    Salam!

We are a local institution for people of all ages to learn languages with an emphasis on fun, interactive lessons and genuine cultural exchange! We began our project 5 years ago in the small and humble town of Attaouia, around an hour’s drive from Marrakech. At the moment we are mainly focusing on English, German(we currently have a big demand for German!) and French classes, so if you are a native speaker - or fluent in either - we are super happy to have you. But we are also completely open to other languages - a number of people here have interests and abilities not on the curriculum (Italian especially), and we would be more than happy for you to offer one-to-one classes in languages outside of English and French!

From our town, some of the top sights in Morocco are just one hour’s drive away, and we can organise trips to some incredible nearby locations. The Ouzoud waterfalls, the three valleys, Ourika and the High Atlas trekking ranges, the Imi Nifri caves, or for a longer adventure, the ancient port city of Essaouira and the beautiful fishing town of Imsouane (cost of trips are shared by volunteers). For long stayers (over 1 month), we can also arrange a three day trip to the desert (only the cost of the diesel is shared). Attaouia itself sits just outside the Middle Atlas, a beautiful panorama that will greet you each morning, though best enjoyed from the rooftop at sunset.

Attaouia is small, and can feel extremely remote in comparison to the more well-known and tourist dominated regions of Morocco. However, it is here that you will truly experience the raw and authentic way of Moroccan life and culture as it has been for centuries.

For instance, every Thursday, the huge souk (the second largest in the region) sets up directly in front of the apartment. Even at a glance from outside, you will feel totally immersed in local culture. Farmers gather to sell their produce, such as fruits and vegetables among a dizzying number of livestock. There are scores of tempting food stands with delightful, fresh Moroccan food, and you will find a large variety of fruits and nuts with, of course, our famous dried and fresh dates, as well as a depth of exotic spices and grains.

Wherever you find yourself in town, you will be treated to the sound of the call to prayer echoing out from one of the dozen or so Mosques. The landscape is dominated by ancient land and olive groves stretching out towards Marrakesh and likewise away to the Middle Atlas. If you feel the call to adventure, take a bike for a short ride out and see it all for yourself. You’ll also find a choice of several hamams for cleansing and relaxation, and uncountable cafes to sit with traditional tea or Arabica with local friends.

Please feel free to get in touch with any questions you may have - we have a small team of long-term workers here who would be happy to talk at length about anything and everything you might want to know before joining us.

    Shukran and Ma’salama!

The help we need is student-focused, but if you have any creative ideas for the school building or for education and activities we would love to hear them, too. As a volunteer with us, you’ll mostly be in one-to-one classes throughout the day, helping students of all ages and levels in your native or fluent-level language. These classes are very open, and you can make them entirely focused on the student’s individual needs and suited to their learning style and personality. In the evenings, you’ll be assisting in one of the two-hour classes. Here you can help with anything from pronunciation, useful grammar tips, an introduction to common English / French expressions as well as any applied communication skills. Anybody with a TEFL certificate or any other degrees pertaining to language and teaching will be more than welcome. But for anyone mastering English or French as a first or second language, your presence is also very, very appreciated.

The students are a very motivated and lively bunch of open minded people who are guaranteed to catch your heart very quickly. They are very eager to learn new languages, especially English and French, as they are practically a necessity for better job opportunities. They are extremely good hearted, very respectful and above all a treat to be with. Likewise, our teachers are also very dynamic, committed people. If you would like, they can also help you to get prepared for the lessons, though as the classes are expertly handled and free-flowing you likely won’t find it difficult to settle in! We absolutely welcome your own creative input and ideas concerning teaching techniques to be discussed and applied as well. If you are new to teaching or tutoring, this is the perfect place to put your skills into practice and immerse yourself in an engaging learning environment!

    Hébergement

Accommodation is offered free to our volunteers, and we currently have an apartment which is only 5 minutes walk from the school. We have two shared rooms, WiFi and of course shower/toilet/kitchen facilities.

We are doing our best to fit the flat out with all modern comforts and make everyone feel a little more at home, though we could use a little help still (as well as at the school). So anyone with handyman skills and a hard work ethic is gladly welcome!
At the school, the rooftop is a lovely, sunny space with some plants and chairs - ideal for yoga, meditation, reading and relaxation. For smokers, there is a space both at the apartment and at the school, though we would ask you to smoke away from areas visible to the local children, parents and students.

As for meals, we have many markets nearby where you can get everything you need for home cooking (local friends, students and our longstay workers will be very happy to show you the best places and prices).

There are cafés on almost every street where you can find a full, delicious meal for very little money. Life in town is remarkably inexpensive, and you won’t be spending much to live here either in the short or long term. Moroccan hospitality is famous all over the world for good reason, and it’s here that you’ll likely experience some of the warmest examples of it. So expect to be invited for breakfast, lunch, dinner or coffee at any time! For the volunteer team, we try every Friday to provide a traditional couscous meal gathering as well. If you are interested in learning Arabic, we can also arrange some free classes for you!
