Upstart Intentional Community, with artistic and culturally dynamic roots being designed upon permaculture principals.
Dancing, healthy food, dynamic architecture, gardening and good people. This is what we are contributing towards here on Salt Spring Island.
Location is premised on the top of Mt. Maxwell, with 200mile views across the ocean and neighboring islands. Property is 13.5 acres of dynamic topography and established forest. Property is also beside largest provincial park on Island, with hiking trails to both the ocean and the highest mount peaks.
Social landscape involves dynamic, kind and intelligent people of a diverse age range. We aim to keep fit, eat healthy, and take good care of ourselves and one another. Please feel welcome to submit an application to work-stay here and help us build the vision!
Please keep in mind that the community is still in it's infancy. This both means that we are still in the earlier stages of development, and also means that you can be a part of developing a well intended permaculture plan (that includes edible landscapes, environmentally sustainable buildings, and the on-set of integrative social permaculture).
Please tell us as much about yourself as possible, and we look forward to having you here!

Travelers and visitors can benefit from being part of the early stages of an intentionally designed community landscape.
What we are attempting is of high quality in both building and landscape design. Our team includes skilled professionals in agriculture, building and social design.
Being a part of our team will provide an opportunity to learn a variety of skill sets and get hands on experience curating a dynamic physical and cultural landscape.
Please note that behaviors exhibited on this land strive towards a high standard of respect, emotional maturity, and communication. We ask that everyone visiting our community project do so with good intentions, and to respect the other people living here as well as the overall ecology of the environment.
Otherwise, come and enjoy your stay! We have movie nights on our large projector, make music around the camp fire, and also hold the occasional dance party!
Many forms of assistance are appreciated. Our intention is to encourage people to work with their own strengths - even while this may sometimes involve learning new things.
Since we are constructing many buildings, all carpentry skills are appreciated. Since we are feeding and supporting those living on the land, and building a sound administrative landscape, there are a wide array of roles to be filled.
To summarize, options include:
1. Assisting our lead builders as we finalize construction on several structures. This includes a multitude of related support tasks.
2. Landscaping paths and other leisure area's.
3. Permaculture gardens, hugel mounds, garden paths, etc.
4. Cooking and meal prep
5. Possible web design
6. Art projects, such as colorful signs.
Our weeks work on a lunar schedule, and so we usually do 4-5 days on the land, and have 3 day weekends.

Accommodation:
Camping spots along beautiful, moss filled bluff's, under a rich canopy of Arbutus, Hemlock, Cedar and Douglas Fur.
(Travelers are encouraged to bring their own tent. There may also be a limited number of spaces for those who wish to bring a camper van.)
Facilities:
1. A cool, outdoor community kitchen (to be further developed this year)
2. Indoor and outdoor showering and bathing facilities
3. Wifi internet
4. Laundry.
5. A yoga platform
6. Occasional use of an indoor living room equipped with a movie projector and an advanced sound system for dance parties
Food:
Meals can be prepared in our community outdoor kitchen. Community eats largely local, vegetarian, mostly vegan, and ultimately healthy.
Food is prepared and provided to work-away guests for Lunch and Dinner, on the working day schedule. For Breakfast there will usually be oats, bananas, and some other basics available.
Non-work days, work-away guests can choose to buy into our daily meal plan, and to use our collective ingredients at $15 per day.
*Guests should expect to be responsible over any specialty food items.
Work-stay Schedule:
As mentioned, our work-week is based on the lunar cycles instead of the Gregorian work week. Some Lunar Weeks have 8 days, and some have 7 (depending on the lunar cycle of that month). This means that while each Lunar week has 3 days off, some lunar weeks have 4 days of work, and some have 5 day of work. Work-away guests will be given a calendar for each lunar cycle so they can also become familiar with these lunar rhythms.
Depending on the needs of some travelers, the work-days and the work-times can both be adjusted to accommodate differing needs provided that we have sufficient help during the times that we need it most.
Land Schedule:
Currently, we have one weekly land-meeting and group check in. In the mornings, some people do stretching or yoga on one of our platforms which others are welcome to join in on. Otherwise, there will be group meals during lunch and dinner on work-weeks. As the land development continues, more community activities will be integrated into the weekly land-schedule.
Salt Spring Island is a travelers mecca. We have some of the worlds best organic farms, amazing places to hike, and a truly dynamic social and geographic landscape. Lots to soak in,, even if it's just hanging in a hammock in the woods.

Camping and use of our infrastructure is $20 per day. If joining in on collective meals, we ask for an additional $15 per day for lunch and dinner.
We have one spot remaining for a camper van under 22'. Water and electrical hook ups are possible, but under specific circumstances.
