Description
Help needed in September 2022 and possibly longer.
We are looking for a mature (older people particularly welcome) couple of people who could come and help us. Non-smokers only please. Kiwis and Aussies particularly welcome!!
We are a British couple who moved to France years ago to renovate an old building and have holiday lets. The holiday lets are up and running and the house is the old Mayor's office of the village which has finishing jobs rather than renovation to do. We are avid 'home exchangers' who really enjoy experiencing an area as a local. We have had housesitters and hosted workawayers for the past 7 years. It's been a great experience and we love having fun and interesting people to stay. We've met some fab people from all over the globe and have kept in touch with many of them. In the future we look forward to being house sitters and workaway helpers ourselves.
The work:
This depends how much of it we get done before you arrive. There are 2 main areas that we need help with : Finishing off jobs in the house, and gardening.
In the house there are large jobs like replacing a window, and a door, maybe even making a door, possibly installing a ceiling, to small ones like wallpaper and decorating, and possibly installing skirting boards. In the garden there is landscaping like filling an existing breeze block wall with cement, laying a gravel patio and finishing the pergola, laying pavers on another patio , possibly building a gabion wall and laying stone steps, and actual plant gardening like cutting back overgrowth, weeding, moving plants and planting a new bed etc. Plenty of satisfying tasks to get our teeth into which will all make a big impact.
The ideal would be a month's duration from the beginning of September with the possibility of extending. It has the satisfying feeling of seeing a job to completion, and the impact it makes. But if you are only available for a week or two, then please do chat with us.
We are flexible on the work arrangements. It could be done in a block of days, or a few hours a day, or a mixture of the two, allowing you the time to explore the region and its volcanos, chateaux, pretty villages, markets, vide greniers etc.
The area:
We live in the old school of a pretty rural village deep in the 'real' France which has remained pretty untouched . If you want to spend your time with French people and practicing your French, rather than a touristy region, then this is for you!! It is an excellent area for off road biking or cycling through forests. Good walks, some of the circular ones go straight past our front door! If you like flea markets, and especially really reasonably priced ones, then this is most definitely the area for you!
We live in a rural mountainous part of France with no public transport so your own vehicle would be necessary. There are lots of small villages around and tiny winding roads, but also facilities like supermarket, bank, restaurants and cafes, museums, market etc in our local town of Ambert.
About us:
We are in our 50s. Before we settled in France we used to travel, and loved meeting new people and learning of their cultures. We spent quite some time on Kibbutzim and a Moshav in Israel as volunteers, and have visited quite a few countries by motorcycle. We love our food and getting to taste new recipes is always a delight. Eating out in our part of France is not easy for vegetarians so we tend to go out less much than we did when living in GB.Types d'aide et opportunités d'apprendre

We live in a very interesting part of France. Quite untouched by foreign tourists and the French tourists are only just beginning to discover it. Flea markets and brocantes with very reasonable prices. Pretty local towns and villages with tiny winding roads. Very good off road cycling and walking routes which go straight past our door. Lovely chateaux in the area as well as interesting museums and fabulous scenery. We really enjoy sharing travel stories, good company, good food .....
Aide
We like practically minded workawayers who don't mind getting 'stuck in', can use their own initiative and have a 'Can Do' attitude in helping unsupervised.
Mature people very welcome. Kiwis and Australians particularly welcome. Please no young inexperienced people on their own.

Sometimes we will be working together as a team, and sometimes you will be on the task alone but we are always around to help should you need it. We look forward to meeting you!!Langues parlées

You will have your own house opposite us as your own retreat! It is usually on airbnb, so fully furnished and comfortably set up for guests. This means your own kitchen for preparing your own meals. It saves you needing to be vegetarian for the duration to fit in with us, but we would be delighted to share meals and evenings together some of the time. We will of course provide a stipend for your food.
