It is impossible to fit all of the beautiful experiences I have shared with this family into a review. From the moment I arrived I felt instantly comfortable and was welcomed into their home. I loved spending time with Elena, Salva, Amaia and Guillem and I have been very inspired by their generosity, adventurous spirit and philosophy on life.

Amaia and Guillem are friendly, intelligent kids who were a joy to be around. To begin with I was a little unsure about what I was expected to teach but I found a routine - with Amaia I used the British Council LearnEnglish teens website and a mix of other games and activities and with Guillem we would do 10 minutes of a grammer/reading/writing activity followed by a game, then an activity, etc.
At the weekends and in the afternoons they invited me to join them on their many adventures in Castellón and surrounding areas. We went cycling, swimming and walking in beautiful landscapes. They introduced me to their wide circle of family and friends with whom I was able to speak Spanish, and I met a lot of inspiring people. I ended up spending a few days volunteering for their friend Rafa, who runs community arts projects in the city.
And of course I have to mention the concerts! When Salva found out I wrote songs he went out of his way to organise little concerts for me, including a concert in the residency where he works. I had the opportunity to sing to a woman who was near the end of her life, which was a profound experience. I also loved watching Salva perform his own songs and seeing how he connects with audiences of all ages, which is very beautiful.

Our experience with Amy was great for the whole family. Little by little we fitted better.
We have practised English and the kids have improved a little more during nearly 2 months.
Amy had to picked them up from school and played with them or taught them English. We organised meals and households.
As she could stay in a another appartment 5
… read more minutes from our home, she could have a bigger room and could enjoy from her free time.
We have shared many activities and trips together. She joined us in our hobbies.
We let her a bike so she could enjoy cycling around.
We payed her first Spanish class with a qualified Spanish teacher, so she continued on attending some other improvement classes in her spare time.
I think it has been a good experience for everyone.

Amaia and Guillem are beautiful, creative and fun-loving kids. They love listening to music, playing sports and playing boardgames. Elena and Salva are very kind and down to earth, they treated me like their own family :)
Castellón is a nice city and everything is more or less walking distance. It has everything you need including the beach and beautiful surrounding mountains, great for hiking. The apartment I stayed in was very comfortable, in a great location and close to their flat and school. It was a perfect balance as I was able to have my own space and free time in the mornings and then I would have lunch with the kids or spend the afternoons/evenings with them playing and practising English.

Wow this family is smiley, active, extremely busy and have a real close, tactile relationship with each other. A joy to experience! Both Elena and Salva have careers in caring for others, real worthwhile vocations. Their compassion and warm, friendly nature spreads out into their everyday life; very advantageous to a WAW.

… read more and Amaia picked me up from the coach station which I very much appreciated. From then onwards the family’s kindness and friendliness continued for my 3 week stay.
Elena and I have a lot in common, yoga, meditation and have very similar views on life. We had some very interesting conversations. She made an enormous effort to provide me with Gluten free food etc. She even made a GF quiche and GF crepes and bought a GF cake to celebrate her sister’s birthday so I too could have a slice. Although she and Salva have enormously busy lives they were always checking I was happy and I had everything I might need. Salva has musical talents. He sings and plays the guitar which I had the pleasure of witnessing.
I had a nice room in their other apartment and shared the place with 2 guys who were friendly and respectful. I spent a lot of time with the whole family hiking, going to art exhibitions or local tourist attractions and seeing new villages. I was warmly welcomed by extended family/friends too. I had a unique experience when I went with them to meet a couple in La Estrella. The only residents left in the village, everyone else has left. Fascinating to see an elderly couple who live in such basic conditions and live in great hardship really. How they cope in the winter is a mystery to me.
Amaia is a very responsible 11 year old and Guillem loves basketball. We had a few games together. They are happy children who were a pleasure to be with.
I may have only had 3 weeks with this family but it was action packed, fun and eventful. They have a real zest for life, off exploring and filling their leisure time with fulfilling interesting escapades. I will also mention they have such a wide circle of friends. No matter where we went they always bumped into someone they knew who were delighted to see them. A real testimony to their popularity.
So…I was blessed to have spent time with you all. I would love to have spent longer. I will always be eternally grateful for your wonderful hospitality and hopefully see you all again one day.

It was a perfect balance as I was able to have my own space and free time in the mornings and then I would have lunch with the kids or spend the afternoons/evenings with them playing and practising English.

Our experience with Kate was great!!
Kate was cheerful, friendly and talkative. The kids, especially our 11 year old daughter connected a lot with her. She was flexible and joined us in different activities, which we enjoyed a lot. We went to the beach, did bike rides, some trekkings and went camping.

My WorkAway experience with Elena, Salva, and the kids was an absolutely amazing experience.
The family was very friendly and always made sure that I was well looked after. I was given a bedroom in their other apartment and when I got there, they stocked the fridge with food for me.
My main aim of doing a WorkAway in Spain was to learn Spanish
… read more and Elena went out of her way to get me a Spanish tutor who I will be using even after leaving Spain by taking online classes. Elena was very supportive in this process, even paying for my first class! She also would make sure to speak a little Spanish every day so that I could understand more!
The family is very active which I really enjoyed! One evening we went on a bike ride to the beach together, and they actually let me borrow one of their bikes for the duration of my stay which I made great use of on my evening cycles! They also love hiking and being outdoors in nature. After being in a few different cities before this WorkAway, I really enjoyed each moment we spent outdoors. We also went camping for the weekend with their family friends which was extremely memorable and inspiring.
When Amaia and Guillem were still in school I would collect them at one and we would have an hour to practice English, go to the library, or have lunch before Elena returned from work. It was great because you still had free time in the morning and didn't have to rush!
If you love the outdoors, light exercise, are social, and are willing to teach English to the kids, this WorkAway is for you!
