Descrição
The boat build has begun in Phu My about 50 km southeast of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) in Vietnam. Do you want to come and help build or help film the build and earn your place in one of the many legs of the sailing journey around the world in the first fully electric sailing catamaran and make history? We will be undertaking the Elcano World Challenge which is to sail around the world without the use of fossil fuels in a modern catamaran.
The test sailing will begin now with the actual sailing start being around October or November 2024. Read on if you want to secure your spot on the voyage in 2024....
I have a fully furnished apartment with 2 rooms in Phu My. You also have a bike to cycle around the neighborhood if you would like. Everything is close by including supermarkets, fresh local markets (everyday from 6am), pool and gym and of course everything else Vietnam has to offer - beautiful beaches, cheap shopping, cheap and excellent food.
During sailing we will be using wind, solar and hydro generation. It is not going to be easy. This will be a trip of a lifetime where you will see unspoiled places in the middle of nowhere but there is a catch....I have to be very serious about who comes on board..... You cannot just walk off a boat if you have had enough. So this is why the following message may sound direct and angry and blunt but I have to be because living on a boat with 4 or 5 other people can be a trial. We cannot drop you off just anywhere because we may be in the middle of nowhere, that is, at sea, on a coast with just jungle or a tiny atoll in the middle of nowhere. There are no shops at sea or internet or nice hot showers. If something breaks we have to make do. We are on limited water and electricity consumption, approximately about 1/10th or 1/20th of what you currently use. So you must actually have a sense of adventure rather than think you have one.
During the boat build from now til July 2024, the minimum stay will be 2 weeks but preferably 4 weeks or longer. We will be helping a small amount in building but it is all unskilled work here . The factory guys will do all the skilled work. We will be filming the build and publishing it on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook. If you show yourself to be competent and interesting on camera then you will be asked to join me and a few others in sailing around the world. The people that are really liked by my audience will be allowed to stay as long as they are able. Imagine that, a free trip around the world on a multi - million dollar catamaran for 2 to 3 years. There is no price on that especially as we will be sailing to many places that nobody ever sees - little islands in the middle of nowhere without any footprints at all, coastlines that are so remote that nobody can get there by car or 4wd. We will be filming the whole journey which will take about 2 to 3 years. You do not have to be there for the whole time but minimum stays on the boat are usually 2 to 3 months, the longer the better especially if you are good crew. Preference goes to longer stays provided you pass the early settling in period. We require sailors, video editors, videographers, entertainers and a cook/cleaner. Likely crew number will be 4 to 6 people on the boat at any one time so you won't get lonely. You will all be on film and on YouTube. You have to be ok with that and sign a a document stating so.
Ideally, you will know how to sail. If not, I suggest you join a local sailing club and learn how to do it before your scheduled leg. Usually spring and summer are the best times to learn. Get to it now! Those that can't sail don't immediately disqualify but its best if you can.
Ideally, you will be at least 24 years of age at the end of 2024 preferably older. If you are between 22 and 24 and still want to apply then you must demonstrate an extremely unusual upbringing ie you lived on a boat your whole life or on a farm in the middle of nowhere and you practically ran it by the time you were 16 or you were brought up by sea leopards or wolves. These are the only 3 examples I can think of but there may be more. The point is that I need dependable people with experience and who have common sense.
You will be fit, athletic and spry. You will not be a prince or princess. You will be a doer and won't need to be chased around to complete a task. You will be sociable. You will be able to be woken up at all hours and function. This is usually a fixed time when you have your night watch but if there is an emergency then all hands are on deck period. If you need 30 minutes to wake up then this is not good. 30 seconds is more appropriate. 3 seconds is best. You will not be a fussy eater. Standard food is oats, hummus, lentils, fish, rice, pasta, vegetables when we can get them and fruit when we can get it. There may be meat on occasions. I understand there are a lot of vegans around but this is not the trip for you. We will be eating fish when we catch it and we don't have the room to fulfill your diet. We must supplement it with fish. SO YOU MUST ALL EAT FISH AND SEAFOOD. NO VEGANS ARE TO APPLY
If you can freedive, spearfish, fish, paraglide, kitesurf, wing foil, rock-climb, play guitar, juggle, firewalk (just kidding but if you can then why not), do yoga, or have some talent put it in the application. If you are a YouTuber or Instagrammer then I am happy to help promote your channel provided all my YouTube and social media is completed.
Seasickness. Ideally in the past you will have been at sea for more than 3 days so you ought to know. Most people get seasick but are fine 2 or 3 days later. Be honest in the application. If you don't know you might want to get on a boat before you do a passage with me and find out the hard way. It is worth it. A very small proportion of people never get over seasickness so it is best not to find out on a passage.
If you are a person that plays on their phone all day then this trip is NOT for you.
if you cannot follow directions then this trip is not for you.
If you have every been accused of being a narcissist, a sociopath or psychopath, or haven't had a good friend for more than 3 years then please don't apply. I had one sociopath on the boat recently and we are still trying to dispose of the body... That's a joke people...(or is it 😉)
Believe it or not I am easy to get along with but I have been doing this a long time and know the problems. Good luck.
During the boat build obviously there is internet available. During sailing or in the middle of nowhere there is very limited internet reserved for emails to family and close friends to let them know you are ok.
IF YOU DON'T PUT THE WORD "ORANGE" INTO THE FIRST LINE OF YOUR APPLICATION THEN I KNOW YOU HAVEN'T READ EVERYTHING AND YOUR APPLICATION WILL BE DELETED. Sorry but I get about 5 vegan applications per week still. Maybe they don't have enough strength to read until the end....I don't know.
A TYPICAL APPLICATION IS LIKE THE FOLLOWING:
******
NAME John Blah or Susie Dahh
Age: 24, 28, 35 etc
I am German, French, Colombian etc ...and I grew up on a farm etc OR I am a city kid
Sailing experience: I have raced boats since..... (size/type) OR I just joined my local club and am sailing Lasers OR I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT SAILING
Seasickness. I have been at sea and get seasick for the first 2 days and then I am fine. OR While seasick I have to lie down and can't help OR I can still function, I just feel lousy...OR I DON'T KNOW WHETHER I GET SEA SICK OR NOT
Talent: play guitar, eat fire...
Video edit: I can video edit and I use Premier Pro or Final cut etc...here are some links to my work. I have my own computer, drone etc
Videographer: I have made videos for 5 years. Here are some links to my work. I haver my own computer, drone etc
I understand that I must travel light. Only 1 backpack plus my guitar, harp (well maybe not)
I am sociable and don't mind being filmed and being on YouTube.
I am a comedian. I have a dry sense of humor. I have no humor at all.
I am a night person. I am a day person.
I can cook. I cannot cook.
I am not a fan of sociopaths either.
That's about it. This will be the best Workaway experience that you can ever have but it isn't for everybody....It will be full of adventure, danger and wonder. I don't think you will die but you may get close. 😁

I got to spent 3 amazing weeks on Peter's boat in December last year.
