A nice place in a rural setting not too far away from Whangarei which is a fairly big city by NZ standards. Being a handyman I did some windows renovation work, sanding and scraping off old paint and I was happy to give a small contribution towards restoring the cottage. The food was healthy and nourishing and I was given coffee and breakfast
… read more articles so I could have my breakfast in the cottage. Internet connection was stronger at the main house (100 meters across the pond) but it also reached the cottage even if the reception was not the best. Lunch and dinner was at the main house. I had my own car and that was a big advantage, especially when one morning without notice was told that I had to leave as they had exchange students on the property and I was not vetted. This could have been a greater inconvenience than it was, but thankfully I had friends in Auckland that I could come and stay with. I would strongly recommend other Workawayers to have a plan B as much as possible as things can change and things do not always work out as one expects.Só é possível entrar em contato com Workawayers com assinaturas ativas.

Dear Bjarne! How can I describe Bjarne? He is a young man not afraid to challenge himself in everything. He is brave- setting out to NZ alone, all the way from Germany, at the age of 18, buying his first car and travelling in it to explore the wilds of the South Island, challenging himself with surfing, and cooking, and meet people and share in
… read more their culture. He is caring and sensitive and a very genuine person. Having arrived at our place in the midst of a family crisis, when we doubted the wisdom of having said yes to a workawayer already, he was not able to have the sort of attention that we would normally be able to give to our workawayers. Despite this he slotted in easily to the family and was very sensitive to our needs, sometimes just for privacy, and was able to continue working by himself after being shown how to do it. He was also happy just finding a corner and working his way through our library and giving the dogs some much-needed attention. He picks up instructions easily, dedicates himself to the task and is excellent at anything requiring maths or computer skills. He is very easy to get along with, loves a good conversation, and has an easy approach to time- not being a slave to it. He has the ability to go with the flow, which was vital for us as our days were constantly changing. Sometimes this meant working for a prolonged period and other times it simply involved waiting or just having extra time off. And he coped with both of these challenges equally well.
He relished the job of cutting of gib board at weird angles and it was interesting to see him practically apply his maths skills to problem solving. He did a beautiful job of sanding the plaster too- although I think as a hammer-hand a little more practise will definitely be beneficiail :) . A part of you will always be enshrined on our property now and I hope the building project will inspire you one day to know you can DIY your own abode.
Bjarne has some serious existing skills in computers and if you need someone to help detangle and simplify your computer- hes the one! And he is honest and trustworthy, a must for something like this. He is also the first person who has been able to explain to me (in my own visual artist language) how the sometimes complex word of computers work. Thank-you Bjarne! You saved my sanity at such a critical time.
In short, I wholeheartedly recommend Bjarne to future hosts and am sure that you wont regret it. He is a very sweet person with a great attitude. You're always welcome to pop by again Bjarne!
cheers! Richard and Hana

I simply could not have asked for a better first-time workaway experience. Staying at Hana & Richard's place for around five weeks was nothing short of an amazing once in a lifetime experience. From the very beginning I felt like I was part of the family and was treated with wholehearted kindness and respect.
Working with Hana was an absolute
… read more pleasure, I was assigned mostly gardening and building related work (insulating, putting up gib walls, sanding) that was easily manageable and made use of my existing skill set as well as teaching me new ones. I spent many days just sitting on the deck and looking out on the pond, enjoying the magnificent atmosphere of the beautiful surroundings. It was sometimes really hard to leave this place and explore Whangarei and everything else around as it was so stressfree and relaxing. You can even kayak on the pond, a really peaceful experience.
I must also thank you for the extra ordinary help you offered me. Even before I arrived, I received a lot of help and advice regarding buying my car and my trip planning - something truely unmatched! I am also more than grateful that even though I already left their place, they drove five hours to fetch me from the hospital after an accident, without considering/asking for other options - I really don't know what I would have done without you.
Also, many greetings to everyone else around, it was lovely to stay in your company! And Banjo, Finn and Frankie, you are some of the cutest dogs I've ever encountered. Britta and Inga! How can I describe the wonderful aura you brought with you to our home? Inga your giggle ( and hearty laugh) rang throughout the day and brought a lightness to every job, (you even got Richards jokes!) and Britta your quiet peaceful glow was lovely to work with. You two are an inspiration to know, your caring for each other and the world and authenticity, and your courage in facing the challenges in life will take you both far. Thank-you so much for your dedication to the job, carting and chipping endless bricks and laying them with care and precision. I also really appreciated that you gave considered and thoughful feedback in the creative process when trying to find solutions to difficult design challenges. You were a valuable part of the creation of the beautiful floor and pathway of the pondhouse and every time we walk on it or simply sit there, we think of you both. RI
Richard speaks of you often and calls you his daughters- even though you are not kids anymore. Know that our home is always open to you and we hope to see you again before you leave. We whole-heartedly recommend Britta and Inga to any host. Treat them well, they are gems.

