Descrição
The goal of our project is to create new opportunities for the villagers and the children and therefore help to develop the island. The main focus is to develop educational grounds for children and helping around the farm during the times, when there is no school.
The project takes place in Don Nangloy, which is an island located in 4000 islands region, Champasak, Laos. On the island there are 2000 people living in 350 families. We focus on improving the life on the island with the help of volunteers. Also we host guests in the bungalows at the farm.
As there is a lot to do we are looking for people who can take the initiative, who are self-motivated and can carry out a task from start to finish. This really is a opportunity to help build something meaningful from grounds up.
* Amongst other things, we are in need of school materials, books and activities in English. Feel free to bring these. *
Please note that the homestay takes about 1 hour to travel on the bus from Pakse or also from Don Det, and since it is on an island, you will then need to take a short boat ride. I will send you the details shortly before your arrival.

Oportunidades de intercâmbio cultural e aprendizado
Life at Don Nangloy gives you an authentic insight into Lao Lifestyle. You will have the opportunity to learn the language and discover how Lao people from the countryside are like. Especially the time you spend with the children helps you to understand how it is like to grow up on this island and shows you the value of the small things in life.
In your time off you can visit the local white whiskey brewery, go fishing or take a sunset tour on the Mekong River or go on a river cruise. The local village is a dreamy place to explore and you will find different shops and a temple there. Your host Phonephet is very welcoming and will help you with everything you may need. Moreover, your host was a monk before and can introduce you to Buddhism teachings and to the practice of meditation.

You are expected to work about 1.5h to 3h a day. You will work 5 days of the weeks, the other ones you will have holidays. We want you to have a great experience while volunteering here and we’ll make sure that you won’t work too much, especially since the days here can get quite hot.
We have a list of things that need to be done and we are working on, but we welcome all kinds of new ideas and little improvements to our project.
Some of the general things you can help with are:
• Wash dishes after meals, help clean up the kitchen and main-area. We also want to set up a cleaning schedule for the volunteers
• Babysitting duties
• Prepare Lessons for the children and develop an education-plan, keeping in mind the different ages and skill-levels of the children
• Promote the project and homestay online
• General construction work are necessary. There are not a lot of building materials available, so you have to be resourceful at times
• General organization, including maintaining a google docs document with information for the volunteers
Some tasks are seasonal:
• October – May: As a volunteer you will teach English on the weekends and work around the farm during the week. That includes weeding, planting and watering the plants. Currently we are building a new part of our farm, the Organic Farm (banana trees, coconut trees, pineapple trees need to be planted)
• November – January: You will help harvesting rice and peanuts.
• June – September: We need volunteers to help my family predominantly with farmwork around the rice paddies (grow rice) as there's no school.

Acomodação
The handmade built bungalows at Don Nangloy Island are right next to the precious Mekong. You have the opportunity to experience the authentic Lao lifestyle on the island. The lodge before the bungalow allows you to have perfect view at the beautiful sunsets. The rooms consist of a double bed, fan, table and electricity. They are simple but clean. We have a shared bathroom with a toilet and shower. Right next to the bungalows is the common area with tables and a kitchen.
I currently have one locally employed staff, my wife Pouk. She freshly prepares 3 meals a day, changes the beds for the guests and cleans the bathroom. If you choose to eat with us, we cook for all volunteers together and you will eat together. Volunteers are able to bring their own food or buy food from the mainland to bring here if they wish. But know that there are no markets or restaurants on the island, only a small shop, it is very difficult to source your own food. If you choose to eat 3 times a day with us, we expect a donation of 7$ per day. With this contribution we can manage to provide you with 3 meals; breakfast, lunch and dinner. Additionally, for 1$ more, you can choose to have unlimited tea, water and coffee. If you have any dietary restrictions, please tell us and we will make it work. It would be nice to have you.
For personal access to internet you can get sim cards for quite cheap (Unitel works very well here). If you need occasional connection, through my hotspot, you can ask me. There is not ATM on the island. Please note that we are asking for a minimum stay of 1 week, which is the time needed for kids to know and trust you. If you stay less 1 week we ask you to pay for your stay.
Families are not paying for English classes, so we are unfortunately not getting any income from your work. Therefore, we hope you can understand our budgeting plans.
If this is not a problem for you, please let us know your arrival date so we can manage the date correctly. I will send you more information about our day to day life and the tasks for the volunteers, as soon as you decide to stay here.

100% recommended :)
We really had the feeling we are not welcomed. Phonpeth never had a meal with us. He always put the food on the table and off he went. I didn’t even have one conversation with him. He was not interested in us at all. Not even in the kids or school.
Apart from this we didn’t do any… read more
