    Greetings,

I offer my home on Workaway primarily to give my mother the opportunity to connect with young people and people from diverse cultures. She loves acquiring new knowledge and then sharing her experiences and anecdotes with her friends and family. It's an opportunity for her to learn and be entertained while I'm not at home.

Currently, I live in Europe for work reasons and have left my mother with my stepson. Our charming house is located in the Saylla neighborhood of Cusco, just 50 minutes from the city center via various public buses.

Our home has space to host one or two enthusiastic Workawayers, but not couples. We are especially interested in hosting people who share our affection for pets, are capable of climbing the mountain each day, and appreciate the beauty of nature. If these qualities resonate with you, you could be the perfect fit.

Beyond our cozy house, we have embarked on an exciting project on our captivating mountainous land, which we envisioned as a space dedicated to plant cultivation. Although this dream still has several challenges to overcome, such as installing a watering system for the terraces (still in progress), improving stair access (some areas need work), creating a rest area (creatively using materials found on the land or bought locally), and setting up a small kitchen (as an extension of the small house), along with other suggestions from our volunteers (see list at the end). However, thanks to your help, this dream is starting to materialize. The location of this land is particularly convenient, just a 20-minute walk from the house. To give you an idea of what to expect, I’ve included some photos showing the stunning views.

For larger projects, I may contact local "maestros" who specialize in carpentry, plumbing, or similar fields. They have the tools and materials needed to assist with tasks, and there might be times when I’ll ask for their help on specific days, depending on the work you’ve chosen to support.

Important Guidelines Regarding Meals and House Maintenance:

    - The food provided includes breakfast and lunch on workdays. On non-workdays, meals are your responsibility. However, my mom is very generous and often disregards this rule. Please, if you are home on your days off, collaborate by helping cook or offering to assist with other household tasks. There’s nothing more discouraging than seeing others not doing anything while someone is working on meals for everyone.

    - The volunteer kitchen has a refrigerator for your food. If it’s dirty, please clean it. I recommend going to the market with my mom once a week to bring back both the food she will cook and your own groceries. Prices at the market can vary based on who’s buying. If you go alone, you might get charged a foreigner's price, but with my mom, you'll get a fair price.

    - On Thursdays, the garbage is collected early (6 am). Please help Cesar with this and ensure that food bags are not left accessible to Negra and Blanca, as they are street dogs and will eat the garbage.

    Daily Responsibilities:

    - Walk Cocos: Take him for a morning walk on his leash before breakfast. If he poops outside, there's no need to clean it up since it's a very unkempt area. The other two dogs, Blanca and Negra, should be let out early and will return on their own. However, they need to be brought inside at night to sleep to avoid making noise and potentially being poisoned by neighbors. Keep a close eye on Cocos, especially when there are many people in the house. Frequent opening and closing of doors can make it easy to lose sight of him. It's important to ensure he doesn't try to escape and get lost

-Chickens’ Living Area: Check the cleanliness of the chickens' living area regularly and replace the cardboard every two days.

-Work on the Mountain: Perform your assigned tasks on the mountain.

-Post-Lunch Cleaning: Assist with cleaning large pots after lunch.

-Kitchen Maintenance: Ensure the kitchen is tidy and organized each night, so it’s ready for the next day.

    About Accommodation:

During your stay, you'll enjoy a comfortable sleeping space, with one of the bedrooms featuring its own bathroom. I've upgraded the showers to ensure you have hot water after a day's work. A washing machine is available for use once a week. You will also have access to a private, well-stocked kitchen with essential supplies, allowing you the freedom to prepare your own meals. Additionally, we understand the importance of staying connected, so you'll have internet access throughout your stay.

Important Notes from Our Experience with Volunteers:

From past experience, I’ve learned that clear communication is key to ensuring everything runs smoothly. Here are some important guidelines to keep in mind to avoid misunderstandings and to ensure my mom’s well-being, as well as to make sure everyone enjoys their time:

    - My mother is 74 years old. Although she is still very active, heavy activities are no longer good for her health. Tasks such as going to the market and carrying things home, washing heavy pots, drying and putting away pots, among other similar tasks, require physical effort by contracting her abdomen. She has had colon surgery, and her core must be weakened. Please keep this in mind and avoid tasks that could strain her. I recommend going to the market with my mother once a week so you can bring back food for her to cook as well as for your own use. In the market, prices vary depending on who’s buying. If you go alone, you might be charged a foreigner's price, but with my mother, you’ll get a fair price!