So beautiful and unforgettable
We were fortunate to be able to work and live with Hana and Richard for two weeks and can say it was a great experience and we had a very nice time with them. From the beginning we felt very comfortable and at home.
We worked almost exclusively with Hana and were able to learn a lot from her. It was nice to see the
… read more dedication and calmness with which Hanna works. It was particularly fascinating how she incorporated nature's guidelines into her creative process. In addition to work, there was always time for great conversations.
Even though Richard was working during the day, we still had a lot of contact with him. When he came back, he took a lot of time for us and helped us where he could. Be it for cooking, looking for our campervan or just nice conversations.
It was very important to both of them that we also see something of the surroundings in addition to the work. They gave us great tips and even took us to different hikes. Furthermore, we were able to learn a lot about the country, life and people in New Zealand through them.
We also had the chance to get to know the two daughters and the son of Hana and Richard. We had nice conversations with them and got good tips from them for our further journey.
Not to forget, of course, the three dogs. As different as they are, each one is great in its own right. You just have to like those three.
Thank you for the great time and your trust. We will think back to you often and with pleasure and hope that we will see you again.Só é possível entrar em contato com Workawayers com assinaturas ativas.

Hana & Richard were our very first workaway experience and we couldn't have hoped for a better place to start our NZ journey!
They are both some of the kindest people we've ever met and they truly invited us in their home as part of their family.

Hana is an artist and an extremely creative person. She has a vision for her home and will bring everyone in to help make it come true. Be prepared for a two hour tour of the property on your arrival, during which she'll explain everything she has in mind! That tour itself is a true journey! Hana is a great person to talk to, she knows a lot about many things and is very open-minded, so you feel like you can discuss anything with her. Also, she taught me how to sow so that I could sow the curtains of our van, and that was awesome!
We also had the opportunity to befriend their son Tal and his fiancée Nathália, who live across the pond. They are both very kind and cool people too, and every minute spent with them, either camping, visiting gardens, having a drink or just chilling, was an amazing time.
Tal and Richard helped us a lot as we were looking to buy a van, they came with us, drove us there and once the van was bought, they helped us equipping it a bit more so that we had a proper house on wheel by the time we left them.
We cannot recommend the family strongly enough to anyone in search of a family away from home in NZ.
Thank you again, so much, for your help in everything, for welcoming us into your family, and for being just who you are.
All the very best. Can't wait to meet again!

Hana and Richard,
I was so lucky to do my first workaway in your home. With you, we felt like home, in a safe place with lovely people. I enjoyed each moments spend with you, in the garden with Hana, on the kitchen and on the road with Richard. I learnd so much with you, in work but in relationship too. Hana is soemone who loves working on her

She is passionate by all arts (poterie, jewellery, singing, architecture...) but she is especially passionate by the plants. Every kinds of flowers and plants has something special for Hana. When I worked with her, she was really kind and she explained well all the works. If we are not confortable with a work, she'll find others things, as she says "there are thousands of works to do". She is always smiling, has stories to tell, love to share. Richard and Hana, both of them are like that. We saw Richard during his days off and when he finished the work. When he came back home, he helps on the garden too, or he starts the kitchen. He is a real chef ! I learnd the Richard's salad, I can't say the secret you can only learn with him but it's a treat. He did a lot of beautiful boards in woods too, and he is a really good trompetist ! He speaks french a little bit, and as a french people who arrived in a first time on a family, showing interst for my langage it's really interesting and easy for sharing a lot. Also, he is great guide, we saw amazing places with him, and he cans tell us more about those places on history and geography. Hana and Richard have a lot of knowledges about culture and history, it's a great experience if you want to learn on those subjects ! I shared the kiddush with them, it's a juwish celebration, it was beautiful moments of sharing, hapiness and love. We celebrated my 21th birthday together, I'll never forget it. It was on of my best birthday, with amazing people. I met two of their children, who are so nice and welcoming too. Tal and Natalia who lived next to Hana's and Richard's home are sweets people, reals fightors, and I wish them all the best for the future. I recommend them for a workaway, for a first workaway at 1000%. If you don't really know how can it's work and if workaway is for you, Hana and Richard are the most beautiful proof of humanity and welcoming to experiment that.Só é possível entrar em contato com Workawayers com assinaturas ativas.

