We spent ~4 Weeks at Joanne and Milo in May 2024, and had a great time there. It was our first workaway experience and I can't imagine a better Host for the first time. We received a very friendly and cheerful welcome. Milo took a lot of time to show us the place and tell us what awaits us in the next few weeks. He even went on a joyride with us, as it was a very sunny day with good sight. The house is very outside, but this wasn't a problem. The view and the nature are amazing, and whenever we wanted to go on a trip, Milo and Joanne offered us transport. At least to the next bus stop. It was the first time I had the chance to go on a journey with a public bus which feels like rollercoaster - for just a few euros :D.
We did a lot of different work to wake the parts from the garden up which were still in hibernation. We got rid of lots of weeds, harvested some vegetables, planted a lot of salad, sowed, pricked, set up old and new paths and beds. And we strimmed a lot, I loved it. The Garden is wonderful and very large, with so many different regions and well thought out. Usually, we could get up and start working whenever we want, which was great, as this makes the whole time feel like holiday and there were no pressure about anything.
The family is really authentic and we enjoyed their company. Most of the time we had dinner all together, which felt very good, and makes us becoming part of the family more and more. It was a good time to get to know each other, and also time to practice english a lot, which works very well as they all spoke very clear and not too fast. The meals they prepared were delicious, and they nearly always provided a veggie version to us.
When we were there, they had a very busy time, but nevertheless there was enough time to talk to us, teach us, and to make jokes with each other. We could also feel, how thankful they were, about all the help they got. They have a very positive attitude, so we could ask any question and making mistakes was not a problem.
We wish we could have stayed longer. Sadly we had to leave when we really arrived at this place and got warm, at least it feels that. It is a wonderful project they raised there. Hopefully we can come back some time in the future to visit you!
Best wishes

We had such an incredible, inspiring and fun time with Milo and Joanne, their kids and their two dogs and cat! It feels hard to sum it all up. And also a LOT of laughs with their kids, which was a lot of fun. They have the two sweetest little dogs and a cuddly cat who we just totally fell in love with (and who we already miss!)
They have so much experience and wisdom to share - if you want to go and learn, do it!! - and they are also really generous hosts, offering to take us to nearby places for us to experience the local area (which is spectacular. We HIGHLY recommend going to Dunfanaghy and doing the walk up to Horn Head on a clear day! And also the trad music night at the Shamrock pub in nearby Falcarragh)
We also really enjoyed the work in the gardens. We felt it was diverse enough that we never got bored, and also definitely didn't feel overworked. We got a lot done during our volunteer hours there, but also felt like we had a really nice, relaxed pace with flexibility on when we could start our day.

When staying with Milo & Joanne you feel like a part of the family as you become a regular part of the household dynamic. It was really neat to be in a Gaelic-speaking part of Ireland, two of their kids speak Gaelic and it was super cool to hear! Milo & Joanne are very kind, generous, and extremely hard-working people. Both of them have extensive experience having workawayers so they know how to help you acclimate to the place and tasks. For example on our first day, Milo took a lot of time to explain lots of details on the house and other things which we should know.
The place you will be staying is detached and private from the house. It has a heater and really good wifi which made for a great place to get some alone time when we needed it.

The experience we made from them was really special and we want to say thank to Milo, Joanne and their guys for the welcome!
They are very nice and genuine people, always ready to meet us for every request (such as driving to different part) and to teach something new in the garden even after some small "disaster"... 😁
It was really great to share this six weeks with you, we will remember it forever! 💚
The house is located 3 km from the bus stop that allows you to get to the main cities. There are several companies, the service is good even if little expensive.
There are no great attractions in Gortahork, but there is a chance to take great walks or even walk to Falcarah (the nearby village) to have a good beer at the Shemrock pub! 🍻
Must visit Tory Island! The small island that you will often see from a distance.
It is something wonderful that left us a beautiful memory for the view you have with the cliffs overlooking the ocean!
Also Horn Head on the Wild Atlantic Way, another visit that cannot be missed, as well as Mount Errigal!
For our first experience we could not really expect better! Donegal and this family have made us fall in love and it wasn't easy to leave them...
But the promise is to return. We have new friends here in Ireland! 😊🍀 Best wishes from Italy!Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

The kids are so so lovely and we spent a lot of time playing, surfing, exploring, cooking and sharing meals. Lennon delighted us playing his banjo, Bethany is curious and always has something ingenius to say and Lindsay May surprised us with her art. It was so sad when we had to go.
About the tasks, there were many things to do, painting, weeding, cooking, harvesting, planting, and maintenance of paths. We also were part of the reception of course groups but the tasks were never so hard. Johanne and Milo always asked us about what we'd like to do and they left us enough free time. Milo and Joanne were very flexible in regard to the working hours, so I had enough time to study (since I was still enrolled in a few courses at my University in Switzerland), do Yoga daily, or just enjoy the amazing view from the living room drinking a cup of coffee and petting Buster (their lovely dog) sleeping in the armchair next to me.
I loved working in the garden (watering, planting, transplanting, seeding, and weeding mainly at that time). Depending on your task, the work can be physically demanding, but there are always lovely tea breaks. Some tasks, on the other hand, are absolutely meditating (like seeding or transplanting) and rewarding (especially when I actually got to eat the Spinach I planted weeks before). Joanne and Milo are incredibly hard-working people, a great team, and they put a lot of love and passion into their work, the development of the garden, and moreover, in their vision of helping educate people about more sustainable ways of life - just truly inspiring!
If you look for an experience where you learn about plants and our environment, where you can spend time with a lovely and vivid family, where you can enjoy nature and the calm countryside - this is the perfect place to go.
I will certainly come back and visit my Irish family as soon as possible and send all hugs and love to Donegal.Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

