Experience Alsace with our Icelandic–Polish family near Strasbourg
Hi! We are Felix and Sylwia, an Icelandic–Polish couple living in Alsace, just outside Strasbourg in eastern France.
Our home is a mixture of cultures, languages, dogs, ideas, everyday life and usually more things going on than there are hours in the day.
Felix is Icelandic and Sylwia is Polish, and France has become our home. Between us, we speak Icelandic, English, French, Polish and Spanish, so international visitors fit quite naturally into our household.
What attracts us to Workaway is the opportunity to welcome people from other countries into our home, spend some time together, exchange cultures and languages, and learn about how other people live.
We would love to hear about your country, traditions, food, travels and experiences. If you enjoy cooking, perhaps we can prepare something from your country together. If you speak a language we don't know, teach us a few words. We enjoy meeting people with different backgrounds and perspectives and sharing our own Icelandic, Polish and French experiences in return.
Felix has a significant physical disability and has been through many years of medical treatment. This affects how we divide everyday activities at home, and it is one reason we appreciate having another person around to share normal household, garden and dog-related activities with us.
We are not looking for a servant, nurse, carer or employee. We are looking for friendly, independent people who would enjoy becoming part of our household for a while and sharing both everyday activities and cultural experiences with us.
Sharing everyday life and activities
We see Workaway as sharing everyday life rather than giving someone a list of jobs to complete.
What we do together will depend on the season, the weather and what is happening at the time.
Typical activities might include:
* gardening, weeding and light pruning
* planting and caring for outdoor areas
* tidying parts of the garden
* organising things around the house
* occasional cleaning and normal household activities
* preparing meals together
* walking, playing with and helping care for our dogs
* helping with small everyday tasks around the home
We like the idea of working together, talking while we do things and learning from each other. You may know a better way to grow something, organise something or prepare a meal, and we may have something useful to share with you too.
You do not need specialist skills. Enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to participate matter much more.
We generally follow the normal Workaway rhythm of around 4–5 hours of shared activities on five days, while remaining flexible so that you have plenty of time to explore the region and enjoy your stay.
This is a private household exchange. Workawayers will not be asked to work for either of our businesses.
We are happy to welcome solo travellers of any gender as well as couples.
Couples are very welcome, and our large private guest suite is particularly comfortable for two people.
The best match may depend on the activities we share during a particular stay, so we will always talk openly about what we have in mind before agreeing on a visit.
Our dogs
We share our home with three dogs, including a Giant Schnauzer and a Jack Russell, so being genuinely comfortable around dogs is important.
They are part of our everyday family life and live with us in the house.
If you are a dog person, you will probably consider this one of the advantages of staying here!
Walking them, playing with them or occasionally helping with their normal routine may be part of everyday life during your stay.
Cultural exchange
Cultural exchange is one of the main reasons we are interested in hosting.
Staying with us means experiencing a slightly unusual combination of Icelandic, Polish and French life under one roof.
We can share Icelandic and Polish culture, food, traditions and stories, as well as our experience of leaving our home countries and building a life in France.
With Icelandic, English, French, Polish and Spanish spoken between us, there are also plenty of opportunities for language exchange.
But we are just as interested in learning from you.
We would love to hear about where you come from, what everyday life is like there, what you eat, what traditions matter to you, where you have travelled and what you have learned along the way.
If you like cooking, we would enjoy occasionally cooking together and discovering something from your country. If you have a hobby, skill or interest you enjoy sharing, we would be interested in learning about that too.
We expect to share meals regularly, spend time talking together, sometimes cook together, walk the dogs together or show you some of the places we enjoy in Alsace.
At the same time, we also value independence.
We don't expect either side to spend every evening together. Sometimes we may sit around the table talking for hours; other times everyone may want some quiet time.
For us, a good exchange includes both.
Where we live
We live in Alsace, close to Strasbourg and the German border, in one of those unusual parts of Europe where several countries and cultures are within easy reach.
Strasbourg itself has its historic centre, canals, restaurants, cafés and European institutions.
Outside the city you can discover Alsatian villages, vineyards and the famous wine route, as well as forests and the Vosges mountains.
Cross the Rhine, and you are in Germany, with the Black Forest and cities such as Freiburg within reach.
Travel south, and Switzerland is also close enough to explore on a day off or during a weekend.
A few weeks staying with us can therefore include experiences in France, Germany and Switzerland rather than only one small corner of one country.
There are also many places nearby for walking, cycling, visiting villages or simply spending time in nature.
We are happy to recommend places, share local knowledge and help you work out what is worth seeing while you are here.
Your accommodation
You will have a spacious 39 m² private guest suite on the second floor of our house.
The suite has:
* a 180 × 200 cm king-size bed
* your own private bathroom
* a separate private toilet
* plenty of personal space
* high-speed Wi-Fi
So although you are staying in our home, you will also have a proper private space where you can close the door, relax and have some independence.
This makes the accommodation particularly comfortable for couples or for anyone staying with us for several weeks.
You will of course also have access to the normal shared areas of the house.
We can discuss food, meals and dietary requirements before your stay so that everyone knows what to expect.
Who would enjoy staying with us?
We think you will probably fit in well here if you are:
* interested in cultural exchange
* friendly and open-minded
* independent but also happy to spend time together
* genuinely comfortable around dogs
* respectful of someone else's home
* reliable about things we have agreed to do
* happy to communicate openly
* curious about other people and cultures
* willing to participate in normal household and garden activities
We don't expect professional productivity or specialist expertise.
The idea is simply to share some everyday activities, help each other and hopefully both come away from the experience having learned something.
Availability
We are creating our Workaway profile before we urgently need someone.
Our intention is to host occasionally, usually for a few weeks at a time, when the timing feels right for both the Workawayer and us.
Felix also has significant medical treatment and surgery ahead, so our availability may sometimes depend on his treatment and recovery.
This does not mean we expect Workawayers to provide medical or personal care.
We will always explain our situation and what everyday life is likely to look like before you decide to come, so there should be no surprises on either side.
If an Icelandic–Polish home in France, three dogs, a comfortable private suite, cultural exchange and the chance to explore France, Germany and Switzerland sounds appealing, send us a message.
Tell us a little about yourself, where you come from, what you enjoy doing and what you would like to experience during your stay.
Maybe we can learn something from each other and have a really enjoyable few weeks together. -

