Descrição
We’re Alicia (34 years old from Italy) and Tim (37 years old from Belgium).
We live in Midoes, a village in the central portugal Beiras-region.
Our quinta is situated in a secluded valley, close to the river.
Our dream is to live from all the beautiful things the land has to offer and share it with animals, adults and children who can learn from each other surrounded by nature.

we grow a lot of vegetables, we invited the children of the kinder garden to come and enjoy our quinta and we started to collaborate with social project.. we are a host family for youngest.

We started 2 years ago and October 15th, 2017 a huge fire swept through the valley and we had a big loss.. olives tree, plants, all the conserve and the harvesting, 2 caravans (one was our home), all our tools, books the list goes on.

Luckily all the pet family formed by 3 dogs (Bashir, Adri and Menina), 3 cats (Mum Mila, brother Robin and sister Cleo), one rooster (Luzalto) and 6 chickens (Cesarina, Guendalina, Adelina, Isabella, Esperanza and Piopio) is saved.

Now.. we have to work hard to reviving the quinta again.. we already started to cut death trees, seeding some grass and in spring we would like to have more animals that can help us with the maintaining and the cleaning of the land.

At the same time we have to work hard to build stable, a house and a space to be able to host youngest and helpers.

Another Important job is to plant new trees and restore the garden and greenhouse.

So.. what we really need is some workforce.

We both arrived in Portugal working as volunteers and are happy to be able to offer the same experience to other people now.

What is at the center of our lives is gardening, food, organizing children's activities, photography, knitting, yoga, enjoying the beauty and diversity of nature around us, our animals, , our dreams of the future.
In any regard, we are in general living a simple life while we try to respect everything and everyone around us.

The cultural exchange and the learning opportunities will, according to us, mainly take place in the garden, the kitchen and talking around the table :)

We live close to a magical caminho along the river and 10 minutes walking from the first village.

The beira- region with its terraced valleys has big diversity in landscapes. We are in the granite region, with big stones scattered across fertile valleys, often abandoned and wild, too often planted with eucalyptus, but always with a feel of abundance. Rivers that once cut these valleys out of the landscape flow interrupted by manmade barrages, where the mills used to be grinding. To make a long story short: this region is great for simple pleasures like sunsets and sunrises, long or short walks, slowing down the pace of life, ...

Alice and tim are wonderful and also the animales they have especially Robin (one of the cats). I had a very clear glimpse into their everyday life and gained the two very dearly during this time! I also learned a lot and it was a very good experiance for me.

Our family of 5 loved our time spent with Tim, Alicia and all the pets. They have a beautiful quinta, with plenty of jobs that need doing. Alicia rustled up some amazing homecooked meals and we would definitely recommend them to Workawayers wishing to experience all rural Portugal has to offer.

I contacted them in time of need and they gave me support, despite I've never had a conversation with them on Workaway before. I'm happy that things went in this way, otherwise I've never had the possibility to meet such open, friendly, generous, skilled and bright… read more people.

