Between high school and junior high I've taken 4 years of Spanish. I've done 3 humanitarian trips to Mexico and am very interested in completely immersing myself in the language.

I became a Certified Nursing Assistant, Emergency Medical Technician, and eventully a Registered Nurse (BSN). I've worked on a Surgical Oncology floor, at an Assisted LIving Facility, and providing home care. I love the human body and the opportunity to help others heal.

I worked in the Tonto National Forest w/ teenagers. We made our own backpacks and shelters, created fire from sticks and rocks, etc. I actively seek to go outside my comfort zone to grow and help others.

I've worked as an environmental educator, conference counselor, tutor, and substitute teacher. I love learning and teaching others.

I have a special ability to connect with others. I am curious, brave, and resilient.

I love ultimate frisbee, running barefoot in the snow, dancing in the rain, doing handstands on mountain tops, and camping in my little Prius Leo. I have 8 siblings, 2 of which were adopted from China. I love my family!

I’m so grateful for the opportunity I had to spend about two weeks working here in Cajones (aprx. an hour from Guanajuato by bus). It is such a neat community project with incredible resources! One of my favorite parts of my stay was helping with the environmental camp. Rather than having the day divided into “lectures,” the entire camp was a magical mystery adventure. The staff seamlessly wove in the history of the area and helped the children find pride in their roots. I treasured the opportunity to share my love of the stars in a mini lesson around the campfire one night.

Two mornings a week, children with disabilities come here. I loved being able to work with them! It was fascinating learning about equine therapy and delightful being in the kitchen when the older kids got to cook. Plus, I loved learning some ASL (Valery is amazing)!

In terms of the afternoons, this place provides computers for the children to use to work on homework after school. You never know how many kids will come which makes it a bit difficult to plan activities. Embrace the flow! One of the volunteers that left shortly after I arrived had been doing watercolor with women from the community before their Zhumba classes M, W, and F… creativity is key! Don’t be afraid to introduce new ideas.

Shout out to Don Juan! He is the glue of this place and literally knows how to fix just about everything. Plus he has the coolest cowboy hat. And big thanks to Chelo! She is intelligent, kind, and was my go-to for questions (luckily, she knows a considerable amount of English as well).

In terms of activities… Leah (the other Workaway volunteer) and I thoroughly enjoyed sharing a delicious Dia del Amor y Amistad brunch with Don and Chelo. We also treasured visiting a mine and a couple museums with Chelo shortly before I left. Can’t forget to mention an unforgettable night watching the Super Bowl with Todd and some of his friends in Guanajuato! There is so much to do in Guanajuato, and I absolutely fell in love with the area (singing in the streets, yummy pastry shops, brightly colored houses, the list goes on:).

*Note - Living conditions were phenomenal and I appreciated the food they purchased for us for breakfast (ex. tortillas, eggs, bananas, cereal, milk:).

Additional job assignments may include caring for the plants, animals and compost (all of which are rather enjoyable and easy to do).
