    Description

    Hello you!

We are a school for deaf children with ages from 4 up to around 19. We are a private boarding school for people, who neither speak nor hear. Right now, there are around 85 children and 10 employees who work as teachers and or translaters, mostly live with the children on the compound. So the employees take care 24/7 of the children and are always available. The project owner is a priest, who lived and worked 7 years as Priest in Germany, but is now again in Uganda. The school is placed in a village near to the city Mityana and was found in 2005 and goes from "baby class" to primary 7. It is quiet difficult to compare the classes to other schools, because there are many children who where just found with 15 years, somewhere in the village and has to start now learning the sign language. So in which class do we put a 15 year old kid without any school experience? The children do not have any knowledge of any language when they come to school, that means they have to learn sign language first, as their "mother language" and with the sign language they have to learn english. You can image how difficult it ist for them to learn english based on the sign language, but they do learn! The children are like every other children, they just communicate differently. When you reach there, they will teach you very well and lovely how to communicate with the sign language and it should be clear, that you need to learn the language in the first days at least to communicate the most simple things. Teaching is as well possible with only a few words of sign language, but the better you speak it, the better for everyone. All the Teachers speak english and sign language, depart from ugandan languages.
It should be clear, that a relation to a child is not allowed at all. If there are any signs of a relation between a volunteer and a student, we will immediatly react to that. But you do not need to be scared to play and enjoy your freetime with the kids!
The teachers and people at the school will be showing you around, introduce you to everything and are there for you to talk with, but you should be an independet person, that can also manage on its own.
How is the daily routine during the week?
School starts at 8am and goes until 10am, where we all, teachers and students eat Porrige. At 11am we start again until 1pm. Then you are free to join the food which is everyday provided for the children, Posho and Beans or you just eat something else. These two meals are free for you. Dinner you have to buy/cook for yourself. Do not get scared, for less than 1 Euro, you can eat well! After lunch, at 2pm school starts again and finishes at 3.20pm. After that, most of the children usually go play netball and football at a sportsfield around the corner. The children eat at 6pm supper. Around 7.30pm many children meet again in one room, to learn the most important for them until 9pm. At 9, they go in their dorms. Your daily duty is finished after 3.20pm. On weekends you are free, but as well welcomed to do something with the kids. On sundays, the kids go to church. If you need to go somewhere while school time, no worries, just talk to the teachers. The first week you might just learn the sign language and join the classes, to get to know everything, after that you are welcomed to teach and support in any way. Methods in Africa can be different to those you know, you can talk with the teachers about everything and discuss with them, but please respect the culture and do not think you know how it should be, because there are many different ways in life. There are different religions represented at school, so please only apply if you respect everyone.

You can learn many things at this place. You will get to know real village life in Uganda, with only a few stores where you can buy the most important things, but for real shopping of other things, you can drive for around 6000 Ugandan Shilling to and from Mityana town. That means you will get to know to live basic, like all the people around you live as well. You will figure out, that Uganda is quite a different place for schools then the places you might know at your home. So yes, it can be an adventure and you might have some different issues to think about then in your common life. Poverty is a big part of the life in Uganda, you will see children looking for food and you have to deal with it. You will learn to deal with many situations. You will learn different type of Ugandan food to cook on your own, with a tiny but really nice and cheap stove. You learn english, Luganda and the sign language if you are willing to. The sign language is by the way really easy to learn and to reach a good level of communication. You will learn how to clean by your hands in a really proper way. And how to deal with children with disablities.

    Hébergement

You will have your own accomondation inside of the school terrain. You will have two rooms, so it will be enough for a matress, a cooking place with some chairs and a small cabin where you can wash yourself. Men and women toilets and showers are on the School compound which are shared. Everything is very simple but enough if you do not have to high expectations.

You do not have to pay for accomondation as well as breakfast and lunch. For dinner you have to organize your own food, which is quite easy and cheap. You will not earn any many as a volunteer at the school.

In your freetime you can visit Mityana, which is 10 minutes by boda, that is the usual way to move in Uganda. In around one hour, you will reach by bus taxi to the capital city Kampala. Transport is generally very cheap in Uganda, so it is quiet easy to move around. There are national parks, rain forest activities and so many things you can do in your freetime. The teachers are always there for a nice talk, teaching you how to cook and wash clothes by hands or any questions and needs you have.
