  • Description

We are a small western-style hostel on the sandy shores of Baloho bay on Nias island, combined with a permaculture project. The hostel and permaculture project are still in their early stages, which means lots of exciting building projects and creative ideas! We are situated just 15 to 20 mins from some of the best surfing waves in the world while still central to waterfalls, lush rain-forest valleys, pristine beaches and fish-filled, coral-laden coastline. Nias Culture, unique in all of Indonesia, offers the only active Megalithic culture in all of Asia, hidden in the jungle away from civilization. You can visit beautiful traditional villages, learn about Nias warrior culture, and jump off waterfalls. Or spend your afternoons driving along the coast, through the jungle and amidst the rice fields. Be one of the first to endure our awful roads that end with breathtaking world-class sunsets. Don't take our word for it, just look at the pictures.

Nias offers a great variety of spare-time activities. From spear-fishing to jungle walks, chasing waterfalls and boating trips to surrounding tropical islands with world class waves and snorkeling, we offer adventure and relaxation. Spend your time bathing in the ocean or surfing it, or learn more about Nias' unique culture: visit one of the many ancient megalithic sites, hike up to one of the traditional villages in the jungle where you can admire or even spend a night in beautiful traditional wooden buildings, watch young warriors perform the stone-jumping ceremony, and hear stories about tribal wars and headhunting.

We interact a lot with the local Nias people, and they are incredibly friendly and welcoming. Prepare to have lots of pictures taken and be surrounded by groups of little children who have never seen a Westerner before! The locals really appreciate you being here and will happily invite you into their home: you can make lots of Indonesian friends playing chess, visiting one of the local karaoke bars or going to the local gym!

One of the most unique things about Nias is that there is virtually no tourism: staying here you will have a truly authentic experience of Indonesian culture, integrate into the local community, and become part of a committed group of people who truly care about this beautiful island.

We have now engaged with a certified permaculture practitioner. We have 28 acres of land 10 minutes from the hostel that we plan to develop into vegetable permaculture, but at the moment we are focusing on a second, smaller site for Vegetables and biodynamic farming. These are the first of their kind in North Sumatra. We are in the early stages of this program so lots of designing, seeding, clearing, composting, construction of grow beds and shelters, harvesting materials for layering of beds and planting. Lots to do here and a great opportunity for any volunteer wanting to learn the critical parts of developing a successful permaculture garden. We have already established a number of successful grow beds so plenty 100% organic vegetable are on the way. This is a self-funded Community Program and we hope to engage with local farmers, to teach them about permaculture and help them grow their own food in a sustainable way to improve their standard of living.
In addition to the permaculture program we are still building up the hostel, which opened this year. We have many different building projects going on: for example we just finished building the first pizza oven on the island, and are now working on building a deck next to the sea where we can watch the sunset. There's always room for new exciting ideas! In addition there are some general cleaning duties, some gardening, a cute puppy and kitten to take care of, tending to the on-site vegetables and seedlings nursery, and decorating walls and signs. We also need to continuously improve our online presence so that skill set will not go unnoticed. We always try to let people choose the work or projects they enjoy most, while also giving them the opportunity to learn some new skills.

You will sleep in one of our dorms and share a bathroom and kitchen with the others volunteers .

We offer a self-serve simple breakfast and free coffee and tea throughout the day plus clean drinking water. We usually chip in and have lunch all together (vegetarian), sharing the cooking and the cleaning duties, and everyone agrees that this is an extremely cheap and healthy way to eat. Dinner is up to you: we have a full open kitchen for your use with gas cookers, refrigeration and freezer, some basic cooking condiments and spices, and all utensils to prepare your locally priced and sourced fresh produce. However, local food is very cheap and delicious so people also eat out quite a lot, together or individually, or get take away.

We have cold and clean rain water with western toilets, showers and A/C. We have a small canteen with cheap local food and you can purchase alcohol, cigarettes, snacks and fruit shakes/cocktails here. Recently we have started weekly pizza nights, and soon we will add burger nights! The nearby town of Teluk dalam also has many markets and stores where you can buy fresh fruit, delicious local food, and even donuts and ice cream.

Visa extensions: If you want to stay longer than one month you will be able to extend your visa on the island in Gunung sitoli, which is a 2.5 hour drive from here (you only need to go once so you could make it a daytrip and for example visit the Nias Museum). In order to extend you need to get the Visa-on-arrival when you enter Indonesia, instead of the Visa-free entry. With the Visa-on-arrival you can extend one month, if you apply in advance for the 60 day Visit visa you can stay two months and then extend every month up to six months.
