to share my home and life style with this couple and they understood my need for privacy instinctively. They are a mature, intelligent and hard working couple and come with my heartfelt recommendation.
Our experience with Russell has been amazing. We stayed with him from October to November 2022, 2 weeks in January and 1 week in july 2023.
He is really a nice host and he shared a lot with us about New Zealand, his life and all his travels.
We really felt at home with him, and that's why we came back several times. He is like a grand father to us

Regarding the works that we have done for him, they have been very diverse. From wood works ( cutting wood for winter in his forest ), cleaning and waterproofing this roofs (multiple habitations in the propriety) and deck, fixing a water heater, helping him to fix a boat engine, gardening, sorting a lot of material stored since ages, and lot of other little jobs. It has been a great experience, and we learnt a lot by working with him.
In the same time, we have built our campervan, and we can say that it would have been almost impossible to do it without all the tools that Russell lent us. What's more, all his advices made us gain some precious time !
We are really gratefull to have met this amazing person for our first workaway ! Our experience in New Zealand would not have been the same without this encounter.

An absolutely wonderful workaway! From the first day to the last Russell was kind and considerate. The work was varied and interesting, the cabin is a self contained little home which is perfect, and the location is stunning. … read more The work was fair - a few hours cutting fire wood, cleaning, gardening and projects around the house- and we learned so much about living off grid as Russell is a great teacher. Russell went out of his way to ensure that we were enjoying our stay and took us fishing and to see his tall ship. He didn't even make too much fun of Loralee's fear of bugs:) We met some of his family and friends who were all also kind and enjoyable people to spend time with. … read more had listed. Lorelei was busy any time she had spare and managed to complete her assigned tasks with laughter, fun and song. There seemed to be a song or laughter coming from the 2 girls when they weren't doing lessons. They kept the bug population under control around the place and had no objection to helping with cooking, gardening, and chores to make the family living hum along. There was a commitment with this family to work, to learn, and fit the workaway model with joy, vigour and fun. The caravan they have gives them a good measure of independence and allowed me my privacy.
I give a very strong recommendation to any other workaway hosts who might consider this family. They are excellent helpers and willing and fun to have around. I think the family group suited me admirably.

I stayed at Russel's place for 2 weeks, really not enought to get to explore all the amazing stories and experiences he had to share, from flying on planes, to sailing around the world on a sailing ship, to teather... and who knows what more :D

The work was mostly cleaning the bush taking over the fruit treen, and making firewood... a lot of firewood, but an extremely rewardin result at the end.
Hope you'll get one of those wood splitters for yourself and have some more blisters on your hand :D