    - Simple daily tasks, such as keeping the shared areas and kitchen table clean, and putting plates and cutlery back in their place, are very important. These small efforts make a huge difference and motivate a person to work in the kitchen. She cannot be both cooking and cleaning; these are tasks that we all manage in our own homes.

    - Always keep an eye on the animals' dishes to ensure they are clean and that their water containers are filled.

    To Consider:

An important aspect of your stay is sharing something from your own culture or place of origin. For example, my mom now makes Limoncello, a recipe an Italian volunteer once taught her. Additionally, during her visit to Germany, she learned to knit beautiful socks. I would love for you to contribute in a similar way by sharing a tradition, recipe, or skill from your home. Your unique contributions will enrich her experience and create a meaningful exchange.

It’s also important to share occasionally. There have been situations where volunteers prepared their own meals but did not share anything, even though the aroma of their food lingered. My mother is very generous and will share even a single cookie if it’s the only one available, so this kind of behavior can be discouraging for her.

If the idea of contributing to our project while enjoying the beauty of nature and animals, and sharing joyfully with my mom, appeals to you, I eagerly await your response. Please feel free to contact us with any questions or to express your interest. We are committed to making your Workaway experience both rewarding and memorable.

    Sincerely,

    Roxana

Travelers can really make the most of their time in Cusco during afternoons and days off. Cusco is a captivating destination that offers a host of activities and attractions.

The neighborhood is quiet and provides a peaceful environment for your stay. However, it is advisable to return home early as transport options are limited after 10pm. Additionally, the surrounding area tends to be dimly lit at night, which can affect visibility and safety.

Additionally, we are excited to help you hone your Spanish language skills. We are also a source of recommendations that we share about must-see places in Cusco and its surroundings. Sometimes Cesar accompanies volunteers to places that are not on any travel list, I recommend asking him. To complement the experience, my sister participates in healing holistic treatments, I also recommend asking her. I trust that all of this will contribute to a holistic and enriching stay.

Please, the following list was put together by Max and Lara, a couple who have stolen our hearts. The idea is for each volunteer to choose a task from the list and write to us indicating which one they would be interested in collaborating on.

SMALL PROJECTS (3-5 days, no experience required):

    1. Team up with Cesar to finish the wood next to the stairs. This involves reinforcing and, more importantly, protecting the wood from rain and sun damage. Otherwise, it will need to be redone within a year. Sand the wood to remove splinters and apply a protective coat of paint or other suitable finish.

    2. Leveling the top terrace. Ensure that Cesar inspects the walls, as there may be excess ground on the terrace. It may be necessary to raise the walls slightly.

    3. Clearing all unwanted green plants and burning them. Once the upper terrace is leveled, planting flowers can commence.

    4. Removing all garbage from the area.

    5. Cleaning and decorating the house to make it suitable for habitation. Professional assistance may be required to access water and power.

    6. General maintenance, including protecting the wood, walls, and roofs from deterioration. Neglecting maintenance for a year will harm the property.

    7. Constructing a table and chairs.

    8. Decorating the walls.

BIGGER PROJECTS (3 weeks or more, requiring specific experience):

    1. Construction of the outdoor kitchen. This entails creating a detailed plan, design, and cost overview. It's advisable to begin with a cement foundation for the floor, which will support the wooden poles for the roof, as well as provisions for water inlet and outlet. Seeking assistance from Workawayers with expertise in this area is recommended.

    2. Building a wooden veranda in front of the house (subject to your approval).

    3. Designing the future look and feel of the property, including drafting drawings and plans.

    PROJECTS IN CASA

    1. Assist with maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen.
    2. Perform general cleaning duties.
    3. Attend to walking, feeding, and grooming the dogs/cats/chickens.

My residence offers two rooms available, one of them with a private bathroom. The other room has a shared bathroom, so great care must be taken to clean it.
Inside the facilities, you will find a spacious and sufficiently equipped kitchen with a small refrigerator.
The living room has a table, chairs and a large sofa.
The garden at my house is really lovely during the day and offers a serene space to sunbathe, wash clothes that dry quickly and enjoy a leisurely breakfast.

    Algo mais...

In their free time, the volunteers can visit many cultural points of the city, my house is near the south valley. There is even a bus that reaches Pisaq in 30 minutes. As other volunteers already did, you can take an agency tour and ask to be picked up near your house (in case the route is to the south). Volunteers can even rent motorcycles to explore the area, some volunteers told me that the prices were affordable.
