  • Description

*** I'm currently in Montreal helping a host with a renovation project and will spend the Christmas holidays in Edmonton. From January 2026, I plan to travel through Alberta and BC towards Vancouver/Vancouver Island, aiming to experience the valleys and mountains by volunteering on various farms along the way. ***

Hi! My name is Chris, I'm 32 years old, and I grew up in Hamburg, Germany, with my mum and my younger sister. I've lived in Melbourne in Australia the past years to pursue a PhD in molecular biology, and just submitted my thesis a few months ago.

As it is my dream to work and live in Canada in the future – and to take a reflecting pause from 5 years of PhD research –, I'm setting out for a Work & Travel year in Canada from October 2025 to see more of its regions and seasons. I've joined Workaway to build on my previous volunteering activities as part of WWOOF on Australian farms and as a unique way to meet like-minded people and experience life in Canada.

I have a natural curiosity, a problem-solving mindset, and a high level of self-organization. When I'm not in the lab, I'm on the bike exploring the surroundings and try new things like bouldering, hot yoga, and improv acting. Moreover, in the lab I was part of a grassroots team to promote and implement sustainable actions in research and we shared our achievements with the local and international community.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

I would describe myself as an allrounder with broad skills and enthusiasm. I'm fit, I'm patient, I get my hands dirty, and I have a can-do mindset. The world of science and research has taught me many transferable skills, including project planning and management, team work and communication, and quickly grasping new concepts (not to mention a high frustration tolerance :). I also have some experience in renovation and DIY from helping my mum restoring the original charm of her 200-year-old half-timbered house in the German countryside. In addition, taking beginners improv acting classes provided me with a fresh perspective on adaptability, being observant, and not leaving anyone hanging.

During my undergrad days, I used to work side jobs as a moving helper because I liked the exercise and making people smile in the process. For half a year, I've worked part-time helping primary school kids with extra lessons and sometimes stepped in to lead PE classes. Throughout my time in Australia, I've volunteered at a sheep and agroforestry farm and was involved in probably every sheep-related task there is (mustering, drafting, dagging, weaning, shearing, and of course cuddling the herding dogs and puppies). I've also gained experience with gardening (weeding, mulching, lawn mowing, tree pruning, fencing) and forestry work (wood splitting, chainsawing, tree planting).

I have a strong interest in science communication, and I'm always happy to teach and talk about the magical world of biology :)

  • Autres infos...

I grew up with dogs, taekwondo, and fantasy books. I'm always keen to see a musical, rock concert, or comedy show. Even though I rarely got a chance to play, I have a special interest in all kinds of board/card/pen & paper/and social deduction games.
