Feedback for my Workaway Experience
I spent four unforgettable months on this beautiful island, surrounded by nature, peace, and a truly special atmosphere. The place is full of life – so much space, so much green, it’s just magical.
During my time there, I took care of the animals and helped with all kinds of tasks. I went fishing with nets,

The host was incredibly kind and welcoming, always respectful and supportive. The food was amazing, and the vibe of the place made me feel at home from day one. I learned a lot, grew stronger – both physically and mentally – and left with memories I’ll never forget.
I can truly recommend this place to anyone who loves nature, animals, and real, grounded living. Thank you for everything – it was a top-tier experience.

Rike was very patient with all the animals on the farm. In the end she had tamed one of the wild sheep and her lamb.and waited every day to be cuddled by Rike. She named het ATTA which means the leader of the herd. Rike also worked a lot with my two wool pigs Thelma and Louise and she even learned them how to sit when she gave them a cinnamon roll. Fishing with Rike was also gret fun and we could catch some nice sea trouts.
If you have a chance to have Rike as your workawayer I can give her my best and warm recommendation.

Hallo everyone, my workaway stay with Birte was an amazing experience. I stayed on Straumsøy for about 3 months, yet it felt like barely two weeks passed by. I’ve learned a lot during my stay; from preparing a fish after catching it to giving birthing assistance to a goat.

Birte and her family (and friends) are all super kind and welcoming. They always made sure i feel at home, taught me many things and introduced me to the amazing world of Norwegian desserts.
Birte is a great cook and we’ve shared some amazing meals.
The work was never too much. Naturally, on some days there was a bit more to do than on others, but there was always time to put up the feet and enjoy some (rare) Norwegian sunburn. At first i thought i would struggle a bit to remember the things that had to be done, but after a few days of getting to know the routine of the feeding and cleaning that was not at all a problem anymore.
Since my stay was during the summer months i got to experience some really cool things like the sheep and goats getting their lambs, the arrival of the new pigs and the shearing of the sheep.
All in all I had the best time on Birtes little paradise island and I hope I will return some day:)
Thanks for everything Birte! Miss you!!

My stay at Birtes island was the biggest blessing. I stayed on the island for nearly 7 weeks (3 of them completely alone) and I enjoyed every single day. At first I was concerned if I would feel lonely the days Birte had to work, but I was always surrounded by lovely animals and Birte checked on me every day by phone. I also had some great company

Birtes animals are super friendly and fun to be around. My tasks mostly contained of feeding them and cleaning their cages, but also some smaller tasks like removing leaves, repairing things or taking down parts of the pig cage.
Birte always made sure to find a great balance between working on the island and doing some activities on my days off. We went to her hunting cabin outside of Bergen, where I went on a beautiful hike, and her skiing cabin in Geilo to experience what skiing feels like in norway. ;) I was also allowed to sleep in their apartment in Bergen and to spend some time in this beautiful city. On top of that, I was lucky enough to get to know her family when they invited me for a birthday party. I was received with open arms, and they were super friendly and heartwarming.
I can only express the biggest THANK YOU to Birte and Rune for this unique experience. I had such a wonderful time, and I miss the island already so much. I definitely don`t take it for granted how much you have done for me, and I really hope to see you again some day.
So for every workawayer reading this: I highly recommend a stay on straumsoy gard! :)

Fist of all, thank you very much for everything Birte. We had a wonderful experience. We stayed on the wonderful and beautiful Island for around 2 months in the Winter. We would definitely recommend a Stop at this beautiful place on earth.
And there are even more highlights. Driving a boat over the fjorden alone or together with Birte, the Trip to their Ski Cabin in Geilo the meetup with Rebecca (another Workawayer from Germany) or experiencing the farm life on a snowy island are just some of the best Moments. Straumsøy is a must visit for every Workawayer.

