This Workaway falls into the category of family cultural exchange. The most important things in this situation are organisation of the host, facilities, enthusiasm for a cultural exchange and not taking advantage. Birgitte and family are great at all of the above.

I stayed with Birgitte and Henrik for 5 weeks at their beautiful home in Hillerod. This was my first workaway experience and I could not have asked for better hosts. Freya was such a joy to hang out with. I would practice violin with her when she got home from school then some days we would play games or cards together. She would always beat me! I was also able to join in Freya’s orchestra while I was there and even play in one of her concerts. Definitely a highlight of the trip! It was Birgitte’s birthday while I was there and the whole family made me feel so welcomed during all the birthday festivities.
The work was very easy - cleaning the house and walking their dog, Felix. Birgitte did a great job of explaining everything clearly, and making sure I knew what had to be done. Everyone spoke great English, so it made communicating very easy.
I had plenty of free time to explore on the weekends and in the afternoons. The town they live in is very quaint and their house is in walking distance to shops, cafes, and the train station which made getting around super easy. They also live close to one of the most beautiful castles in Denmark where I would walk their dog. Great location!
This workaway experience far exceeded my expectations! I only wish I could have stayed longer. I now feel like I have a second family in Denmark, and I hope to return and visit one day!
Best wishes to you all and thank you Birgitte, Henrik, Freya and Lea for making this such a memorable experience for me!

I am looking at doing a PhD in Copenhagen so wanted the opportunity to get to know the area and the people before committing to an extended amount of time here. There isn't room here to talk about all the fascinating things to do in this part of Denmark (five weeks was not enough time to see it all) but Birgitte will have lots of suggestions for you if you are lucky enough to get a workaway here.
The work is mostly very basic cleaning and walking Felix (their adorable dog). This is all clearly explained and typically took me about 3.5 hours to complete each day, so I was often finished before lunch and had the afternoons to myself. I loved my time with Birgitte and her lovely family! My 3 1/2 week stay was in the middle of my three-month trip in Europe, and it was a good break from traveling tirelessly for a month prior in southern Europe and partying endlessly for a month after in Ireland. She is very understanding with other plans you may have and will accommodate you to the best of their ability.
Getting to Copemhagen is extremely easy, just a 45 minute commute, walking to the train station and the train ride. I commuted to the city a few times a week for classes and the family helped me arrange travel with train cards and made sure my school schedule was a priority for me.
The work was mostly cleaning, dusting, mopping, window cleaning, etc. Their lovely dog Felix loves to go for walks too! I occasionally picked up Freya from school and walked her home and got her ready for her skating. I also played violin with her most days for about 10 minutes which was always a highlight of my day.
They have a family dinner every night, and made sure that I felt welcome every night. Even days when I was in the city for classes, Birgitte would make enough food for me to eat when I got home at night. I got to know their extended family as well, cousins and grandparents, and every person made me feel comfortable and happy, and I truly am thankful for everything they did for me. It was extremely difficult saying goodbye, but with how wonderful this family is I know it will not be the last time I see them! I can not recommend this family enough. For your best experience in Denmark, please consider this lovely family! :)Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

I spent five weeks with this family and had such an amazing workaway experience. I was very lucky to be there during the build up to Christmas, which meant that I got to experience a Christmas cookie baking day, an
… read more outing with the family to choose a Christmas tree, a fantastic Danish Christmas party and lots and lots of Christmas songs.
Birgitte and Henrik are such lovely hosts and are both relaxed and easy to talk to and Henrik constantly made me laugh. The work has been structured in such a way that the same jobs are done on certain days each week, such as laundry and cleaning, and other fun jobs are done on the other days such as clearing leaves, baking or wrapping presents in my case as it was Christmas time. This is a great system because it means you can get into your own routine and rhythm. Brigitte is also very open to swapping jobs around to make it easier or more comfortable.
Freya is absolutely delightful and such a sweet and fun child to be around. I really enjoyed playing games, speaking English, practising the violin with her and of course taking lots of crazy selfies :D
Felix, their adorable dog, needs to be walked every day and this was my favourite job as the castle and park are so beautiful that I never got tired of walking around.
There is plenty of free time to go exploring, whether that is to Copenhagen or just around Hillerød but there is lots to see in Copenhagen and a lot of castles or palaces in other towns and cities which are easy to get to on the train.
I would recommend this workaway to everyone as the family are wonderful, the location is great and the work is very manageable.
I could definitely have spent longer here and I hope it is not too long before I can return to Denmark and of course see the family again ;-)Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

I stayed with Birgitte and Henrik for 5 weeks, and I had a wonderful experience being part of their family for those couple of weeks.