Dear Elise! Elise is such a sweet girl. She managed to quietly ingrain herself into the household in the 3 weeks she was with us, so much so that the household went to rack and ruin when she left! I really loved the cultural exchange, they welcome you as you are a part of their family and you didn't feel excluded at all. I learned a lot about birds, kiwi's people, plant and the jewish culture. But they are really open-minded and you can talk of everything with them.

In their spare time they also got to hike, climb mountains, see waterfalls, kayak on our pond, enjoy the prolific birdlife and hang out with the dogs. We gave them tips on how to explore Northland and helped them buy a car when they realised that we weren't joking about the lack of public transport in our area! I enjoyed my time with Richard, Hana, and their four-legged furballs. I spent the time painting the kitchen of one of their rental properties. In the initial discussions it was agreed being flexible was necessary. As a bush pilot, I am used to the requirement to be flexible to changing conditions such as weather, passengers changed to freight

I'm sorry Michel, i forgot to leave feedback for you, and time has raced by so quickly that I have forgotten some of the details already.. so I think you and Amy were with us for about 2 weeks? I was hoping to give him a chance to do a wonderful art piece in the cottage, but life intervened and gave us an urgent drainage job. So Michel dug a ditch and shlepped drainage metal to fill it like a trooper! He is very even tempered, nothing fazes him and he really thinks. We had some lovely (and lively!) conversations and he has a quirky sense of humor and a genuine curiosity about life. I think you will make an amazing Dad, Michel! Amy is lucky to have you. I hope everything goes smoothly with baby. Good luck!

I enjoy painting, also it's something I can easily do, even though I broke my collarbone during winter here. Luckily for me, here it tons of painting work :) But Hana taught me a lot about preparation, which is really important for any older surface and you can make it looks almost like brand new! Otherwise she is awesome artist with lot of knowledge of different kind of techniques. Richard loves history and he's always happy to share his own life stories. How I already said - they're really nice and generous people with big good hearts!!! :)
I can't forget about the three happy dogs here, who would play with you all day long! Although I'm not (at least I wasn't before) a fan of small dogs, the cutest one is chihuahua Finn, who I cuddle with during a night (when I miss my boyfriend, who is in Australia).

… read more only when he thinks his English is not good enough- but he can hold a great conversation and advanced hugely in his time wth us. When our house was like a railway station with our adult children coming and going while on holiday he took it all in his stride. When our plans changed before we could take him, we found him a place with our friends, who didnt want to let him go! So this review is in fact for two households. They had 2 young children who just loved him and he just slotted into the household and became indispensable in the space of a week. Pascal doesnt give himself enough credit. He is very brave. After a long career in appliance repair he decided there was more to life and has set out into the world to learn, experience different lifestyles and give of his skills. He has courage, is flexible, curious to learn new things, and is very sweet. When Pascal and I worked on creating a rock step that turned out to be a 3d Tetris puzzle, I realised I was wasting his talents. When given the job off getting an old washing machine reconditioned, cleaned up and with a new door seal he got the job done very quickly, independently and with no problem at all. Thankyou ! It is fabulous to finally have it going. Pascal also solved a tricky heating problem that had been waiting years for a solution, and created a plan for the electrician in an upcoming project. He really knows his stuff with electrical jobs and I am sure will be a valuable team member in many workaway projects. Pascal got on well with our adult children, accomodating their need also for sibling time, and fell in love with our dogs.. We are very sorry to see Pascal go, but understand his desire to volunteer in a forest project to try to offset his carbon emissions in getting to NZ. We wish you all the best and know that you take with you may great memories of beautiful places and experiences. Remember our house is always open to you Pascal- please drop in again before you head South, adn stay in touch via Whats App! I am keen to hear where life takes you. Anyone who hosts Pascal is lucky.

Immersion in a Kiwi family full of life with Hana, Richard, Kiri, Ayal, Tal...and some guests!

