Hello, and thanks for your interest in reading more about life and work at our eco lodge:-)!
SHORT SUMMARY
Our project is a sustainably built and functional off grid retreat centre located in a valley where 2 rivers meet and not far from the Serra da Estrela Mountain Range (the highest point of mainland Portugal) which makes for dramatic beauty in nature. Since 2017 we have welcomed Workawayers to help us build, expand, and maintain the retreat center…. It has been a pleasure to meet so many beautiful people from across the globe and we’re really grateful for all the helping hands!
Workawayers enjoy the complete immersion in nature and get to learn about what is involved in living & working off grid.
Who is Who & Roles at the Off Grid Retreat Center....
Rory, Ashley, baby - founders/owners
Rory - manages building, expansion and maintenance of the retreat centre plus works off-site as an engineer and builder for others
Ashley - transitioning to maternity leave but oversees the management of the retreat business, volunteers plus is a holistic therapist and yoga teacher
Baby - growing and being cute
Hannah - kitchen & garden manager and holistic retreat chef
She lives nearby and is here most days when retreats are going and about 1-2 times per week during the off season
Karolina - live in manager
Workaway management, front of house coordination for retreat groups and in general on-site needs
Helen - marketing & social media manager, photography/videography
Manages the website and social media. She lives nearby and works here about once per week
Workaway team - A transient group of 3-5 volunteers from all over the world normally with shared interests in nature, wellness and experiencing what communal life off grid and work at a retreat center is like. The team has an outdoor kitchen, shared bell tent, and other normal camping style tents.
THE WORK AND LIFE HERE:
The retreat centre is a place for wellness in wild and breathtaking nature. It's essential that workawayers are happy to live with ALL the elements. Rain or shine. Hot or cold. Although we do have wifi, life here is basic and off the grid so modern day conveniences are not a reality here 100% of the time. Come for the beautiful space to be in nature, not to be able to be online all the time ;-)
Volunteers have a rustic outdoor space exclusive for workawayers' use that has a fully functional kitchen. They also happily get some retreat food leftovers.
The venue is alcohol, drug free and non-smoking. We aim to maintain a healthy and peaceful environment for all staying.
We accept and respect all food habits (vegans, veggies, meat eaters etc) and nutritional needs in the kitchen.
We run a retreat business so it's essential volunteers are mindful of holding an appropriate space for retreat participants. When on shift a professional attitude is 100% expected from volunteers. Team work mentality and willingness to multitask is essential and hospitality experience is preferred.
Off Grid:
We use Solar Power and so things that use a lot of electricity cannot be used if the sun is not there. Water comes from the land so we ask it is conserved (less than 5min showers etc).
Accommodation:
A shared dormitory (3-4 at a time) style Bell Tent or a normal camping tent. Both with quality twin size mattresses.
Bathrooms:
Compost toilets, solar heated shower.
More about Ashley & Rory:

With the help of many, we've managed the invasive/non-native tree forest and have planted many native ones, built all of the buildings for the retreat centre and our home from natural materials, and opened for business as a retreat centre in 2019. We've hosted a variety of retreats, workshops and Yoga Teacher Trainings. We have retreat groups coming from all over the world to rent the venue for their retreats and trainings. Ashley runs a 3 week long Yoga Teacher Training during the year, and offers Yoga classes to the community. These community classes, you are welcome to join!

The area is rich in Portuguese culture. The weekly market in Tabua is a great place to meet people in the area, both Portuguese and estrangeiros (foreigners). There's a unique hospitality and way of life in Central Portugal that's refreshing and fulfilling, which Rory and Ashley have fallen in love with, and hope that workawayers will enjoy as much as we do.
Ashley and other yoga teachers have regularly scheduled yoga classes. There is a river beach on site and a deep creek for swimming in. Workawayers will have the opportunity to learn about off grid living, building with natural materials, gardening, and helping host retreats.Anfitriões que oferecem uma remuneração de acordo com o salário mínimo do país.

The property and area around it is ideal for free outdoor activities such as swimming, kayaking, hiking and cycling. There are plenty of river beaches in the area, and we have paddle boards available for use. With the Serra de Estrela mountain range nearby, there are plenty of breath-taking hikes. But if you want a break from the country side there's a train just 15 minutes from the project that connects to Lisbon, Porto, and anywhere else you'd like to discover on time off.
