Description
Located in Battambang Province of Cambodia, our project is a social enterprise that provides innovative education programs such as Khmer General Education National Program ( Kindergarten to Grade 6 ) and English Training Courses, Computer classes, Entrepreneurship Training Program (ETP) and more to underprivileged students in villages of Cambodia.

"Our mission is to enhance educational opportunities in Cambodia by implementing sustainable, community-driven initiatives. We aim to bridge the gap between rural and urban education through innovative programs, dedicated partnerships, and a commitment to nurturing lifelong learners who can thrive in a rapidly changing world."

You will get in touch with happy and playful kids that are curious about your life and experiences and don't be surprised when you're asked about your personal life which some westerners would think it's not necessary.

English, Chinese and computer skills have become a " must-have" skill in order to get a decent job in Cambodia .

Unfortunately, learning these languages is very time consuming and complicated for most students due to the its complexities and differences of structures compared to our mother language.

On the another hand, foreign and national schools, which considered to be more effective in these developing these fields of skills , are only available in the city and are only affordable for the rich children.

Your presence in our school will create an international learning environment which will give more opportunities to our students practice their listening, speaking and gain confidence from sharing experiences and life stories to different nationalities.

You will be assisting our existing classes together with our Cambodian main class teachers.

We offer :
1- A private room with a single bed (single person) and a double bed (for couple), (Wifi access available 24/7)
2- Shared bathroom in the house, equiped with water heater and a separate toilet.
3- 3 meals per day ( Vegan available ). Smokers are allowed but have to smoke outside of our school for obvious reasons. You will be living directly with our family in the school compound.

I was introduced to this school by a UK girl named Phoebe I met while I was travelling in Vietnam. I volunteered for three weeks during the month of August 2024. I don't usually leave reviews unless there's something negative to say, which is why I had put this one off for so long, but now after three months of my time there I've decided to write… read more a review because I really feel they deserve it, and because I miss them, everyone from the lovely kids to the charismatic teachers, as well as the four charming members of the family who owns the school.

Since I first arrived, they took me into their house and made me feel at home, as though I were an additional family member. The house is located inside the school grounds, so as soon as you wake up early in the morning you get to hear the schoolchildren playing, laughing and running right outside your room. Be warned: you will be surrounded by kids from sunrise to sunset every single day. Some people hate this, others love it. I would imagine that if you are considering volunteering in a school you would hopefully be the kind who loves being around kids all the time. If that's the case you will greatly enjoy your time at the school. I know I did.

You will have to teach classes in the morning, afternoon and evening (~6 hours per day) during the week, and weekends will be off. They will usually give you a lot of room to be creative during classes, so make sure to prepare something educational while at the same time fun in order to keeps the kids engaged and entertained. What I did is I made them play a lot of games like Simon Says, Hangman, Stand up Sit down, chain stories, etc. TIP: search online for fun and easy ESL activities you could do with them.

When I wasn't teaching classes, I enjoyed going for walks around the village, as well as playing and running around with the kids during recess. I loved how nice and smiley everyone in this village were, so much so that when they saw me walking next to the road they would sometimes even offer me a ride on their bikes. Some key places you should definitely visit are the temples, the church, and the public schools that you will find right next to the temples. There's also the city of Battambang which is about one hour away by motorbike. Either Excellence or one of the teachers will be happy to take you there on the weekend if you ask.

I think it's incredibly admirable what Excellence and his family have achieved with this school, and the fact that they have prioritised the children in their community over their own personal benefit, by e.g. selling their family car in order to buy a playground for the school kids to play in. I was so moved and humbled by their efforts that on my last day I decided to donate to them, so that I too could take a small part in benefiting the adorable children who come to this great school.

Last but not least, I would like to give a special mention to Miss Maya, one of the teachers at this school. Actually I would love to commend every single one of the teachers because they were all honestly so kind, enthusiastic and you could really see how much they loved what they were doing and the kids they were teaching. But Maya is the only one whose name I can spell and confidently remember 😅. One of the things I loved about Maya is how she would always ask her children the question, "Are you happy?". Everyone would then answer vigorously and in unison: "YEEEEESSS!" That made my day every time. I have since incorporated this question in my own routine teaching kids, as for me there's nothing better in life than witnessing a happy child, and nothing more rewarding than being a contributor to that happiness.

The host, Excellence, and his family are extremely kind and generous people. You can learn a lot from Excellence about his vision for the school - and the wider village - and his experience working for 20 years in an NGO. I spent many evenings talking with the family and listening to their stories. Their two sons are very sweet and funny - they… read more taught me a lot about Cambodian history, and wanted to discuss English football players at great lengths! During the three weeks I spent there, I felt very welcomed and comfortable staying with such kind people. The family live on school property, so I felt very much immersed in the community. There are two full-time teachers that also live on school property who are so warm, welcoming, helpful, and positive; on one of the weekends I spent there, we took the older students on a school trip, swimming in a waterfall and picking Rambutan on a fruit farm... this was such a highlight for me! I worked 6 hours a day: 2 in the morning, 2 in the afternoon, and 2 in the evening. The students of the school are genuinely the most enthusiastic, friendly, warmhearted, and well-behaved students I have ever worked with. They are all very open to learning English. In many lessons that I taught or assisted with, I could feel their passion and commitment to the subject. The school provides lessons to a wide range of ages, from approximately 2 to 17 years old, and I taught the full range of ages and abilities: in some lessons I was singing and dancing 'wheels on the bus', and in others I was teaching more complex grammar structures. If you are coming here to teach, in most cases, and especially at the start, the main Cambodian teachers will give you a lot of guidance in how they usually teach their lessons, so I followed their lead in most cases, but was also given the freedom to teach in my own way on many occasions as well. I feel very lucky to have had such a positive and worthwhile experience volunteering at this school, and would recommend any one to come and stay here!

In terms of my own comfort: I was provided with three delicious meals a day, plus free access to water, soda, coffee and snacks. I had full internet access. If you can ride semi-automatic motorbikes, you can borrow theirs. The room is super comfortable and practical, with a fan and mosquito net. The family were also very helpful in organising transport to and from Battambang city, Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.