Freya was such a lovely girl to play and look after. I would pick her up from school and then walk home with her, do some English work but also lots of playing and colouring. She's so lovely, I would have been happy to stay for longer just to be with her and the family!
Hillerod itself is a lovely town, lots of green space to walk around and plenty of things to see and visit, and it is really easy to get to the centre of Copenhagen by train from Hillerod too!
The house work was a bit more than I expected, but doable, and Birgitte was very insistent that I let her know if it got too much, and made sure I never had to do anything I didn't feel comfortable doing (climbing up high ladders for example.)
Overall, I had a fabulous experience and can't recommend staying with Birgitte and Henrik enough!Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

I voluntereed from middle of May to beginning of July for this family. In the overall I had an excellent experience from many points of view.
Hospitality and family environment: even before arriving I have been made to feel part of the family. Indeed, before my arrival Birgitte wrote me that in my first week there would have been the previous
… read more volunteer that would have moved to another room. In this way I would have stayed in the room for volunteers at the same their bedroom's floor and I would have felt much closer to the family.
As there were lots of celebrations in June, I have always been invited and welcomed. During this month there have been birthday parties, Ditte's graduation, Lea's arrival after a year abroad. These events involved big lunches or dinners with many friends and relatives and I have been treated like another member of the family.
Volunteering time: the duties will never be too hard. If you feel otherwise, still you can freely speak to Birgitte who will find a better solution for both sides.
But keep in mind that your help REALLY makes a consistent difference for this family and you will understand how important it is once you arrive. As well, they are so welcoming and caring that you will carry on any duty with pleasure. This is my personal experience and of course it depends on your attitude, but I believe that they deserve the best, considered they give you their best.
Besides gardening and cleaning, you might take care of Freya, the youngest daughter. She is the sweetest girl I have ever met and you will easily get on with her. Speaking to her in English is a great contribute for the family, so you'd better to be English native or anyway to speak fluently and with English accent.
Free time after volunteering hours: not all days are exactly the same, therefore sometimes it is possible to finish your duties quite early and have a lot of spare time on your own. So, if you'd like to volunteer here, it is very important that you have at least one interest or anyway you are able to find new things to do in order to enjoy yourself in a little town in a new country where getting new friends is not straightforward.
For example the previous volunteers got a convenient discount for the subscription at a nearby gym. During my stay I did not go to this gym because circumstances have been different for me. Basically Birgitte has been so kind and enterprising that at our second dinner she asked me which was my hobby or sport -which is karate-, then just looked for a karate gym on Internet and arranged a trial for two days later on a phone call. At this big sport centre I found nice people who explained the exercises in English only for me and offered me free classes. It was a big success.
Location and connection:
Based on my knowledge gained in these two months, I would say Hillerod is the most beautiful and interesting town in northern Zealand. The city centre is very small and pretty and you will definitely never get tired of walking along the little lake and admiring the famous castle, Frederiksborg Slot.
Also, in few minutes you have access to the forest and to amazing pathways where to run or just walk.
In about 40 minutes you reach the capital and in half an hour by train you can get very nice beaches in the north (yes, in Denmark!) and to Helsingor, the closest Danish city to Sweden.
I have been treated so well by this family that I felt my help was nothing compared to everything they have done for me. They are extremely recommended and I wish them to find always very good volunteers to help.
May I thank you infinite times for your open and sweet heart.
Best wishes to all of you,
Chiara

Hillerod is a beautiful town and a great place to stay as it is close enough to Copenhagen to visit on the weekend but also has its own shopping mall, beautiful parks and Frederiksborg Castle. If you like to exercise there is also a local gym you can easily join. And you will have the chance to walk Felix everyday who is such a sweet dog and enjoys playing hide-and-seek!
The work was easy and flexible. A typical day is spent cleaning/tidying the house for a few hours then walking Felix and helping with other small tasks such as shopping, cooking, picking Freya up or English learning/playing games. Nothing too difficult. I enjoyed spending time with Freya, Lea and Ditte and loved going out for all-you-can-eat Sushi with Ditte in town ☺ Also, visiting the seaside with Birgitte and Freya and sledging (even on the baby slopes!) was great fun. Also, Birgitte is an amazing cook and her food is simply delicious! No doubt you'll be treated to Danish delights and wonderful dinners and can even learn some recipes if you like cooking. We made pasta together and it was great!

I had the pleasure to have my first workaway experience with Birgitte and her family and it couldn't have been better. The family was very nice and the house is in a great location. I spent most of the days vacuuming, cleaning windows, picking up Freya from school, some gardening etc. The work was never too hard. Most of the time I did all of my

The family is very easy-going and they even cooked some traditional food from my country together with me. I really enjoyed my stay in Denmark and can recommend to visit Birgitte and her family. I definetely have to visit them again. :)Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.

Staying with Birgitte and her family was a great first WorkAway experience. They are great people and welcomed me into their family. The house is beautiful and in a great location; next to the park and just 30 minutes by train to Copenhagen.
I spent most of my days cleaning the house (vacuuming, mopping, window washing). Some days I picked up

Birgitte was very flexible with when I worked and what days I took off. It was easy to get the work done in the morning and have the afternoon free.
I look forward to returning to Denmark and visiting the family in the future! Vous pouvez seulement contacter les workawayers avec une adhésion active.
