Rainbow Lodge is an off-grid, 22 hectare nature reserve in Central Portugal. Situated at the foothills of the Serra da Estrela Natural Park and surrounded by stunning mountains, our project is grounded in ecological farming, living on and off the land, and facilitating the transition to higher forms of authentic living.
Our integrative approach combines living in conscious community, eating and drinking the highest quality food and water, working on sustainable ecological projects, and having the time and space for your own personal development. Rainbow Lodge has a strong yet open spiritual focus.
We have plans for 2022 to create extra outdoor facilities using Eco build techniques...from a barn for our goats, volunteer accommodation, compost toilets, and outdoor kitchen for our community. So if you have some knowledge and skills in eco building with round wood then that would be perfect!
Daily tasks include herding goats that need milking, we make our own cheese and yoghurt. We have sheep and small pigs. We have chickens & ducks producing organic eggs and an organic garden for fruit, vegetables and herbs. There's also a family of 6 friendly dogs and 3 cats that keep us entertained, so a must for animal lovers!
You need to be relatively fit and able bodied to walk the goats for a couple of hours early morning or evening. The animal and bird shelters need to be cleaned once a week.
Working in the Permaculture garden involves planting, weeding, and harvesting depending on the time of year. All of this produce is processed and stored for the Community's use throughout the year.
Other tasks include land clearing and landscaping.
We live and work in community. Breakfast is self service and and we take turns cooking the lunch and evening meal to be shared in the main strawbale house. Meals are mainly vegetarian but we can cater for most dietary requirements.

We have two caravans for volunteers that are currently occupied. But we have two man tents, with mattresses and warm bedding. There are plenty of spots to park up your campervan.
The shared strawbale house is available during the day for indoor bathroom and kitchen.
There is no public transport near our location. We tend to visit the local shops by car once or twice a week. We are a 10 minute walk from the nearest village and cafe.
You can get a coach for 12 euros from Porto to get to Celorico Beira in 2.5 hours or from Lisbon in 4 hours. We can collect you from the coach station.