I spent around a month on the island and found it to be a paradise. When I'd arrived there were baby goats who loved to cuddle and lots of animals to spend time with including chickens, peacocks, goats, sheep, pigs, ducks, rabbits and many wild birds.
The island itself is beautiful, and lovely to walk around or go for a cold dip in the fjord. It
… read more is a very peaceful place where you won't see anyone else (except if there is another workawayer) so it is perfect if you are looking for a bit of peace and tranquillity. They taught me how to drive the boat so when I was on the island on my own I was able to drive into the fjord and explore the area, reading my book in the water.
The work is very straightforward, feeding the animals and cleaning their areas in the morning and then a few other projects dotted about depending on what needs to be done at the time. It is a small farm but as is always the case, there is always something to be done (from fixing fences to working in the vegetable garden). I never felt overworked and there was always a lot of time for me and the other workawayer to enjoy the island in our own ways.
Birte and Rune are very kind people who are more than happy to share their knowledge, lifestyle and island with you. They are always available for any questions and are really friendly and easy to get along with. Birte made us traditional Norwegian pancakes with her homemade jam and she was always doing everything she could to make sure we were happy and comfortable. They even let me stay in their beautiful apartment when I was in Bergen!
All in all a lovely experience working with lovely people, I wish them all the best in the future.

Birte granted me the freedom to organise my own working day and in fact, the work was always a daily fun, every now and then there were even new tasks, making every day a new one.
I had some unforeseen events that made me go earlier than expected and at the island I stayed for almost one month, would definitely have stayed much longer if i, unfortunately, didn't have to leave for personal reasons. Birte and Rune were all the time comprehensive and understanding and gave me all the support to go and leave Strømsøy, and for that i'm eternally thankful.
The experience, the island, the hosts, everything surpassed my expectations and only reasons to praise accompany my memories, from day one i was learning and i left the farm as a transformed individual. We spent two weeks in July on Birte’s farm. Our everyday tasks were feeding the animals, cleaning the barn, the chicken house and the road. Other work included tearing out the grass from the road and filling up the holes with rocks, picking berries, repairing the fence where two pigs stay and carrying the bags with animal food. The work with
… read more animals was amazing, because Birte has a wide range of them so we learned how to approach each of them differently. Also, the small goats really liked attention and us cuddling them, so it was always fun being with them. We worked 5 hours a day, and also in the weekends, even though it wasn’t as much as throughout the week.
In the free time Birte taught us how to fish with nets and from the boat. She also let us use her sauna and made us some really delicious dinners (for example the deer that she caught by herself, which we were really grateful for). We felt welcomed by the family. Birte’s husband Rune helped us with transportation, which was really sweet. They also let us spend one night in their apartment in Bergen, so we had an easier traveling further in Norway.
It was an amazing experience, thank you so much for everything and say hi to the animals!

I stayed at the farm for about 6 weeks. It was my first workaway experience and it was amazing. Birte and his husband Rune welcomed me and my friend very warmly. Before meeting in person we facetimed a couple times and Birte answered all our questions, even about what clothes we should bring with us.
Once at the farm they gave us all necessary
… read more equipment for working. Birte was around many weekends and she showed us how to do everything, since we were her first workawayers and prior to us she was doing everything herself.
We had daily chores like feeding the animals, collecting eggs and maintaining the barn and the henhouse clean. The rest of the time we focused on a more long-term proyect, which at the time was to make prettier the trail around the farm that had grass grown over it, so we pulled it out and added more little stones. We worked about 5 hours a day, 5 days a week and on our days off one of uf just had to feed the animals, which was a quick chore (since usually we were the only people in the island).
The experience was amazing and I got to experience what it is like to live on a farm which I had always wanted to do. Also it was a very inmersive norwegian experience since I also got to practice my norwegian with Birte whenever she was around, and we would have meals together, even with the rest of the family that came to visit and always eat amaaaazing traditional norwegain food. Both my friend and I are chefs and let me tell you if you get a homemade meal from Birte that's the best norwegian food you'll try.

In January I stayed at Strømsøy for four weeks. I’ve been there with another workawayer from Switzerland. We didn’t know each other before but we had a great time together. Once we stayed at Birte‘s appartement in Bergen for 3 day‘s to discover the city. We hiked on top of one of the mountains around Bergen, sadly it was really foggy but it was a funny hiking tour anyways.

It would certainly have been better if it had been explained to us on site, but unfortunately that wasn't possible at the time. Nevertheless, we hope that our stay there was helpful. Apart from that, we tried fishing and managed to catch 2 fish 😅 We had an exceptional time and will miss the goats in particular!
The guest house we stayed in quickly felt like home and we had everything we needed there! We travelled to Lindås a few times for shopping and also spent 2 days in Birte's flat in Bergen.
