    Description

We have an organic fruit and vegetable garden at our home in County Sligo. Our Family includes me (Andrew), my wife Siobhan and 3 'children' but only our 17 year old son is left at home now. Our two girls are in college in Dublin but come back from time to time and are good fun. The garden here is a large kitchen garden growing a broad range of crops to supply the house and to feed hungry Workawayers and other guests.

We love the outdoors and like hill walking, sailing, camping, collecting seaweed for the vegetable garden and jumping in the sea when we can. We are also very interested in music, Siobhan is an excellent singer, Thomas plays drums, piano and guitar and is obsessed with synthesisers. I am just starting to learn the bass. Our daughters also sing and are here every now and then. If you like to mess with musical instruments, we have plenty.

We are very proud of the beautiful countryside in county Sligo and love to get out an about as much as we can. We look forward to showing our guests around as not only do we re-visit our favourite places, we discover new parts when a fresh pair of eyes wants to go searching in another direction.

You will benefit from learning about organic food growing in the garden as well as becoming part of our journey to turn our little 3 acres of land into a sustainable oasis. We love to have new people around and to learn about their experiences, it makes our lives so much richer and keeps us connected to the rest of the world. We are very proud of our culture in landscape, music and storytelling and are keen that guests leave after an enjoyable stay where they feel they got a real flavour of the countryside and our way of life. The west of Ireland is still wild, free and relatively unspoiled, for people to protect it, they need to love it so that is our goal.

Sligo is also one of the surf capitols of the World with some of the best breaks you will find anywhere. It is a bit colder than many of the famous surf spots but there are far fewer people and no sharks! I am rubbish on a surfboard but I do have a mini mal long-board you can borrow if you want to get in the water. We are also happy to give lifts to popular surf spots where you can hire boards or take lessons.

Help here will include help with chopping logs, cutting grass, weeding, planting, harvesting and generally looking after our ornamental and vegetable gardens. If you are into cooking it would be great if you could help out sometimes, we have loads of fresh organic produce from the garden to play with. We also need to store some of the garden produce by pickling and making chutneys etc... which you might find fun.

We are flexible with help hours, the requirement is 5 hrs per working day Monday to Friday with the weekend free (25 hrs per week total). Provided you do 25 hrs, we don't mind if you want to work longer days so you have more full days off to have your own adventures. I may not be in the garden all the time as I also work locally part time but I will be with you for 3 days a week. If I am not here, my wife Siobhan will be about. I pop back and forth a lot so will always be quickly available if needed.

Please be aware that Sligo can be cold and wet at any time of the year so, on some days, garden work can be challenging. We often work in less than ideal conditions (otherwise we'd get nothing done), so please be prepared for that. There will always be a hot shower or sauna waiting but sometimes it can be tough.

    BEE ALLERGIES PLEASE READ
We keep bees for honey which are located away from the garden. The bees do collect nectar and pollen in the garden so you will come across them but, when foraging, they do not sting (we have never had an incidence of a bee sting in the garden).

The hives are placed 100m away which is the only place where we advise caution as bees are territorial and can sting if the hive is approached. Having said that, we have had less than 10 stings in the full 12 years of having bees on the property, all of which were beside the hive. However, we still believe that for people with strong bee allergies, this is not a suitable placement.

We also have a small business off the site but would like to confirm that Workawayers will not be asked to help in our external business.

    Hébergement

The accommodation is a separate building situated in the heart of the vegetable garden which is 60m from our house. The cabin has 1 bedroom with 2 single beds but we can swap for a double bed for couples if preferred. There is a kitchen/living room with wood stove and electric cooking facilities and a bathroom with a shower. The cabin is heated by the stove but also has electric radiators, it is warm and well insulated and has been recently refurbished to a high standard. There is a covered verandah on the front for relaxing in the pretty surroundings of the vegetable garden. We also have a wood fired sauna and cold water plunge pool to ease your aching muscles after a busy day!

For artists, we have a studio which you are free to use if you like to be creative in your spare time. The studio is large with plenty of light and and work tables. We don't supply art materials but there is a good art shop nearby if guests wish to make some work during their stay.

We will provide a meal for you on arrival and lunch during your stay but many of the evening meals will be self catering. We will have meals together in the house some days but others, you will be eating on your own in your accommodation. We will provide supplies to cook as well as fresh organic food from the garden. There will be bicycles to cycle to the local town or further afield. We are only 1.5km from the town of Ballymote which has a railway station on the main line between Dublin and Sligo so a handy location for exploring in either direction.

If you are interested in outdoor activities there is plenty to do including hill walking, kayaking, swimming etc... There are plenty of beautiful beaches with stunning views if you just want to relax and stroll around. Sligo town is a busy spot with plenty of pubs, music, theatre and things to do, it is easily accessible by train or bus from our local town. We may be sailing on lakes or in Sligo bay, you are welcome to join us if you wish.

THE WEATHER - Please remember you are visiting the North West of Ireland where it rains quite a lot. A good rain jacket will be your best friend as will a good pair of waterproof hiking boots or shoes which will make hill walking and trekking much more comfortable and fun. Sometimes the weather is beautiful, sometimes it is not, be prepared!