FIRST OF ALL SORRY FOR THIS DELAY!!!!!!
It's been a little bit more than a month since we left Joanne and Milo's place and our lives have changed a lot!
It's difficult how to describe our experience with you, because it has been so natural and easy to live with your family that it seems it has just been one more step in our adventure in Ireland,
… read more but it wasn't!! :)!
We spent a little bit more than a month living with this family and thank them we feel we have discovered the real Ireland and the kidness of its people. We still remember the first days there, when we first met the kids and they welcame us playing their instruments after dinner and telling us what they liked and their favourites things like dinosaurs for Lennon, monkeys for Bethany and Harry Potter for Lindsay May. :D
We got used very early to their day to day lifes and it's been because of the good enviroment you can feel in this house. Even if their routines go fast, they always have moment for you and to sit down together for tea, coffee or some toasts :)
So we early start to work with them and to help them in their projects. Sometimes with Joanne in the garden: planting, weeding or just tidying up with her, or some others helping Milo with the building works. It has never been too much work and they always asked us if we felt good and if it was alright for us. That is really something to apreciate!!!
So, we have not only learnt a lot about gardening and how to enjoy in the garden but also we have had the opportunity of sharing with Joanne several of her events involving permaculture, water care or human rights. They always counted on us for anything they did.
To sum up, we have just felt like at home and like with our own family. Thank you so much for everything, for treating us just like part of the team, for teaching us and showing us around in Donegal (now we think we have known one of the most beatiful regions in Ireland!!)
We think we have been very lucky with you, so we could discover just a diferent way of life in such a homely place!!
You know you are VERY VERY VERY VERY WELCOME in Spain anytime you want and of course in Dublin if you ever want to leave the peaceful Gortahork for a while to enjoy another Spanish dinner ;)

The house and garden are located in a beautiful and tranquil area surrounded by mountains and green. It is enjoyable to work in the garden and see the nature. I did some sowing, weeding, pruning and transplanting. I also helped move stuffs from the house to the storage room for the ongoing projects. I did some house work like dishwashing, bringing in firewood, emptying the compost and setting table. Joanne and Milo gave me clear instructions about work, and they helped me a lot.
They are passionate about promoting of organic gardens. They share this environmentally friendly lifestyle with everyone. They try to raise environmental awareness and give education about food to make the Earth better and more sustainable. It is so good to know people like them are saving the Earth.
They are a family of 6. The family vibe is very warm. Joanne and Milo are two of the best parents who do their best to give the children the best! They treat children with love, patience and the best education. Lindsaymei is a baker, artist, potterier, b-box girl, musician, and cook (the pasta for my last dinner is yummy!) Lennon is a very good mannered, polite and gentle boy who plays music and has lots of knowledge about history and dinosaurs. Bethany is a brilliant unicyclist and has the most craic and energy in the family and brings so many laughters and happiness, and she sometimes became an unicorn. Besides, she makes arguably the best scrambled egg in the world. Buster is a dog which likes sleeping, asking for food, eating, and sleeping. You will enjoy sitting by the fire with him. Milo is a great father and husband who has many great ideas and do them right away, and he plans the projects around the house and is always like go-go-go. Joanne knows everything about gardening and is very busy with her business, but she still takes very good care of everyone in the family.
I had very good time with this lovely family. I recommend this family to everyone especially those who want a warm family vibe with lots of love. If you are not sure whether to have a family or not, you will find your answer from this family.

I have nothing but praise and gratitude towards this beautiful family. They welcomed me right into their scenic countryside home and provided me with the best first workaway experience I could ever have imagined. I worked hard (but never too much) on fun and different projects daily. And when I wasn't working, Joanne and Milo were more than happy

While staying with them, I enjoyed cheery and rambunctious family dinners (with delicious and varied food I might add), long walks in the countryside, and all around great craic with these folks and their children. It was truly a one-of-a-kind stay and I'll remember it fondly for years to come. I absolutely recommend this place and family to fellow workawayers. You will not be disappointed.

I can't thank this wonderful family enough for the beautiful four weeks I spent with them! Joanne, Milo and their lovely children made me feel at home immediately. I had plenty of free time and the work was basically sowing seeds, weeding beds, clearing out some rooms - the work was never to hard and always fun, as there are always other volunteers to talk with :) You can also learn very much about gardening as Joanne is giving gardening classes and has a great knowledge about horticulture and permaculture.
I also had great fun baking, watching movies and playing with the kids :)
There was always plenty of lovely, organic food!
