  • Description

    Hi,

I worked as a Project Ranger on Sheffield's Allotment sites for over 22 years and took voluntary redundancy from my role in April 2023 to explore new opportunities. I'm mostly looking to work with animals and/or renovate buildings and structures as I'm possibly interested in running my own smallholding in the future.

Happy to work somewhere remote too as I was a voluntary Warden for the National Trust in South East Cornwall many years ago. Solitude won't be a problem for me but neither will be socialising and contributing to cooking and cleaning.

My first workaway was in Hesse, Germany over the summer of 2023 where I helped out with animals such as Donkeys, Llamas and Camels for 2 months at Projekt Sultan in Breitenborn and this was followed up by doing renovation work on an old house and gardening for 3 weeks in Jesberg. I then went to Portumna, Ireland in November to look after horses and do grounds maintenance work.

I went back to the Ranger Service in Sheffield in Dec 2023 on a temporary contract but this finished in September 25 which meant I could now dedicate more of my future to workaway. This started at Beara Farm Animal Sanctuary, Adrigole, Ireland in November where I really enjoyed living and looking after a variety of rescue animals. I've had some great hosts and have benefitted by doing and learning about different things from all of them.

I'm currently helping out a host looking after horses and doing practical work in East Clare, Ireland until the end of March and then I'll be going to help out my previous hosts at Projekt Sultan in Germany until June and look forward to new adventures after that.

  • Quelles sont vos compétences ?

Worked in a variety of outdoor settings with a variety of tools and machinery. Current renewed and in-date certificates (NPTC/Lantra) for Chainsaw & small tree felling, Strimmer/Bruchcutter/Clearing Saw and Pesticide Application (knapsack, injection, stump treatment). Also trained and certification for the use of lawn mowers, bank commanders, pole pruners, woodchippers and tractors.

Clean UK Driving Licence including trailer use.

I like to try my hand at most things practical and enjoyed helping out a friend modernise their flat in Whitby during 2022. Also open to learn a language(s), it's never been a strong point but I feel it's time to push myself in this area.

Covered as Allotment Officer on a couple of occasions which helped further develop my people and budgetary skills if needed.

After a long time of working in one role, doing Workaway has taught me to welcome the unknown and new situations. I've gained new knowledge, increased confidence and I'm also more relaxed and patient from the experiences it's given me.

Always up for a game of chess and enjoy playing card and board games. Like to read books too.

Did the Great North Run (half marathon) in 2018 and have since kept up running through doing parkrun or going out on my own if that isn't an option.

Enjoyed being a voluntary gate steward for Oxfam at four Glastonbury Festivals in the mid to late 1990's.

Like to visit different places and take in the different cultures and environments of where I go.