Dear Camille and Solenn, You are both such a lovely (and lively!) couple. We have loved your easygoing, open, friendly, caring natures and your mature approach to work. You have been a pleasure to host and we hope you come back again before you leave, to properly explore the stunning North now that you have your car. Our time was simply too short

I so much appreciated your help in moving rocks (Camille is very strong!) and gravel and digging and laying paths. Both of you balance each other out very well and your cooking was absolutely delicious. Solenns English improved hugely during their stay as we talked and worked. You also provided a great cultural experience for our daughter and her boyfriend. We miss you already and so do the dogs! We highly recommend them to anyone who is thinking of hosting them.

I spent two extraordinary weeks at Richard and Hana's house. Their charming property is located in the countryside near the town of Whangarei and there is so much to do and discover in this beautiful region of the Northland!

Jonathan arrived while my husband was away so I asked for references from his previous places. They came bak glowing and said I was lucky to have him. I totally agree. I was in the midst of a whirlwind of activity of renovation whilst sending one daughter off overseas and the other back to Uni, and he slotted in straight away, being sensitive

Upon returning from the airport it was full on for the both of us stripping wallpaper and painting, with the crazy deadline of my husand arriving home in a couple of days! Jonathan was simply amazing, Although I told him that he didnt have to work any more than his allotted hours, he threw himself into the project wholeheartedly working alongside me (his own choice) until we both dropped. Thank God he loves exploring ideas and so with good conversation the hours simply flew! It certainly made it a fun experience- along with developing special paint effects for a truly gorgeous wall. Jonathan just loves getting stuck into a project and works equally well unsupervised. He loves being outside in the garden and I'm just sorry that I didnt manage to find all the materials yet for the planned major landscaping part of the pond and garden, as I know you really would have loved to be a part of that too. Jonathan was originially planning to come for only a short while but ended up being here for a month or so, and is totally trustworthy and willing to turn his hand to anything. Our dogs all adopted him and have pinned for him since he left. I highly recommend him to anyone considering whether to take him or not, you wont be sorry. Jonathan is mature beyond his years and a deep thinker and loves exploring different cultures. He is very social, but also is comfortable with his own company so understands how to allow space simply to be. He became truly a part of our family. I hope you stay in contact and we see you again someday here. Good luck with the next stage in your life Jonathan!! You will be a very successful physio I'm sure as you certainly know how to listen- and question. Enjoy Portugal!

This is a very special place and I'm going to miss all of it.
The project is simply amazing and it was awesome being part of something like this.
There is just so much to learn and to discover. Every aspect in this big project of renovation has its one little story.
So I'm not telling more because I don't want to spoil anything for you .......
During my 4 weeks here I did all different kinds of jobs:
Floor filling
Gardening
Painting
As well as all kinds of other tasks
Richard and Hannah are two of the nicest people I have ever met.
They didn't just take me in as a work-awayer, they let me become part of their project and home.
They are very open-minded people who are always interested in all kinds of conversations and discussions about simply everything.
They also always made sure that I had enough free time to go out and discover the area.
Overall I can only say that this is a truly special place with an awesome project and absolutely lovely people.

Dear Sophie, what can I say? Sophie undersells herself. It was not until Sophie arrived that we discovered that not only does she play the piano beautifully, but she is a master harpist! If at all possible future hosts, please help her find a harp wherever she is in the world as the magic in her fingers is a true gift. She can play both lever and pedal harps. (But Sophie would not want to miss out on a cultural exchange if you cant find one!)
Apart from her music, Sophie worked with a will, noticed where her help was needed, and quietly and efficiently filled the gap. She was the perfect helper for someone with a lot to organize as she was able to work independently, helping me organize a dinner for 40, lay out out landscaping, move rocks and paint. She is intelligent, can hold a good conversation, is well-travelled, strong, brave, practical, unpretentious and loves animals. Sophie prefers to listen rather than talk, and has a real desire to experience other cultures and lifestyles. She shared with us an thought-provoking free doco called Humans, on Youtube (by Yann Arthus Bertrand) promoting understanding between humans of every race and culture. (Watch it if you can). This is the sort of cultural exchange that enriches both sides and I thank you so much for that Sophie! Yet another treasure you left with us. She fitted in perfectly to the family when our older children returned home partway through her 3 weeks, and loved spending time with our three dogs. She also enjoyed exploring the area when possible. Sophie, I truly hope that you do come back to New Zealand one day for a proper exploration of our fabulous country. Just let us know when, our door is always open to you. Safe travels!
