  We are looking for Workawayers to help with two types of paid work on Sado Island: assisting with reception at our guesthouse and working as a rower on a traditional Japanese tub boat called a “taraibune.”
  
  Before applying, please understand that this is not an opportunity to earn a large amount of money. This position is best suited to people who value unique experiences, cultural exchange, and free time more than income.
  
  Have you ever heard of Sado Island?
  
  Sado is a large island in the Sea of Japan, known for its beautiful natural scenery, traditional culture, and many local festivals. It has a peaceful and relaxed rural atmosphere.
  
  It does not have the excitement and convenience of places such as Shibuya or Kyoto, but it is an ideal place for those who would like to slow down and experience everyday life in the Japanese countryside.
  
  I was born in Tokyo, but I fell in love with Sado and moved here. I renovated a former traditional Japanese inn and turned it into Guesthouse. My goal is to create a place where Japanese and international travellers can meet and interact.
  
  There are two main types of paid work.
  
  The first is helping at the guesthouse. Your main responsibility will be checking guests in between approximately 5:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., usually three or four days per week. If a guest arrives late, the working hours may occasionally be extended. All additional working time will be paid.
  
  You may also be asked to help with a few simple tasks, such as turning off the lights, checking the building, and locking the doors. Time spent on these tasks is also paid.
  
  The second type of work is at a traditional tub-boat attraction. After completing your training, you will row a taraibune and take visitors on short sightseeing trips lasting approximately 15 to 30 minutes.
  
  Tub-boat work is normally scheduled five days per week, usually from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. However, the exact working days and hours may change depending on the season, weather, and number of visitors. On especially busy weekends or holidays, longer shifts may sometimes be available.
  
  Before you begin taking passengers, you will receive training in how to row the boat. The training usually takes between three and seven days, depending on how quickly you become comfortable with it.
  
  You may also be asked to help with preparations before the tub-boat attraction opens. All working time, including training and preparation, is paid from the beginning.
  
  For both jobs, we will discuss the schedule with you in advance and make adjustments together. Additional paid hours may be available for those who would like to work more, but we also want you to have enough free time to explore and enjoy Sado Island.
  
  Free accommodation is provided throughout your stay. For all working hours, we pay at least the applicable minimum wage in Niigata Prefecture, which will be ¥1,108 per hour from October 1, 2026.
  
  Please note that meals are not provided. You will need to cook for yourself or buy food from nearby supermarkets and restaurants. Wages are paid at the end of the month, so please bring enough money to cover your expenses until payday.
  
  To help you imagine daily life here, this is an example of a typical schedule:
  
  1. Guesthouse reception is usually from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., approximately three or four days per week. The hours may occasionally be extended if a guest arrives late.
  
  2. Tub-boat work is normally scheduled five days per week, usually from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. The schedule may change depending on the weather, season, and number of visitors.
  
  3. Meals are not provided. You can prepare your own meals in the guesthouse kitchen or buy food from nearby supermarkets and restaurants.
  
  4. Free Wi-Fi is available in your room.
  
  5. The ferry terminal and bus stops are nearby. Bicycles are also available to borrow.
  
  6. Days off for sightseeing can be arranged in advance.
  
  7. We cannot accommodate pets, and smoking is not permitted indoors.
  
  You do not need to speak Japanese to apply. We understand that Japanese is a difficult language, and previous Workawayers have managed well without speaking it.
  
  However, even a little Japanese will make it easier to communicate with local people and will probably make your experience here even more enjoyable.

  I moved to Sado from Tokyo, and I studied folklore at university. I am familiar with Sado’s culture, traditions, and local festivals, and I would be happy to share what I know with you.
  
  My wife and I also perform wadaiko, traditional Japanese drums. If you are interested, you may have an opportunity to experience this traditional performing art during your stay.
  
  Very few people in Japan still know how to row a traditional taraibune. Learning this unique skill is therefore a rare and valuable experience.
  
  The person who will teach you how to row is also one of the few remaining craftspeople on Sado who can build these boats by hand.
  
  During your stay, I hope you will take some time off to explore different parts of the island. I would be very happy if you came to love Sado as much as I do.

  I speak Japanese and a little English.
  
  When helping at the guesthouse, you will be asked to learn a few simple Japanese phrases for communicating with Japanese guests. A detailed manual explaining the guesthouse rules and procedures will be provided, so you do not need to worry.
  
  For the tub-boat work, you will begin by learning how to row the boat. It may take some practice, but I hope you will enjoy the experience.
  
  The tub-boat workplace is approximately 10 minutes from the guesthouse by car. Transportation between the guesthouse and the workplace will be provided by the staff.
  
  The guesthouse reception work and the tub-boat work are paid. Please note that meals are not provided during your stay.

  You will stay in your own private room at the guesthouse.
  
  Guesthouse is a former traditional Japanese inn. It is an old three-storey wooden building, so sound can travel easily between rooms.
  
  Your room is a Japanese-style room with tatami flooring. You will sleep on a futon, as there are no beds. There is a sink in your room, but the toilets and showers are shared with guests.
  
  Meals are not provided during your stay.
  
  The kitchen is also shared with guests, but you will have your own refrigerator and dedicated storage shelves. You are welcome to use the cooking utensils and basic seasonings provided in the kitchen.
  
  You can use the washing machine free of charge.
  
  Bicycles are also available to rent.

  If you have a driving licence that is valid in Japan, it may also be possible to borrow a car. In that case, you will be responsible for the insurance and fuel costs.
