We are a family run non-profit and art residency in central Oaxaca City, passionate about connecting internationals with local artists by teaching them about Oaxacan culture and introducing them to the bustling creative community that exists here.
We started the residency a few years ago as a way of promoting and protecting Oaxacan traditions, particularly surrounding the intersection of food and culture with art. This idea led to the creation of , we teach our artists how the traditional Oaxacan sauce “Mole” can be used as a material to paint and create with.
The residency is committed to promoting local and emerging artists, connecting them with like minded young internationals by providing a platform and collaborative space in which to create, learn about and ultimately give back to the Oaxacan community.
We try to favor emerging female and LGBTQ+ artists, between the ages of 18-30. The aim is to uplift and provide opportunities for groups who may otherwise face some disadvantages in trying to build a career in the arts.

The residency offers young artists an opportunity to collaborate, develop ideas, and explore new practices. You will be immersed in the artistic and cultural community of this vibrant city, mixing with like-minded individuals, building connections and developing ideas to take on with you in your future practice.
Oaxaca is full of all kinds of art and culture, as well as active nightlife. You will have close access to countless bars, restaurants, museums and galleries. Public transport is also widely available, although a little tricky to get the hang of, but don’t worry, we’ll show you how to get around! Either way, the whole downtown area and other popular neighborhoods are well within walking distance. Within half an hour drive, you can be out of the city browsing textiles at a nearby town or hiking in the mountains that surround the valley.
The residency consists of two central art projects, the first being a 2m x 1.40m canvas painting with mole centering around the theme of religion. This can be as inventive as you would like but must ultimately interrogate the relationship between religion as a tool of unity and also destruction, what it means to you, and then also what it means to the local people here in Oaxaca.
The second project will be more personal to you, in whatever medium or artistic style you prefer to work with. Once finished you will present your work in a showcase exhibition where we will look to invite local artists and art collaborators to evaluate, appreciate and discuss what you have created.
Expected hours & deadlines:
Monday - Friday, 10am - 2pm
The first mole painting will be due 2 weeks from when you start your stay at the residency. Depending on the time you have left with us in Oaxaca, the second project is slightly more flexible, the amount of time you take to research and produce your piece is up to you. We can discuss these time frames in more detail within your application.
