  Welcome to our home in Sydney, NS. We're both artists (musician and mixed media) and do regular-ish jobs (academic & social worker) to support our eclectic lives (travel, martial arts, making things). We share our home with Theodora the Freelance bulldog, Ezhara the Tortie feline, and Thor the Savanah cat. They are the household bosses and will insist on visiting you. If you are a traveller you'll have found your community in Sydney - we're typically off exploring elsewhere in the world 2-3 months a year. I've travelled to all the continents except Antartica (someday) and have lived in France, South Africa, and Australia.
  
  Our property is a 1912 four-square heritage house that is way too large for us but people had huge families back in the day.... We're almost finished construction on a suite in the basement level and that's where you might come in with some help...

  Mark teaches martial arts (HEMA and Kageryu) and bass (jazz is his great love). Alison travels, does mixed media art, architecture, used to teach yoga, writes, gardens, and makes/builds anything and everything. If you're interested in design we'll talk!

  Ajuda

  While what we're looking depends on the season and weather, the assistance will primarily be property maintenance, gardening, errand-running, household cleaning, and painting/construction help in finishing the basement suite and maybe the attic space. This will include painting (interior/exterior weather dependent), yard/garden maintenance, gardening help, staining the soon-to-be backyard deck. Maybe using a drill to put screws into plywood and deck boards. If you have very minimal carpentry skills or the confidence to learn (ex: straight cuts on a chop saw and using a nail gun) even better.

  I'm currently working on getting my A2 level french to B2 so very welcome for a language exchange.

  Acomodação

  You'll have our guest room and a bathroom all to yourself, both of which are located on the second floor of our home. That floor also has our bedroom and ensuite as well as my yoga room. We have a giant kitchen for you to cook in. You'll be responsible for your own cooking and meals because we're all over the place with mealtimes. We will add your items to our regular grocery orders. We're also happy to share what we cook if eating schedules align.
  
  We are strict vegetarians so no dead-things cooking in the kitchen please or in the grocery order. We do not care if you want to bring-in pre-prepared meals with meat in them (e.g. if you want to order a pepperoni pizza).

  We are in a walkable location to Sydney's "downtown" (if you're from an urban centre you'll understand why I put downtown in quotes), it's about a ten minute walk from our house to the ocean/harbour boardwalk. Sydney's public transit is terrible but does exist with the bus stop a block away. We have two electric bikes you're welcome to borrow anytime.
  
  We're located about an hours drive from Cape Breton's Cabot Trail and there are lots of outdoor activities around us on the Eastern side of Cape Breton Island as well. We have an all-wheel drive SUV you can borrow on days Mark doesn't need it to get to work (he does approximately 14 shifts a month, the other 16 days are up for grabs) if you want to do some island exploration.
  
  We are both neurodivergent and pretty relaxed about people living how they want to live, but no cigarette smoking anywhere near the house, I have massive allergies. We're 420 friendly and not fussed about vaping inside. If you like rigid rules and schedules this is not the work-away for you. If you do not like animals this is not the work-away for you.
