  • Descrição

Selamat datang! We are a treehouse homestay located in a small Malay village in Johor. We have seven guest treehouses and a meeting hall built from jungle materials (bamboo, woven roofs, bark, etc) and three staff/volunteer treehouses, a school, and a library built from recycled materials. Many of our buildings feature mud building or green roofs. Our reception area has an organic garden with chickens and a wood-fire earth oven. The focus of our homestay is bringing city people, especially children, to the jungle to learn about sustainable lifestyles and the environmental issues facing Malaysia. We aim to give children a space to play freely and learn why our jungles are worth protecting. Most of our guests our local, so you will meet Malaysians of many different backgrounds.

We are located in a small kampung with predominantly local guests, so you will meet lots of Malaysians of different backgrounds. You will learn about treehouses, mud building, green roofs, and other forms of eco-building. Our guest houses are built in the style of the Temiar, one of Malaysia's indigenous tribes, who we are very lucky to have on our staff.

  • Ajuda

As a volunteer, we hope you will learn about natural and indigenous architecture, the plants and animals in our jungle, and our culture. Volunteer work varies- prepare tree houses, socialize with guests, and maybe even lead a jungle trek! During low season you will help maintain the property, repair and build tree houses, and work in our garden. We love when volunteers share their skills and knowledge and lead their own projects, so let us know if you have any ideas! Our three acre property is located on a mountainside, so be prepared to walk uphill on our jungle path 2-3 times a day. You may also choose to volunteer with our Waldorf school- if you have any skills or talents, we would love you to share them with our students!

Volunteers work approx. 25 hours a week with one to two days off a week and stay a minimum of two weeks. We prefer non-smoking volunteers who speak English, Mandarin or Malay.

  • Acomodação

Accommodation is shared- usually volunteers stay in the open-air staff treehouse with private toilet, but are welcome to sleep anywhere we don’t currently have guests. Many volunteers like to move every few nights so that they can try out all the treehouses. Our staff houses are built of recycled materials and are open air. Bags are usually stored at our lobby to keep belongings safe from our monkey neighbors, with volunteers usually carrying a small bag of essentials up to the treehouse. Guest houses, which volunteers may use when unoccupied, are built from jungle material and less open- though there is still quite a bit of animal traffic and airflow. All our water is cold- fresh from the spring! All houses are equipped with power, fans, matresses, pillows, bedding, mosquito nets, and private toilet.

Food is mostly vegetarian and a mixture of self-cooking and group meals with groceries, kitchen, and garden veggies provided. Our water comes from a spring on the mountain and is drinkable from the tap.

    Algo mais...

During their free time, volunteers can relax in our sky nets, climb our treetop tower, join our daily morning jungle trek, enjoy the views from our sunset tower, swim in the nearby waterfall, explore the village, or climb the mountain. Our property has six live-in staff and four schoolteachers. We often take group outings to nearby sights and restaurants.

Our village is small. There are a few simple resturaunts and a small convenience store. Transport into town is limited, but you are welcome get a ride with us when we go into town for groceries and laundry.