I stayed at their quinta for ten days, unfortunately, I would have liked to stay more for sure. I've never needed to ask for anything, because they really know how to make you feel comfortable in any context. After few days, at least to me, it was like we always knew each other.
I wanted to try an offgrid experience, and this was the perfect place: spring water, basically all of the food from garden and conserves (olive oil included, and very good!), accomodation in a caravan with stove, really warm room and comfortable bed, electricity and warm water from solar panels and collector. I can guarantee without any doubt that they are exceptional cookers, from breakfast with Tim's amazing pancakes to dinner with Alice's creative and tasty recipes. I also tried some Portuguese traditional dishes always cooked by them.
They are very well integrated in the local community and you can have the possibility to know more on Portuguese culture and people (including but not limited to, after my departure on Sunday they organized a home made tagliatelle lunch, with many invited guests from Midoes and neighborhood). But they are really full of surprises and resources!
The job tasks were varied, that is one of the things that I appreciated the most, so that I could see different aspects of an offgrid living, plus experience and learn new techniques and skills. And for sure if you decided to go to their quinta you will learn a lot on the matter, both from the work and from Alice and Tim's stories and opinions. I've never felt pressure during the work, actually I wanted to do more to help them even better. I spent basically from 8 am to 21 pm with them, and the chats after dinner were the best and funny part of the day.
All their dogs are something I've never seen before: unbelievably smart and communicative. I've finally decided to have a Griffon Bleu de Gascogne if I will ever have an other dog (Sorry dogs, but Maghi is definitely my favourite!)
About the free time, we visited the typical market in Tabua, we had breakfast at the pastelaira more than once, I had a yoga trial in Tabua where Alice is attending her yoga course, I made a walk along the river and with the dogs, and my last day there we went to the Museu of Azeite (olive oil musem) in Oliveira do Hospital, which was a real surprise since ultra modern and minimalist, but really informative and interesting. Hope to not have forgotten anything, the days passed very fast and were busy of activities.
However, to practically pass the great mood and the life style I experienced there, I'm going to make an other example: we were burning some logs and bushes to clear the land, then suddenly << You know what? We can grill some tasty juicy pork for lunch!!!>>. No plans, simple, let it flows.

Hope that this review could convince you to spend some time to Alice and Tim's quinta, because if someone deserves your help they are the right people.

Alicè and Tim hosted us last minute after we lost contact with our other host. We stayed for about 3 weeks in July/Aug 2018. Half of this time another pair of volunteers were there making 6 people staying on the Quinta. This Workaway is great if you are not afraid of some physical but rewarding work in a little piece of paradise. It offers a great… read more opportunity to reconnect with the more simpler rewards of life such as eating fresh food and living in the outdoors.

The Quinta itself is set in a picturesque valley which makes for beautiful sunsets. A tranquil river is about 10 min walk away which was amazing for swimming and relaxing after a hard days work. The Quinta is about 30 mins from the train station so we got a taxi when heading away for our free days. The local village is quaint and has a bakery with the best pastel de natas! (custard tarts). We slept in a tent as the caravan was occupied and were provided with a comfy mattress and bedding. As it was Summer it was too hot to take a siesta in the tent during the day but luckily there is a shaded area with comfy chairs.

Alicè and Tim are a welcoming and down to earth couple. Alicè has a warm and creative spirit. We loved seeing her creative projects and her passion for teaching children and photography is clear to see. Alicé is also an amazing chef and knows how to cook up a tasty feast with the freshest vegetables straight from the Quinta. Tim is a great teacher and is very organised with the tasks on the Quinta. He is generous with his bio farming knowledge and experience. His advice was very helpful to make sure you are working efficiently in order to get the jobs done. We really enjoyed chatting or playing games after a lovely meal with great company. You live closely with the cats and dogs so if you aren’t an animal lover this could be an issue for you! We will miss our furry friends! (Menina’s the best!).

We ate amazing mostly vegetarian dishes together everyday on an outside table overlooking the Quinta. We had 3 large and hot meals per day so you will always have yummy yummy yummy love in your tummy! ;)
We all worked together to feed up to 8 people some days and Alicè is happy for you to get creative in the kitchen with the fresh produce if you wish.

We worked for about 5 hours in the morning mostly. Our tasks included; land clearing, harvesting and weeding. We both really enjoyed learning how to cob the bathroom and found this project rewarding! On Thursday we were happy to help prepare up to 60 pizzas to locals and tourists at a near by camp site. The pizza is the best you will have!!! Tim is a master at the wood fire pizza oven and Alicé shows off their bio vegetables with an authentic Italian flair.

Overall we had a great stay with Alicè, Tim and all the animals! We enjoyed practicing the Quinta way of life even if it was only for a short time! We wish you both all the best with your Quinta and would love to come visit in the future to see how the project grows!
