I like engaging with animals. I am planning to improve my German in the following months and would love to take part in the local culture.
Description
Hello, My name is Hsuan and I have stayed in Germany for 3 years in my previous degree. I am traveling around before my master’s degree in Agrigenomics start in September. Enhancing my German skills is my main reason for seeking a workaway opportunity, thus it would be nice if the host is fond of cultural exchanges. I am fluent in Mandarin Chinese and English, with some knowledge in Japanese.

The type of help I can provide includes general chores such as cleaning, basic cooking, paint refurbishing, gardening and pet sitting. I'm very fond of animals and have been a volunteer on and off in animal shelters for cats and dogs. In my previous Workaway exchanges, I also helped with animals such as horses, chickens, ducks, a wild boar, dogs, and cats. I also did art projects and other maintenance jobs around the premises of a Seminarhaus.

During the Workaway exchange, I’m primarily looking for a place with animals in an English-friendly environment to improve my German. I also exchanged my driver's license to a German one and would appreciate it if we could go for a drive together sometimes and help me get used to driving. I will gladly in turn help with driving errands afterward. I look forward to both exciting new adventures and also calming nights with new friends.

It can take some time for me to warm up to others and I am generally very quiet by myself. Company is always welcome though, and I would love to share some stories about Asian culture. My pastime includes reading, making pastries, and yoga. I enjoy nature, taking walks, and going hiking occasionally. It’d be great if we could get to know each other during my stay!

As this is my first time joining the community, I'm a bit uneasy about traveling to a stranger's home (no offense). On the other hand, the host might be unsure of the new tenant as well. I would personally prefer to have a video call or exchange IDs before starting the trip, whichever you're more comfortable with :)

I stayed from September 2025 to March 2026. I came to spend time with animals but found so much more here! The animals were all very sweet and the guests were down to earth. I experienced so many new things staying here. I met many animals I was not familiar with before, and tried gardening, wall painting, horse field maintenance, clearing… read more gutters, cleaning ponds, woodworking, wood burning, event prep, mosaic making, cutting reeds, and so much more. I would definitely come back if I have the time and recommend this place to anyone looking for a versatile experience.

Claudia, the owner of the mill, has such vibrant energy for everything taking place at the mill, be it engaging with the guests, mill maintenance, or animal care. She manages everything in an orderly manner and has a strong sense of responsibility. In addition, she cares deeply about connecting with the people she meets, and we spent a great deal of time together over meals and afternoon dessert.

Konstanze, one of the Büro workers and the first person I met when arriving at the mill. She was always happy to help with any concerns I had and was the type who notices someone struggling and quietly lends a hand. She took on a lot of the responsibilities concerning the guests when she worked at the mill and even during her hours off work. I really enjoyed her presence and hope her new accommodation off the mill was to her liking.

Sara, another Büro worker, has a great sense of humor and always greets with enthusiasm. She is very artistic and has a keen eye for details and aesthetics. She is someone who is knowledgeable about most of things and events happening on the mill. She is very nature-friendly and values the surrounding environment.

The staff, Evelyn, Torsten, Birgit, Sveta, Mira, Joe, and so many others were super down to earth. They are very caring and considerate of different situations us helpers might be in, and the kitchen staff make the best foods ever! All the vegetables, soups, curries, and cakes!!!! Every day is a bliss with what they whip up :) They are also locals who can tell you a lot about the surrounding area.

Many helpers I worked along with became great friends as well, most of them are from different countries and it was fun learning about the various cultures. Lena especially became a good friend. She was a long-term employee and also the main helper with the animals before me. Aside from showing me the ropes when I first arrived, I enjoyed working alongside her, and we shared many similar views on various topics, including our love for animals.

The animals were super nice, and honestly what I miss the most after leaving. The cats Janie and Tabby love cuddling, as long as they are not napping, and every movement they make just scream of cuteness!!!! They are also great hunters and might bring back a mouse or bird if they are adventurous. The ducks, now a new generation after the last pair being nabbed by foxes, wander around together. The chickens are always curious and run over when we enter their fenced area . They sometimes lay eggs, and it’s always something to look forward to in the morning. The three horses are adorable!!! I have not taken care of horses before, but learning about their habits and behavior is such fun. They are huge compared to us and could still be dangerous if one is not familiar, but they really are sweethearts that would never try to hurt us deliberately. They are like kndergarteners as they try to fight over food, only on a bigger scale. Benny is the dog from the owners, he has been on a less friendly streak as of late, though most of it is due to his hypersensitivity and anxiousness to strangers. After becoming closer, he is definitely the most adorable dog ever. I was happy to able to walk him from time to time during my off time.

I wish everyone well at the mill, and long for the day I come back to visit again!
