Hallo, Soy Oriane (o Ori). Tengo 32 años. I'm a waitress and weaver-recycler based in Berlin. I like kids, singing, hiking, biking, sheeps, goats, chickens, donkeys! Me encantan tambien la radio y los corto-metrajes. I live in flatsharing since 2013, and did ten wwoofing or workaway until now. Detalle pa les que quieren saber, i smoke only one/two cigaret(s) a day, and don't drink much alcohol.

I want to practice german, meet new people out of the city, learn more about the german culture, follow learning and practicing technics and ethics for greener autonom communities of tomorrow.

i'd like to learn more, learn "tout-court" or practice :
_ house renovation or/and eco-construction, plomberie, natural isolations, charpenteries, les enduits naturels variés.
_ beekeeping, pottering, mozaic, basketworking, plessage.
_ gardenning, élaguer, also learn the basics about medicinal plants and bota in general.
_ animal global as specific caring, how to use goat's or sheep's milk, "spin the whool" we say that ? filer la laine, et la teindre (i learnt how to sheep sheave).
_ do my own soap too, good breds.

Me gusta tmb restore wooden furnitures, polish and paint old shutters ; replacer des piquest pour enclos ; i followed an intensive permaculture class 2 weeks 2021 ; i also followed workshops of non violent communication ; and female self-defense classes.

About teaching part, i can initiate to history of Art a bit, to classical european musics as much as actual musics or ethnomusicology (traditional répertoires) i did it with kids in Latvia and loved sharing my knowledge of world music and anthropology. Kids were amazed too.

Bon, ouais ok on a un peu traîné pour écrire l'avis. Mais on savait pas trop quoi dire pour décrire Oriane. C'est un mélange entre une tornade et une tempête. Oriane a toujours la pêche, même les temps calmes sont des déchainements de marrades et de discussions endiablées.

Oriane is interested in different projects, likes to work on them and finish them as good as possible. Easy going with communication. She likes different traditions and cultures. She showed school kids different presentations that were very interesting and informative. Always ready to help.

My stay at the Hostel was short but wonderful. I had to leave after four days working for personal resons.

This place breathes peace, the decoration and all details are well thought, and you can take ten minuts to just watch one room how cute it is. The customers are relaxed and the staff is nice.

Oriane had been looking for a host for a long time so when I couldn´t host her I felt sorry for her and arranged it so that she could stay with my parents-in-law instead. I tried to be very clear with things such as what being a part of the family means to us but still she obviously had very different expectations.

Prior to her arrival I got the… read more feeling as we exchanged e-mails that this would not be a good fit and offered her a way out of this, as I could read between the lines that she basically desperately needed a place to stay but very much wanted to do her own thing rather than joining the farm life. I should have trusted my instinct but her persistence in wanting to stay despite my warnings made me ignore them.

With regards to the expectations of volunteers and the possibility of using our cars etc, I believe I was very clear and am sorry that there was miscommunication here. To be precise, I informed Oriane three months before her arrival that "There is no public transport from our farms to Akureyri. But we always figure something out to get volunteers there when they need to go there. But off course we cannot drive you there everyday so if you are not interested in spending much time on the farm in general then you should rather try to find hosts in Akureyri or at least closer to Akureyri. But of course if there is anything special that you want to attend to on the weekends then we will make sure you can do that. It is even possible to lend a car, but only if the roads are clear (no snow or ice). The basic is that we are flexible and we need others to be flexible as well - because we treat everyone in our homes as family - not as employees :)"

It was obvious the first days after her arrival that this would not work out, for example when she left the barn half through her first milking session to take a shower... Even after telling me specifically the day before that she absolutely wanted to work just as much as anyone else in the family.

I am truly sorry that this didn´t work out but I guess it´s hard to find a perfect match every single time. She found another host in Akureyri after some days anyway and we brought her there safely.

So as a message to other volunteers out there, don´t force yourself into a situation that obviously does not suit you, just because you booked your ticked and desperately need a place to stay. I think that is no less abusive (regarding the hospitality of the host inviting you into their home) than asking people to spend more time working than they care to do. Lets just all be honest with each other from the start and make the most of workaway :)

Steinunn and Sigurdur are so nice and you will enjoy your stay in Iceland with them, for sure! Reykjavik is so beautiful and there's so much to visit.
