Hi everyone! I am Silvia, and my family is looking for someone to engage with us in English/French/Spanish conversation in the house as well as to do some light work in the garden and around the house. My husband, Paolo, and I are both lawyers. We have a 17 year old daughter who is in school studying Human Sciences and a 22 year old son who is a chef, which is quite nice when he has time to prepare something for us! We live in the countryside of Ancona, central Italy, just a 8 min drive from the center of the town. We are not far from a bus stop, but there is a steep 5 minute walk to get to it. We have beautiful mountains and sea nearby!

We would like to improve our English/French/Spanish, so are looking to speak these languages as much as possible in the house, but of course you will hear us speaking Italian with friends and relatives, so you can learn Italian if you would like! We appreciate spending some time together, but we also respect the independence you might need. You can organize your time to find an extra job, if wanted. There is a beatuful coast nearby- you can visit places like Portonovo, Spiaggia due Sorelle, Ancona, Sirolo, Numana, all of which are quite nice to see. We can always discuss and arrange if you want to take a day off to travel around!

We have a little helping around the house to do such as ironing or using the vacuum cleaner (although a big part of it is done by the cleaning lady). We also need some help in the garden outside, so an engagement for more or less 3 hrs/day is expected.

Acomodação
You will have your own bedroom downstairs (you can see it in the photoes), which has a nearby bathroom - the house is big and there is plenty of privacy in the downstairs area. We just expect that the space is kept relatively tidy! I only might need to pick up some books of mine which are in there from time to time, with your permission of course. Normally we eat all together and always appreciate some help to prepare the meals (lunchtime could be sometimes in a rush compared to dinner time). If you have particular cooking abilities we would always be glad to have a try!

There is a lot of flexibility in the work schedule. You could easily organize your time to have mornings off. Ancona has 100,000 inhabitants, so you could find a job, courses, or various activities if you wish. If you have a driver’s license it may be useful to help sometimes.

I spent a wonderful week with Silvia and Paolo (and Thera, the dog!) at their beautiful generous home.
I felt welcome and comfortable at any time and enjoyed a nice room and bathroom to myself.

I stayed with Silvia, Paolo, Linda, and Michele in Ancona for around a month. I feel so lucky to have met them and to have had such an incredible experience for my first workaway and first-time solo traveling. The family was extremely welcoming and made me feel very safe and comfortable from the beginning.

The living accommodations were very… read more comfortable - I had my own room and bathroom which were in a separate downstairs area of the house so it felt like I had a lot of space and privacy. The house itself was lovely and clean. The house was on a property next to Silvia’s parents' house in the countryside. I spent many hours walking around and exploring the areas surrounding their house. The city center of Ancona was around a 30-minute walk from their house (there are some steep hills but very doable in my opinion). The city of Ancona was small but fun to explore and the surrounding hills and sea were stunning!

The work was mainly gardening and some chores in the house - usually Silvia would text me in the morning or tell me the night before a few tasks she wanted me to complete for the day. They have a beautiful garden, so often I helped to fertilize the plants, pull the weeds, or harvest, wash, and prep some vegetables. Sometimes Silvia would ask me to help cook one part of lunch or dinner, such as preparing cabbage from the garden, or occasionally to vacuum or do other random household tasks. Generally, the work was never more than a couple hours a day. Silvia and Paolo both speak English well, but they wanted me there to help them improve their English as well as their kids through having conversations with them at dinner and throughout the day. They also gave me the flexibility to take time off from work and to travel - I was able to spend a night in Bologna and could have travelled more although I was having so much fun at the house I didn’t want to leave :)

Silvia and Paolo went above and beyond to make me feel comfortable and included at all times. On the weekdays they were at work a lot of the day (sometimes they would come home for lunch), but we would always have dinner together and spend time together in the evenings. On the weekends I went along with them as they spent time with their friends, went out to dinner, hiked, and walked on the beach - they made an extra effort to show me around Ancona and the surrounding areas. It was always super fun to spend time with the family; they were warm and generous.

Exchanging recipes and learning about Italian food/cooking and culture were some of my favorite memories with the family. They are incredible cooks!! They were extremely accommodating to me being vegetarian, which I really appreciated.

Because they are in a somewhat chill location, I would say this workaway would be a perfect experience for someone who loves walking around, exploring by themselves, cooking, eating, reading, relaxing, or maybe has some part-time remote work - and not the best for someone looking to meet a lot of young people or party. I loved every second I spent with Silvia and Paolo and can not recommend staying with them enough! Please feel free to contact me if you want any more information!