Oportunidades de intercâmbio cultural e aprendizado
Our home offers an unusual mix of Icelandic, Polish and French culture. Felix is Icelandic, Sylwia is Polish, and we have made our home in Alsace, so we naturally have several cultures, languages, and traditions around our table.
Between us we speak Icelandic, English, French, Polish and Spanish, which gives plenty of opportunity for language exchange.
We enjoy sharing food, stories, traditions and our experiences of living in different countries. Travellers can learn about Icelandic and Polish culture while also experiencing everyday life in France and discovering Alsace.
We would like the exchange to go both ways. We are genuinely interested in learning about our visitors' countries, traditions, languages, food and experiences. If you enjoy cooking, we would love to occasionally prepare something from your country together. If you have a language, hobby or skill you enjoy sharing, we would be happy to learn from you.
We expect to share meals regularly, spend time talking together, sometimes cook together, walk the dogs together and, when possible, show visitors some of the places we enjoy in Alsace.
Our location also offers a chance to experience several European cultures during one stay. Strasbourg and the Alsatian wine region are nearby, Germany is just across the Rhine, and Switzerland is within reach for day trips or weekends.
At the same time, we respect everyone's independence. For us, cultural exchange means enjoying genuine time together without expecting either hosts or travellers to entertain one another constantly. -

Ajuda

Depending on the season and what is happening at the time, activities may include gardening, weeding, light pruning, planting, tidying outdoor areas, organising things around the house, occasional cleaning, preparing meals together, walking and playing with our dogs, and helping with other normal household activities.
Sylwia will often take part in these activities alongside you, and Felix participates as his physical abilities allow. We enjoy working together, talking as we go, and exchanging ideas and knowledge.
No specialist skills are required. We are not looking for renovation, construction or skilled trade work. Anything requiring a professional builder, electrician, plumber or other tradesperson will be handled by paid professionals.
We generally follow the normal Workaway rhythm of around 4–5 hours of shared activities on five days, with flexibility so you have plenty of time to explore the region. -

Algo mais...
We are well connected to Strasbourg, so having a car is not necessary for enjoying your free time.
The local train station is about a 15-minute walk from our house. Trains run approximately every 30 minutes on weekdays and every hour at weekends, and the train journey into central Strasbourg takes only around 6 minutes.
Strasbourg is therefore very easy to visit for sightseeing, cafés, restaurants, museums, nightlife or simply wandering around the historic centre.
Our location is also a good base for exploring the wider region. Alsace has beautiful villages, vineyards, the wine route, forests and the Vosges mountains. Germany is just across the Rhine, with places such as the Black Forest and Freiburg within reach, and Switzerland is also possible for longer day trips or weekends away.
We are happy to share recommendations and local knowledge, and when it fits with our own plans we may also visit places together.
There are plenty of opportunities nearby for walking, cycling and enjoying the countryside, while Strasbourg is only a short train ride away whenever you want city life. -

Salomon is the youngest. He's a mix of a giant Schnauzer and a clown. Supposed to be a guard dog, but too friendly to scare anyone.

This is our Yogi. A miniature Schnauzer with a large appetite. He's a mommie's boy and loves all people. Sometimes a bit too much.
