Descrição
Aloha!
Open to 2+ people traveling together who are over 25 years old and work independently on assigned tasks.
We’re a positive, energetic couple living off-grid on six acres of beautiful lava in the remote Kaʻū District on the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. For over 30 years, we’ve been deeply passionate about international cultural exchanges, welcoming global travelers into our lives, hearts, and home.
Our family's journey with Workaway began through our daughter, who explored the globe using the program. Inspired by her journeys, we became hosts and have also personally participated in cultural exchanges across Spain, Switzerland, Germany, France, and the USA.
We live a lifestyle focused on sustainability, meaningful human connection, and harmony with nature. Life here is centered around simple, shared pleasures: exploring the hidden gems of the island, spending days at the beach, cooking meals together, and hosting casual gatherings with friends. We also love to play cribbage and are always happy to pass on the game to our guests!
Our off-grid land is shared with our two sweet dogs and a dear friend, who are all part of our tight-knit ohana (family):
Wrigley: Our 13-year-old Corgi and the wise elder of the house.
Haupia: Our 3-year-old energetic, playful Whippet mix.
We are inviting enthusiastic global travelers (2+ people traveling together) to stay with us for an authentic, immersive island experience. This is a pure cultural and educational exchange. We love sharing our knowledge of local community values, Hawaiian traditions, and the daily rhythm of the 'āina (land).
📖 Educational & Off-Grid Skills We Share:
Living completely off-grid offers an incredible opportunity for learning. We love hosting travelers who are curious about self-sufficiency and sustainable lifestyles. Together, we can explore and share knowledge on:
Wood-Fired Kitchen Cooking: Learning the art of managing fire, temperature control, and preparing delicious, hearty meals using a traditional wood-fired setup.
Solar Power & Energy Management: Understanding how a residential solar array operates and managing power usage with the sun's natural cycles.
Rainwater Catchment Systems: Learning how water is collected, filtered, and conserved responsibly in an off-grid environment.
Sustainable & Minimalist Living: Swapping ideas on eco-friendly habits, reducing waste, and living creatively in harmony with nature.
What the Exchange Looks Like:
We invite you to integrate into our daily family rhythm. There is no structured labor, commercial work, or heavy construction. Instead, we look for companions who want to share in our daily lifestyle—whether that means practicing languages, exchanging cooking recipes from your home country, sharing stories around the dinner table, or joining us on outdoor island adventures. In return, we offer warm hospitality, a unique space to experience the Big Island, and lifelong global connections. -

Opportunities to Learn and Explore:
• Cultural Immersion: Learn about Hawaiian culture and local traditions by participating in community gatherings, farmers' markets, and local events.
• Sustainable & Off-Grid Living: Explore how a residential solar power system operates, learn about rainwater catchment filtration, and exchange ideas on eco-conscious choices in daily life.
• Culinary Arts & Off-Grid Cooking: Gain hands-on experience cooking in a traditional wood-fired kitchen. Share recipes and learn the crafts of artisan bread making, sausage crafting, and fresh pasta making.
• Creative & Creative Arts: Express your artistic side through collaborative projects like painting murals around our off-grid homestead.
• Homestead Hobbies & Caring for the ‘Āina: Share in our love for the land through backyard gardening, composting, and learning about native plants. You are also welcome to join us in hanging out with our sweet dogs and enjoying the company of our backyard chickens.
• Community Engagement: Join us for local beach cleanups, neighborhood gatherings, and grassroots sustainability efforts.
What We’re Looking For:
• Enthusiastic about learning, creating, and sharing lifestyles
• Comfortable with remote, quiet country living
• Deeply respectful of nature, local culture, and others
• Positive, self-motivated, and open-minded companions
• Transportation & Getting Around:
• Because of our remote location, guests must arrange their own transportation to explore the island:
• Car Rental: Renting a vehicle is highly recommended and by far the easiest way to explore the vast landscapes of the Big Island.
• Public Bus: The Hele-On Bus provides free public transportation across the Big Island. However, please note that island transit takes time; a round trip to Kona or Hilo can easily take 4+ hours depending on the schedule.
Requirements:
• International Driver's License
• Active cell service (we must be able to stay in touch easily)
• • • Strictly non-smokers only
• Open to 2+ people traveling together who are over 25 years old
• A genuine love for a quiet, remote country lifestyle
• A Note About Our Location:
• We are located in the remote Kaʻū District on the Big Island (not Oahu). We are about 1.5 hours away from the major towns of Hilo and Kona, but we are just minutes away from local grocery stores, casual restaurants, and community events. Kaʻū is a culturally rich area characterized by dramatic landscapes, ancient lava flows, and breathtaking ocean views.
Come Share, Learn, and Grow With Us!
This is a space to discover new lifestyle skills, build cross-cultural connections, embrace a simpler life, and explore the true spirit of Hawaii. If you are excited about meaningful cultural exchange and life-changing experiences, we would love to hear from you.
